Promising drug candidate protects against radiation exposure from nuclear fallout

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015

The 2011 Fukushima disaster was a stark reminder of the continuing dangers posed by nuclear fallout, highlighting the need for an approved drug that can be taken after radiation exposure to protect against organ injury and death. A study published by Cell Press on January 22nd in Chemistry & Biology identifies a drug candidate called DBIBB that increases the survival of mice suffering from radiation syndrome, even when treatment started three days after radiation exposure. The findings suggest that DBIBB shows promise for becoming the first drug capable of treating acute radiation syndrome caused by the high levels of radiation released by nuclear explosions. "The 21st Century has presented humankind with unforeseen challenges, including the possibility of radiation terrorism," said senior study author Gbor Tigyi, a professor of physiology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). "We hope that the scientific community and our efforts will provide protection through medical countermeasures against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation and also help humans to benefit from the useful effects of nuclear technology." Nuclear explosions can expose humans to high levels of ionizing radiation, which can cause cell death and organ injury due to DNA damage. Although some agents tested … Continue reading

Wilson Medal from the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB). The medal, the organization's highest honor for far-reaching contributions to cell biology over a lifetime in science, was presented to Brinkley at the 54th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Recognized as America's first cell biologist, Edmund Beecher Wilson was a pioneering zoologist and geneticist who authored "The Cell," one of the most famous textbooks in modern biology. Each year, an ASCB nominating committee reviews submissions and decides on award recipients named in his honor. The first adjunct professor hired by UTSA with a membership in the National Academy of Sciences, Brinkley advocated for research funding and strengthened relationships with the national scientific community. He has served as an advisory committee member and external evaluator for the UTSA Research Centers in Minority Institutions. The program is supported by … Continue reading

Scripps Scientists to be Honored with Prestigious International Biology Award

Posted: Published on January 21st, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Linda and Nick Holland, marine biologists based at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego since 1987 and 1966, respectively, have been selected to receive one of the worlds most prestigious awards in the field of evolutionary biology. In March the husband-and-wife scientists will be awarded the Alexander Kowalevsky Medal by the 147-year-old Saint Petersburg Society of Naturalists (SPSN) in Russia. The Kowalevsky Medal was first established in the 1910s, but due to many circumstances, including World War I and the Russian Revolution, the award was not given and sat dormant for nearly a century. SPSN resurrected the medal in 2001 and now bestows the award annually for distinguished achievements in evolutionary developmental biology and comparative zoology. In addition to receiving the Kowalevsky Medal, Linda and Nick will be elected honorary SPSN members, receive an SPSN diploma, and present lectures during their March 13-17 trip to St. Petersburg. The Hollands are being recognized for advancing and modernizing the science of amphioxus, a small, worm-like marine animal also known as a lancelet. Amphioxus appears fish-like, with a small tail fin and medial fins, and spends most of its time burrowed in sand … Continue reading
