At Maryville College, a unique course is teaching students about the world around them by creating photographic memories. "It's not just a science class. And it's not just an art class. It's an art-meets-science class," said Dr. Drew Crain, professor of biology and wildlife photography at Maryville College. For around a decade, Crain has offered a course that develops a greater understanding of biology by providing students exposure through the lenses of high quality cameras to capture wildlife photography. Many of them, the closest they've come to taking a great photo is taking their iPhone out at a concert," said Crain. "With technology today, anyone can take a good photograph. My challenge to these students is to take great photographs." Crain and around half a dozen students arrived at Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains … Continue reading

New hope for fighting major fungal disease in durum wheat

Posted: Published on January 19th, 2015

Insights into the cell walls of disease-resistant wheat varieties could help to produce stronger durum wheat for improved pasta production A variety of wheat that is resistant to a destructive fungal disease has been found to have specialized and protective cell walls, according to research published in BMC Plant Biology. These insights could help to produce stronger, disease-resistant varieties of durum wheat for improved pasta production. Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) is a fungal disease that affects worldwide wheat production due to dramatic yield loss, and reduced grain quality from toxins that make harvests unsuitable for consumption. While there have been several studies looking at FHB disease resistance in common wheat, little is known about durum wheat - one of the cereals most susceptible to infection and the key ingredient in pasta and couscous. Italy is one of the world's major producers of durum wheat, and FHB has been permanently present there since 1995. Lead author Daniela Bellincampi from Sapienza Universit di Roma, Italy, said: "Breeding disease-resistant varieties of durum wheat is probably the best economic and ecological strategy for fighting this invasive and destructive disease. Unfortunately, this is particularly challenging due to a lack of highly disease-resistant varieties that are … Continue reading

NL students experience real-world biology applications in field trip

The student council at St. Charles High School has created a theme of Be the Good this year that is helping to spread goodwill throughout the district. Signs like the one shown here now adorn the halls throughout the school. (Courtesy Photo) NEW LOTHROP Last month, students from New Lothrop High School went on a field trip to the University of Michigan Flint where they learned about the human anatomy. Students from Mrs. Daileys human anatomy class traveled to the campus where Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter, from the universitys Biology department, hosted them. Students were given a tour of the cadaver lab, including actual examination time with the deceased specimens. Following the cadaver laboratory experience, the upper-level students then attended Cell-ebration coordinated by Dr. Jill Slater of the Biology department. The interactive exhibit showcased biology students research projects as well as scholarly presentations of actual research conducted by students on campus. The trip to U of M Flint also included a comprehensive tour of the campus and recreational center, including the housing options and extracurricular organizations available. The New Lothrop students said they found the experience valuable because it helped to promote their understanding of the dynamic educational opportunities and programs … Continue reading
