Penn State Schuylkill to offer biology degree

Posted: Published on December 26th, 2014

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN Penn State Schuylkill will offer a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, general biology option starting this summer. The campus announced last week that it had been approved to offer the program to current students, as well as those being accepted in the summer and fall 2015. The program tailors to careers requiring broad backgrounds and diverse skills in the biological sciences and graduate studies in many fields of biology. Students can select courses from a variety of areas of contemporary biology. Career opportunities for graduates of the program include environmental consultants, water quality specialists, teachers and professors, pharmaceutical administrators and chemical technicians. Students can also acquire advanced degrees through graduate study and prepare for careers in medicine or other health-related professions. The ability to offer a bachelors degree in biology is one of the most exciting things that has happened in the science division during my twenty-five years as a member of the faculty at Penn State Schuylkill, Rod. M. Heisey, biology professor and program coordinator, said in a press release. Having students at the junior and senior level participating in our classes, and with our research projects will be a great asset both for the campus … Continue reading

Study sheds light on what causes cells to divide

Posted: Published on December 24th, 2014

When a rapidly-growing cell divides into two smaller cells, what triggers the split? Is it the size the growing cell eventually reaches? Or is the real trigger the time period over which the cell keeps growing ever larger? A novel study published online today in the journal Current Biology has finally provided an answer to this long unsolved conundrum. And it's not what many biologists expected. "How cells control their size and maintain stable size distributions is one of the most fundamental, unsolved problems in biology," said Suckjoon Jun, an assistant professor of physics and molecular biology at UC San Diego, who headed the research study with Massimo Vergassola, a professor of physics. "Even for the bacterium E. coli, arguably the most extensively studied organism to date, no one has been able to answer this question." Finding a solution was more than a basic-science pursuit for the scientists, who pointed out that learning more about the triggers of cell division would enable researchers to better understand such processes as the runaway cell division that leads to cancer. To conduct the study, Jun and his colleagues developed a tiny device to isolate and physically manipulate individual genetic materials. "It turned out … Continue reading

University of Scranton honors Clarks Summit biology faculty member

Posted: Published on December 24th, 2014

Clarks Summit resident Terrence Sweeney, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Biology Department at The University of Scranton, was awarded the John L. Earl III Award for service to the university, the faculty, and the wider community. This award is presented annually to a member of the universitys community who demonstrates the spirit of generosity and dedication that the late Dr. John Earl, a distinguished professor of history, exemplified during his years at Scranton from 1964 to 1996. Sweeney joined the faculty in 1992. His research and teaching interests include cardiovascular and microvascular physiology and anatomy. Sweeney, with assistance from University of Scranton students, developed a computer-driven, mechanical model that simulates the functions of the human cardiovascular system that can be used for teaching. The model can be used to demonstrate the operation and roles played by the key elements of the cardiovascular system, coupled with quantitative, multi-parameter data collection and analytical capabilities. In recognition of his invention, Sweeney was selected as the 2012 recipient of the ADInstruments Macknight Progressive Educator Award, granted by the American Physiological Society (APS) Education Committee. In addition, he was awarded third place in the regional Businesss Plan Competition run by TecBridge for a business … Continue reading

Activating hair growth with a little help from the skin

Posted: Published on December 24th, 2014

Restoring hair loss is a task undertaken not only by beauty practitioners. Previous studies have identified signals from the skin that help prompt new phases of hair growth. However, how different types of cells that reside in the skin communicate to activate hair growth has continued to puzzle biologists. An exciting study publishing on December 23 in the open access journal PLOS Biology reveals a new way to spur hair growth. A group from the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) has discovered an unexpected connection?a link between the body?s defense system and skin regeneration. It turns out that macrophages are involved. These are cells from the immune system that are in charge of devouring invading pathogens, a process called phagocytosis. The authors report that macrophages induce hair growth by surrounding and activating cells in the skin that have regenerative capacity, called stem cells. The discovery that macrophages activate skin stem cells could influence technologies with potential applications in tissue regeneration, aging, and cancer. The authors of the study are Mirna Perez-Moreno and Donatello Castellana, from the Epithelial Cell Biology Group of the BBVA Foundation-CNIO Cancer Cell Biology Programme, along with Ralf Paus, a hair immunobiology expert from the University … Continue reading
