New book on ‘The Biology of Heart Disease’ from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 3-Dec-2014 Contact: Robert Redmond rredmond@cshl.edu 516-422-4101 Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory @CSHLnews The heart is the first organ to form in a developing embryo, and all subsequent life processes depend on its proper function. But a range of genetic and environmental factors can lead to its failure. Inherited mutations give rise to congenital heart disease, the most common birth defect, and abnormalities of the adult heart are a leading cause of illness and death in industrialized countries. Written and edited by experts in the field, The Biology of Heart Disease, published by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, describes how recent advances in genetics, stem cell biology, and developmental biology are transforming the way we understand and treat heart disease. Contributors review the various cell lineages and molecular networks involved in heart development; the genetic basis of inherited cardiac conditions such as congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and aortic aneurysm; and how various cutting-edge technologies and models are being employed to study heart biology, uncover disease-related processes, and identify therapeutic targets. Topics include tissue engineering, genome editing, stem cells, cardiomyocyte reprogramming, chemically modified RNA, and next-generation DNA sequencing. The authors also consider the process of drug discovery and development, and … Continue reading

Biology teacher admits having sex with 14-year-old student

Posted: Published on December 2nd, 2014

A religious school biology teacher admitted Monday that he enticed one of his 14-year-old students into having sex with him several times, exchanged naked photos with the girl and sent her a video of him masturbating. Eric Beasley, 25, of Plantation, expects to serve 20 years in federal prison under a plea agreement with federal and state prosecutors, his lawyers said. He was arrested April 1 after Lighthouse Point police caught him having sex with the girl in his car, parked behind a strip mall with its windows partly blocked by a shirt and sun visors. The two told police they were consenting adults who met online, but soon admitted she was a ninth-grader at Zion Lutheran Christian School in Deerfield Beach and he was her teacher. Beasley, who had been teaching at the school for two years, admitted he had been having sex with the girl since around Valentine's Day. He said they also engaged in "inappropriate behavior at school during school hours" three times. FBI agents and Broward Sheriff's deputies, who joined the investigation, said they found evidence on the pair's cell phones that they had exchanged naked photographs and that Beasley texted the girl photographs of his … Continue reading

For docs, more biology info means less empathy for mental health patients

Posted: Published on December 2nd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 1-Dec-2014 Contact: Bill Hathaway william.hathaway@yale.edu 203-432-1322 Yale University @yale Give therapists and psychiatrists information about the biology of a mental disorder, and they have less -- not more -- empathy for the patient, a new Yale study shows. The findings released Dec. 1 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, challenge the notion that biological explanations for mental illness boost compassion for the tens of millions of Americans who suffer from mental-health problems. Conventional wisdom suggests that biological explanations for psychiatric symptoms should reduce the blame patients receive for their behavior by making genes and brain cells the culprits. This, in turn, should increase feelings of compassion. In a series of studies, U.S. clinicians read descriptions of patients whose symptoms were explained using information that focused on either genetics and neurobiology or on childhood experiences and stressful life circumstances. Among other questions, the clinicians were asked how much compassion they felt for the individual, an essential element of therapy. The clinicians consistently expressed less empathy and compassion for the patient when his or her symptoms were explained using biological factors, the researchers found. "Biological explanations are like a double-edged sword," said Matthew Lebowitz, a Yale … Continue reading
