Is violent crime in some people’s genes?

Posted: Published on October 30th, 2014

By Alan Mozes HealthDay Reporter (HealthDay News) -- In a cutting-edge look at the biology of crime, a team of Swedish investigators has identified two specific genetic mutations that appear to be linked to a higher risk for extremely violent behavior. "Our study suggests that up to 10 percent of violent crimes might be explained by the aforementioned two genes," said study lead author Dr. Jari Tiihonen, a professor in the department of clinical neuroscience with the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. One of the mutations involves a version of gene called MAOA. This genetic mutation appears to short circuit the usual way the hormone dopamine is processed and controlled. Prior research has suggested that an excess of dopamine can promote aggressive behavior, particularly when mixed with drugs or alcohol, according to background information in the study. The other mutation involves a gene known as CDH13. This mutation seems to impede the development of normal neural connections and undermine impulse control. It has previously been linked to the onset of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), according to the study. "[But] I think that it is important to realize that there are probably many more genes that [also] contribute to … Continue reading

Biology professor earns NSF grant to enhance course-based research

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2014

October 28, 2014 St. Olaf College Professor of Biology Eric Cole will use a new grant from the National Science Foundation to enhance course-based research. St. Olaf College Professor of Biology Eric Cole has consistently worked to provide his students with rich, hands-on laboratory experiences, ideally leading to publication. Now, with the support of a new grant from the National Science Foundation, he is working to help faculty members across the country do the same. Cole, along with members of the Ciliate Genomics Consortium, will develop and deliver advanced workshops to train cell biology teachers in the use of a model organism Tetrahymena thermophila within the classroom. In addition to that, they are pioneering a new type of online publication that will enable undergraduates to post their novel gene-discovery data on the Tetrahymena Genomic Database. This allows undergraduates to publish data immediately in a novel form that can be accessed by the ciliate research community, Cole says. The goal of this work is to engage more undergraduates in research experiences through course-based projects. It will also create more opportunities for teaching-research integration and student publication. The Ciliate Genomics Consortium is a student-centered, nationwide collaborative learning community that integrates genomics research … Continue reading

Biology center expansion broadens science opportunities

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2014

UW-Madisons Institute for Biology Education is expanding to create broader opportunities for students who wish to pursue studies in science fields. The Wisconsin Institute for Science Education and Community Engagement (WISCIENCE) will have programs to mentor teachers in methods to help spark student interest across all ages in science fields both in and out of the classroom, according to a university release. This expansion is a reflection of Chancellor Rebecca Blanks support of the White Houses initiative to give low-income students the opportunity of a college education, specifically in the area of science, according to the release. Weve partnered beyond biology on higher education initiatives with faculty and staff and promoted cross-campus collaboration on science outreach for a long time, and the majority of our student programs focus on addressing the needs of underrepresented groups, WISCIENCE Director Janet Branchaw said in the statement. Baker professor urges listeners to take chance to be heroes

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2014

Biology professor Darcy Russell told a Baker University gathering that role models are like sewing patterns, which first provide guidance and then a jumping-off point for creativity. Russell addressed a crowd Tuesday evening in the universitys Rice Auditorium in Baldwin City as a speaker in the Kopke Lecture Series. The speech was among the events surrounding the inauguration of Lynne Murray as Bakers 29th president, which will occur at 11 a.m. Thursday on the Baldwin City campus. Russell is a Baker graduate and has been a biology professor at the school since 1998. Her address was billed as a "last lecture," a recent tradition at Baker that has included among its speakers former President Pat Long and recently retired campus minister Ira DeSpain. Russell, those attending were informed, has no intention of retiring anytime soon. The head of the Baker biology departments lecture on heroes and role models was intended to touch on themes she would share in her final class lecture. Not surprisingly, her earliest role models were her parents, Russell said. Her mother was an excellent seamstress, who fascinated her as a child by making clothing from patterns. Her mothers creativity would not be limited to the patterns, … Continue reading
