Genomic data could help doctors know whether to prescribe statins

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 29-Sep-2014 Contact: Anna Perman Anna.Perman@biomedcentral.com 44-020-319-22429 BioMed Central @biomedcentral Genomic data could predict whether statins will benefit a patient or not, according to an article in the open access journal Genome Biology. The research suggests that genomic data alone can explain around 15% of patients' responses to a cholesterol-lowering statin, and further studies could increase the accuracy of these predictions. The study looked at data from 372 participants in an American clinical trial for the statin, Simvastatin, and found that certain genetic signatures were more common in patients whose cholesterol was effectively lowered by the treatment, while others were associated with patients who hadn't responded so well. It was possible to predict how 15% of the patients would respond to statins, and this data could help clinicians to make a decision about whether to prescribe statins for individual patients. Statins are used to try to lower patients' levels of cholesterol, a type of fat which is carried in the blood and can block arteries. While they reduce rates of heart disease in many patients, clinicians have debated whether they should be prescribed widely, because they have significant side-effects which some argue outweigh the benefits. Being able to … Continue reading

Biology award for Cambridge scientist

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2014

University of Cambridge neuroscience PhD student, Kate McAllister has won The New Researcher Prize from The Society of Biology. McAllister, along with Dr Nicola Hemmings from the University of Sheffield were named as the winners of the Society of Biology's Science Communication Awards 2014 which reward outreach work carried out by scientists to inform, enthuse and engage the public. The competition was open to bioscience researchers from UK universities and institutes in two categories; New Researcher Prize (750) and Established Researcher Prize (1500). McAllister designed, coordinated and taught a weekend neurology course for a lay audience aged 21-90. She has visited schools to debate brain-enhancing drugs and has consulted with BFI on communicating neuroscience through cinema. She appears regularly on the 'Naked Scientists' podcast and has collaborated with them in creating the Smarter UK schools project. Dr Steve Cross, head of public engagement at UCL and chair of the judging panel said: "It has been a real pleasure to read the nominations for the Society of Biology's Science Communication Awards this year. So many biologists are doing great work to get their research and knowledge out there, all over the world." McAllister said: "The science communication projects I have been … Continue reading

UVa researchers see promise in ‘synthetic biology’

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2014

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - The phrase synthetic biology may sound like science fiction, but a small group of biology students at the University of Virginia say this field will play an important role in our lives over the next few years. Scientists in the field are finding ways to produce cheap anti-malarial drugs, use bacteria to clean up chemical waste and reduce resistance to antibiotic drugs. In the future, people could be eating vanilla and cheese produced from yeast or using laundry detergent and makeup derived from algae. Its something were going to see a lot more of, said Tom Moss, a second-year biology major. (And) theres a lot of misconceptions about it. Moss is in a small group of students and faculty members who organized a recent public meeting on synthetic biology at UVas OpenGrounds building. Their goal is to help the public understand the importance of this field. Synthetic biology is related to - but not synonymous with - genetic modification. While genetic modification may involve replacing or changing individual genes within an organism, synthetic biology involves far more extensive changes such as completely re-engineering the genomes of microorganisms to create designer proteins or engineer viruses to attack … Continue reading

Students’ love of Biology grows atop science building

DECATUR Biology major Jessica Kerr is gaining ground on an environmental enigma unique to the Midwest. The Millikin University junior is doing it by growing a garden project atop the Leighty-Tabor Science Center, thereby restoring part of the land taken out of production by the building, standing as it does on some of the richest soil on the planet. But because the Midwest is also home to some of the world's greatest weather extremes, often only amplified by elevation, her challenge is to discover which plants will survive and the minimum amount of soil (a special, lightweight medium) needed to produce acceptable results. Sedums are supposed to be the ones that take to roof life the best, so it's kind of a bummer ours didn't come out like we expected, Kerr said. As you can see, the Vera Jameson is dead, and the Angelina's nowhere to be seen. We're not so sure the pigeons didn't have something to do with that, biology Professor Judy Parrish quickly added. That disappointment aside, Kerr's research project is already producing data in the form of a paper she just completed as Leighty Scholar and will continue to do so as her James Millikin Scholar … Continue reading
