Biology – Basics, Characteristics of Life and Principles

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

Biology What is biology? Simply put, it is the study of life -- life in all of its grandeur. From the very small algae to the very large elephant, life has a certain wonder about it. With that in mind, how do we know if something is living? Is a virus alive or dead? What are the characteristics of life? These are all very important questions with equally important answers. Characteristics of Life Living things include both the visible world of animals and plants , as well as the invisible world of bacteria and viruses . On a basic level, we can say that life is ordered . Organisms have an enormously complex organization. We're all familiar with the intricate systems of the basic unit of life, the cell . Life can also "work." No, not the daily employment variety, but living creatures can take in energy from the environment. This energy, in the form of food, is transformed to maintain metabolic processes and for survival. Life grows and develops . This means more than just getting larger in size. Living organisms also have the ability to rebuild and repair themselves when injured. Life can reproduce . Have you ever … Continue reading

Understanding Genetics and Molecular Biology to Avert Dreadful Medical Challenges during Open Access Week

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

Foster City, CA (PRWEB) September 26, 2014 Molecular Biology deals with the basic molecular mechanisms occurring in the cell for the regulation of cellular activity and its behaviour. It emphasise on physical, chemical and biochemical interactions between genes and with its environment within the genome. Knowledge on molecular biology helps us in innovation of new and novel therapeutic methodologies for the diagnosis, prognosis and the treatment of the various lethal syndromes. On this occasion, Dr. Srinubabu Gedela, MD of OMICS Publishing Group acknowledging the recent developments in the field of genomics, cellular & molecular biology and gene technology has enhanced our understanding of gene structure and function, thus taking us towards advanced therapeutic approach at the molecular level. OMICS Group International has been in Open Access publishing with more than 400 front-line peer-reviewed, Open Access Journals. A strong network of 30,000 scientists, researchers and authors form the editorial board of OMICS Group Journals that cater to the requirements of 3 million readers worldwide. OMICS Group also organizes over 300 International Conferences annually all over the world with the support of nearly 1000 International Societies related to the fields of Molecular biology, Neurology, Medical, Clinical, Pharmaceutical, Chemical, OMICS, Engineering, Technology, Management, … Continue reading

Biology building still in flux

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

Deliberations for the construction of the Yale Biology Building are in the works still. The YBB, intended to replace the aging Kline Biology Tower, has been under discussion by faculty and administrators for more than a decade. While previous proposals saw the structure as the center for biology departments alone, the latest, in the works since the spring, envisions an interdisciplinary facility that will serve primarily as the Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology departments home base, but provide lab space for physics, chemistry and engineering as well, said MCDB professor Scott Holley. Its a biology building, but theres a lot of breadth to it, said Jim Slattery, associate provost for science and technology. Weve been thinking about what science is going to be 20, 30, 40 years from now. This is a chance for great dialogue about what the opportunities [for YBB] could be. Those anticipating broken ground in the YBBs original site at the Lot 22 parking lot on Whitney Avenue should now shift their gazes skyward. The Gibbs building, which is set to be demolished, will be replaced with a building that houses the YBB on its top floors. The new facility will likely feature lecture halls that rival … Continue reading
