Cancer Cells Adapt Energy Needs to Spread Illness to Other Organs

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Want to understand why cancer cells metastasize? Think of Sparta. Ancient Greek warriors were fed a special diet that better prepared them for the demands of battle on distant fields. Cancer cells that metastasize may do the same thing according to a new study revealing previously unknown differences between cancer cells that continue to grow at the original tumor site, and those that travel to other organs. Given that a cancer cells unyielding ability to metastasize is the primary cause of cancer-related death, understanding how they successfully migrate can be lifesaving. Scientists at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have found that cancer cells traveling to other sites have different energy needs from their stay-at-home siblings which continue to proliferate at the original tumor site. The study results are in the Sept. 21 online edition of Nature Cell Biology. The reason may lie with the protein, PGC-1, a type of transcription co-activator crucial to regulation of cellular metabolism. PGC-1 appears to play a role in how cancer cells are able to acquire unique energy sources that allow them to travel and spread cancer in the body. New therapy strategies are … Continue reading

Clones school teacher loses High Court challenge over transfer

Posted: Published on September 20th, 2014

Mary McEneaney said the board had failed to implement appropriate procedures under a 2009 Department of Education circular dealing with competency issues. The High Court has dismissed a teachers challenge to decisions to initially transfer her to another school and later place her on administrative leave. Mary McEneaney claimed that once the Cavan and Monaghan Education Training Board learned in 2009 that she suffered from depression, she had been discriminated against by the board on grounds of her illness. The court heard that Ms McEneaney had been the subject of a number of complaints by pupils and their parents about her teaching at Largy College in Clones, Co Monaghan. Ms McEneaney, a biology and home economics teacher, sought to quash the transfer decision of August 2013 and a later decision to place her on administrative leave. She said the board had failed to implement appropriate procedures under a 2009 Department of Education circular dealing with competency issues. The High Court president, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns, dismissed her application, saying Ms McEneaney suffered significant health issues. The only way she could return to teaching at Largy College would be after several complaints against her had been appropriately resolved. She alleged that … Continue reading

Biology crowding is alleviated by lottery, additional offerings

Biology crowding is alleviated by lottery, additional offerings Lander and Weinbergs 7.012 enrolls hundreds fewer than two years ago September 19, 2014 Two years after their introduction, the revised introductory biology classes and lottery system associated with the classes were marked as a success by MITs biology department administrators. The 7.015 and 7.016 Introductory Biology classes were introduced in the fall of 2013 to alleviate the burden on 7.012, the first variant of introductory biology, taught by Professors Eric Lander and Robert Weinberg PhD 64. Previously, 7.012 suffered from over-enrollment and crowded lecture halls. Over 800 students enrolled in the class in the fall of 2012. The introduction of 7.015 and 7.016 redistributed the biology general institute requirement (GIR) student population. Whats more, the 7.012 class saw a general increase in the students enrolled. 451 students enrolled in 7.012 in the fall of 2013 and approximately 500 enrolled this semester, according to biology department undergraduate academic officer and associate professor, Dennis H. Kim. Students who registered for 7.012 and 7.016 were again subject to a lottery that decided their final biology placement. According to Professor Kim, students sign up for their desired class and those students who enrolled after the … Continue reading
