Cartoon used in high school biology class equates evolution with Satan
Posted: Published on July 9th, 2014
ATLANTA, July 8 (UPI) --Henry W. Grady High School is facing backlash after a biology teacher showed a cartoon equating evolution with Satan during a PowerPoint presentation. The controversial cartoon depicts dueling castles labeled "Evolution (Satan)" and "Creation (Christ)." On top of the evolution castle, there is a flag reading "humanism" and balloons marked with the words euthanasia, divorce, homosexuality, pornography, abortion and racism. "Evolution is part of high school biology curriculum," the 50-slide PowerPoint read. "You are entitled to challenge everything and encouraged to believe whatever you would like." Anquinette Jones, a freshman biology teacher, said the PowerPoint she assigned through the Blackboard system was designed by Atlanta Public Schools (APS) and was part of a file sharing database for teachers. Both the APS project manager and science coordinator have not commented on the matter. Freshman Griffin Ricker said Jones was angered by the fact that students notified the administration. "She had a 10-minute rant," Ricker said. "She yelled and said, 'This is on the APS website, and it was certified.'" Other students switched out of the class specifically because Jones refused to teach evolution. Fellow science teacher Nikolai Curtis said the APS hasn't set a specific policy on … Continue reading

Biology department gains new professor
Posted: Published on July 9th, 2014
Beginning in August, the Fort Hays State University Department of Biological Sciences will have a new professor, who will advise Rangeland Management and teach various biology courses. The department has hired Mitchell Greer from Oklahoma State University where he recently completed his Ph.D. in Range Ecology. We did a national search that included the Chronicle of Education and other national outlets as required by FHSU, as well as the Society of Range Management, which is an international organization or range ecologists/range managers, said Elmer Finck, professor of biological sciences. I received an email from my Ph.D. advisor about the position. She received the announcement as she used to work at FHSU, Greer said. Each candidate had to meet specific requirements to be considered for the position. The person is required to teach Range Management and its lab, Plant Taxonomy and its lab, and other courses in range management and expertise allows. The position also need to teach General Education or lower division biology course as negotiated with the Chair, Finck said. I had to submit an application package containing my CV, transcripts, teaching statement, research statement, and letter of interest. I was then asked to attend a two day interview … Continue reading

Biology professors choose simple life in Effingham
Posted: Published on July 6th, 2014
EFFINGHAM, S.C. (AP) On display at Francis Marion University's Hyman Fine Arts Center this summer are dozens of handmade arrowheads, skins, bowls and firemaking tools. Encased in glass and sitting on bare white surfaces, the primitive pieces look wholly out of place. They do, however, hint to the lifestyle of their creator, Greg Pryor. He lives on a 100-acre parcel of land in Effingham with his wife, Tamatha Barbeau. Both are biology professors at Francis Marion. "I teach biology, I have the homestead, and I do artwork," Pryor said in between sips of wine made on the property. "All of it is connected to nature." The couple bought their land from a timber company, and most of it remains forested. Corn covers 20 to 30 acres. Their house, gardens, grape vines, fruit trees and outbuildings sit on a small remainder of cleared land. "You cannot see streetlights or neighbors' houses from where we are sitting," said Pryor, wearing a long beard and overalls. The couple is committed to growing much of their own food. Jessie, one of their six goats, is milked twice a day. In the summer, their garden yields a variety of vegetables and herbs. Bee colonies using … Continue reading
