The Biology of Risk and Other Fascinating News on the Web
Posted: Published on June 16th, 2014
TIME Newsfeed NextDraft June 9, 2014 Risk by its very nature threatens to hurt you, so when confronted by it your body and brain, under the influence of the stress response, unite as a single functioning unit. This occurs in athletes and soldiers, and it occurs as well in traders and people investing from home. In the NYT John Coates takes an interesting look at the biology of risk. Coates focuses on traders and finance for his examples, but the mind-body connections he describes apply to anyone. Next time someone tells you its all in your mind, remind them thats impossible. + When a crisis hits, some of us are able to power through it, while others drown in a pool of learned helplessness, overcome by the belief that No matter what I do, it wont change anything. (Others just open 75 browser tabs and quietly mumble to themselves). From WaPo: Why are some depressed, others resilient? + Tai-curious: And somewhat related, Simon Doonan wonders if Tai Chi is the New Yoga. One way or another, Bitcoin is going to be huge. It could be the as big as the Internet, it could transform into something else, or it could … Continue reading

Endangered Species Baby Boom at National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute
Posted: Published on June 15th, 2014
Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise The Smithsonians National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute celebrated several births recently. During the past several weeks, 31 new residents have been born, many of which were endangered species. A short-eared elephant shrew was born May 8 at the Zoos Small Mammal House. The short-eared elephant shrew is the smallest of the 17 living species of elephant shrew, weighing between less than one-third of an ounce and 1.5 ounces at birth. It is too early to determine the babys sex. Although the tiny shrew has been active since birth, it stayed hidden for the first few days of its life, which is normal. Keepers are now getting more glimpses of the shrew as it comes out of its den to explore. These insect-eating mammals name comes from their noses resemblance to the trunk of an elephant. A fishing cat, recently named Hunter, was born April 15 on Asia Trail. Inhabiting India and Southeast Asia, fishing cat populations are declining, and the species is considered endangered because of habitat loss and hunting for food and fur. The first pair of twin fishing cats was born at the National Zoo in May 2012. Only … Continue reading

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Undergraduate Team Seeks Early Detection of Devastating Goat Virus
Posted: Published on June 15th, 2014
Worcester, Mass. (PRWEB) June 12, 2014 If a virus has got your goat, the sooner you know, the better. Especially if its the Caprine Arthritis-Encephalitis Virus (CAEV), which can spread undetected through a herd, reducing the milk production and lifespan of one of the most important farm animals in the developing world. Creating a simple, inexpensive way for farmers to test their goats (or sheep, which are also susceptible) for CAEV is the goal of the first team of undergraduates from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to enter the undergraduate International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition. iGEM is a global synthetic biology program that challenges students to create biological machines that work within living cells to produce a desired product or process. CAEV is slow to cause visible symptoms, so it can hit many animals before a farmer knows the herd is infected. Animals sick from CAEV may develop severe joint pain that limits mobility, a potentially fatal pneumonia, or a deadly swelling of the brain. There is no cure or vaccine, so animals suspected of having CAEV are either isolated or destroyed. The virus can be transmitted through saliva, nasal discharge, and other excretions, and is often passed from mother … Continue reading
