11.06.2014 - (idw) Max-Delbrck-Centrum fr Molekulare Medizin (MDC) Berlin-Buch Professor Nikolaus Rajewsky of the Max Delbrck Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) was awarded an honorary PhD in human biology and medical genetics by Sapienza University of Rome on June 11, 2014. The award was given in recognition of his achievements in systems biology, in particular for his contributions to elucidate basic mechanisms of gene regulation, and his innovative approaches combining physics, computer science and mathematics with biology. Having graduated in theoretical physics, he developed his outstanding research profile in biomedical research early on in his career. I feel sincerely honored and would like to thank all my colleagues and the many scientists involved. I would also like to express my deep gratitude towards my friends and family, he said. In addition to delivering a lecture at the award ceremony at the Sapienza Aula Magna, Professor Rajewsky, also performed a piano concert. SC Board of Education rejects adoption of new biology standards

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

Photo illustration by Gill Guerry/Staff COLUMBIA - South Carolina has forgone a proposal to have students learn "the controversy." The State Board of Education met on Wednesday to discuss, among several issues, proposed language that required biology students construct scientific arguments that seem to support and seem to discredit Darwinism. The language was proposed by Sen. Mike Fair, R-Greenville, who argued in past hearings against teaching natural selection as fact, adding that there are other theories students deserve to learn. Fair - a member of the Education Oversight Committee - insisted in April that South Carolina had to "teach the controversy." "There's another side," Fair said in April. "I'm not afraid of the controversy ... That's the way most of us learn best." Despite the continued debate for months, however, nothing happened. The board rejected the EOC's proposal. Because the parties can't agree, the state keeps the language based on its 2005 standards. "I was fairly confident that we would prevail," said Rob Dillon, a College of Charleston biology professor and president of South Carolinians for Science Education. "I was very gratified by the support for rigorous science education that came from the State Board of Education." Dillon has been … Continue reading

‘Wonder drugs’ popular topic at Waikato biology event

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

A talk covering the wonder drug effect attracted a packed lecture theatre yesterday, during the University of Waikatos annual Waikato Experience Biology (WEB) Days. Around 550 Year 12 and 13 secondary school students from around the central North Island attended the event from 10-11 June. University of Waikato Biological Sciences lecturer Dr Pawel Olszewski explained how misinterpretation of scientific findings goes as far back as the Babylonian era, when priests/scientists used the lunar eclipse to convince the king that he was at risk of death and that they had the answers to fix him. "These days the consumer is the king and companies are effectively the priests/scientists, who are telling us what food, medicine and other products we should buy to help us live longer, be thinner, and look better," says Dr Olszewski. He went on to show how claims made on product labels are often exaggerated, and do not give the consumer the full story. "What we look for when bringing students to WEB Days are topics which align well with the NCEA Achievement Standards they are studying at school. Dr Olszewskis talk was excellent in the way that it emphasised how opinions must be justified with evidence when … Continue reading
