Sequenom Chief Medical Officer Allan Bombard plans to retire in June, the company said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission this week. Bombard has served as the firm's CMO since early 2009, and as one of its CLIA/CAP lab directors since 2010. Keygene's board of directors has appointed Fayaz Khazi as its new CEO, effective May 5. Khazi recently was VP of business analytics and strategy at Intrexon, where he worked since 2007 in various leadership positions focused on the food and agricultural sectors. He also was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute post-doctoral fellow at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. Ryan Taft has joined Illumina as director of scientific research. Taft is laboratory head and senior research fellow at the University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience. He holds a BSc in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California, Davis. Taft will maintain a joint appointment with UQ while working for Illumina. Texas A&M has a new head of its Department of Biology. The university announced this week that Thomas McKnight, a researcher in both plant molecular and cell biology, will lead the department, which he has worked in for 29 years. McKnight has served as associate head of the department since 2003. McKnight has outlined several priorities for A&M biology, including strengthening faculty mentoring and recognition efforts as well as promoting biology as a vibrant and viable career choice for both current and prospective students. Biology is the central life science, and our faculty is involved in many collaborative research projects with other units across campus, McKnight said in a press release. PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 8-May-2014 Contact: Meera Senthilingam m.senthilingam@wellcome.ac.uk 020-861-17329 Wellcome Trust Single-cell genomics could provide new insight into the biology of Malaria parasites, including their virulence and levels of drug resistance, to ultimately improve treatment and control of the disease, according to new research funded by the Wellcome Trust and the National Institutes of Health. The findings are revealed in a study by researchers at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute and published today in the journal Genome Research. Malaria infections commonly contain complex mixtures of Plasmodium parasites which cause the disease. These mixtures, known as multiple genotype infections (MGI's), can alter the impact of the infection due to parasites competing with one another and can drive the spread of drug resistance. MGI's are extremely common in regions with high levels of malaria infection but their biology is poorly understood. "Up to 70 per cent of infections in sub-Saharan Africa are MGI's and we currently don't know how many genotypes are present and whether parasites come from a single mosquito bite or multiple mosquito bites" says Shalini Nair, first author on the paper.
