Welcome to the Federated Departments of Biological Sciences, a collaboration between Rutgers University-Newark and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Please use the links to your left to navigate our site. The past decade has witnessed tremendous advances in the biological sciences and our Departments have developed a strategic plan to meet the changing needs of our students and our society. We recognize the contribution biology makes to a strong liberal arts education and understand the needs of its majors who are entering a world more biologically complex and sophisticated than a decade ago. Undergraduate students in the program choose courses from among a wide range of research fields to both develop a solid foundation in biology and to build meaningful depth of study in areas of personal interest. In addition to formal lecture and lab courses, students have many opportunities for independent study through seminar courses and research with our outstanding faculty. Learn more about undergraduate opportunities ... Graduate students can choose an MS or PhD program. Both programs stress the importance of the research experience and its value to critical thinking. What's new on Biology May 15, 2010 Not much has been happening here lately. It seems a user named Davichito adopted this wiki in 2008, but since then there has been minimal activity. I am working to revitalize this wiki. If you'd like to help out... I'd appreciate it. Elainaph 04:13, May 15, 2010 (UTC) Helping out To write a new article, just enter the article title in the box below. Deoxyribonucleic acid, is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms and some viruses. It is made of repeated blocks (polymers) called nucleotides, which together form the shape of a double helix. Each nucleotide has a nitrogenous base, a sugar, and one or more phosphate groups. The nitrogenous base is the changing element. It can be adenine, cytosine, guanine or thymine. The bases are either purines or pyrimidines. The purine bases are adenine and guanine and the pyrimidines are cytosine and thymine. The sugar is deoxyribose. What is Biology? Biology is the scientific study of life, which included all of its mechanisms and effects at all spatial and temporal scales here on Earth and throughout the known universe. What is a biologist and what do they do? A biologist is not merely someone who knows a lot of facts about living things. A biologist is a knowledgeable trained problem solver. A biologist is a skilled person capable of asking informed and discerning questions about biological phenomena and who can devise and execute well constructed studies to test those questions. A biologist is someone capable of analyzing, interpreting, and reporting new and existing data and who can use this information to solve problems and answer question concerning life and its effects. Biologists also find new ways to use their knowledge to solve problems in applied fields such as medicine, agriculture, environmental management, biodiversity and conservation, fish and wildlife management, water management and pollution control, renewable resources, and human population growth. Over the past 20 years biologists have even begun to extend their studies to other worlds, searching for signs of life on Mars and the moons of Jupiter. The search for life beyond Earth is, among other … Continue reading

Biology (song) – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Posted: Published on March 31st, 2016

For the 1960 American jazz song, see Sue Raney. "Biology" is a song performed by English-Irish all-female pop group Girls Aloud, taken from their third studio album Chemistry (2005). The song was written by Miranda Cooper, Brian Higgins and his production team Xenomania, and produced by Higgins and Xenomania. Composed of distinct sections, it avoids the verse-chorus form present in most contemporary pop music. "Biology" was released as a single in November 2005, ahead of the album's release. Following the disappointment of "Long Hot Summer", "Biology" returned Girls Aloud to the top five of the UK Singles Chart and became their tenth top ten hit. The music video, consisting only of group shots, witnesses Girls Aloud seamlessly move through various sequences while performing disjointed choreography. "Biology" was promoted through a number of live appearances and has since been performed on all of Girls Aloud's subsequent concert tours. The song, which includes a variety of styles, received widespread acclaim from contemporary music critics. Considered one of Girls Aloud's signature songs, The Guardian referred to "Biology" as "the best pop single of the last decade." "Biology" is composed of a number of distinctly different sections. The song begins with Nadine Coyle singing … Continue reading

Biology – Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Biology is the science of life and living things, and their evolution. Living things include plants, animals, fungi (such as mushrooms), and microorganisms such as bacteria and archaea. People who study biology are called biologists. Biology looks at how animals and other organisms behave and work, and what they are like. Biology also studies how organisms react with each other and the environment. It has existed as a science for about 200 years, and was preceded by natural history. Biology has many research fields and branches. Like all sciences, biology uses the scientific method. This means that biologists must be able to show evidence for their ideas, and that other biologists must be able to test the ideas for themselves. Biology attempts to answer questions such as: "What are the characteristics of this living thing?" (comparative anatomy); "How do the parts work?" (physiology); "How should we group living things?" (classification, taxonomy); "What does this living thing do?" (behaviour, growth); "How does inheritance work? (genetics); "What has been the history of life?" (palaeontology). How do organisms relate to their environment? (ecology). All modern biology is influenced by evolution, which answers the question: "How has the living world come to be as … Continue reading
