The hoo’s hoo of gibbon communication

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2015

The secret communication of gibbons has been interpreted for the first time in a study published in the open access journal BMC Evolutionary Biology. The research reveals the likely meaning of a number of distinct gibbon whispers, or 'hoo' calls, responding to particular events and types of predator, and could provide clues on the evolution of human speech. While lar gibbons (Hylobates lar) are mainly known for their loud and conspicuous songs, they can also produce a number of soft call types known as 'hoo's. These subtle calls have been alluded to in studies dating back to 1940, but due to their volume, they are virtually indistinguishable to the human ear and have been difficult to record and analyse. Researchers using modern recording technology and computer analysis have revealed that distinct hoo calls are made in response to specific events, such as foraging and encountering neighbours, and that subtle differences even distinguish between different predators when used as a warning. Lead author Esther Clarke said: "These animals are extraordinarily vocal creatures and give us the rare opportunity to study the evolution of complex vocal communication in a non-human primate. In the future, gibbon vocalisations may reveal much about the processes … Continue reading

Mother critical of State Examinations Commission policy after son misses out

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2015

The State Examinations Commission does not round up percentages achieved in the Leaving Cert. Photograph: Bryan OBrien sharply criticised what she calls the injustices of the Leaving Cert system after her son missed out on his dream third-level course by a quarter of a percentage point. Last August Leaving Cert student Frankie Martyn missed out on securing a course in biomedical science at NUIG after being denied an A1 in biology despite being only one quarter of a percentage point off 90 per cent. The student remained on 89.75 per cent in biology due to a State Examinations Commission (SEC) policy of not rounding up percentages in the Leaving Cert. This resulted in him securing 535 points instead of the 540 required to enter the biomedical science course. A student at St Josephs in Spanish Point, Frankie achieved three A2s in the science subjects of biology, physics and chemistry, along with an A1 in English. His mother Carmel said yesterday: Frankie is very academic and worked very hard to achieve his dream. However, because of a system which was brought in in 1969, he was denied his chance. If a student gets 89.75 per cent on a paper, clearly it … Continue reading
