Secret lives of our profs: Assistant Professor of biology Brian Piasecki

Posted: Published on April 4th, 2015

Assistant Professor Brian Piaseckis life revolves around dissecting questions about living things and figuring out how they work. This Assistant Professor of Biology has been teaching at Lawrence since 2011, but he is far from his hometown, Plano, Texas. Piasecki describes it as a pretty suburban place with lots of strip malls and roads and middle class houses that look like cookie-cutter houses. However, he never fully felt comfortable there, and he had a journey to take before he finally arrived at the place that would be perfect for him. Piasecki did not know until his junior year of college at the University of North Texas that he wanted to teach biology, but his passion for biology was sparked years prior. I was influenced by my freshman biology teacher, Mrs. Poovey; she was really a lot of fun and she made biology a lot of fun, reflected Piasecki. When asked why he decided to teach biology as a career, Piasecki enthusiastically replied, I ended up deciding that I really liked the types of questions I could answer in biology. I really enjoyed learning how living things work. There are two different broad types of mindsets; youre either taking patterns that … Continue reading

With geomagnetic compass hooked to the brain, blind rats act like they can see

Researchers say the findings suggest that a similar kind of neuroprosthesis might also help blind people walk freely through the world. Most notably, perhaps, the findings show the incredible flexibility of the mammalian brain. "The most remarkable point of this paper is to show the potential, or the latent ability, of the brain," says Yuji Ikegaya of the University of Tokyo. "That is, we demonstrated that the mammalian brain is flexible even in adulthood--enough to adaptively incorporate a novel, never-experienced, non-inherent modality into the pre-existing information sources." In other words, he says, the brains of the animals they studied were ready and willing to fill in "the 'world' drawn by the five senses" with a new sensory input. What Ikegaya and his colleague Hiroaki Norimoto set out to do was to restore … Continue reading

New biology building may put trees at risk

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2015

In a February meeting with members of the science faculty, Associate Provost for Science & Technology James Slattery presented tentative plans for the new Yale Biology Building, a multifunctional facility slated to be built in the footprint of the J.W. Gibbs Laboratory on Science Hill. When professor of biology Sidney Altman asked about what would happen to the surrounding trees four massive oaks alongside the Gibbs laboratory the response by the associate provost stuck with him. I asked Slattery specifically about [the trees], Altman said. And he had no emotion when he said they are going to be cut down. Slattery declined to comment. According to molecular biophysics and biochemistry and physics professor Jonathon Howard, who serves on the building planning committee, planning is still in its early stages and there is no formalized design for the building. Still, he said it is quite possible that the trees between Gibbs and the Whitney Avenue Lot 22 parking lot would have to be removed to accommodate the larger footprint of the new building. I am a great tree lover dont get me wrong, I love trees but on the other hand, this is going to be an absolutely fantastic opportunity for … Continue reading
