Is The Biotech Stock Correction A Buying Opportunity Or A Wake Up Call?

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2015

Disclosure: I own shares of AMGN and GILD Biotechnology stocks have been in a sharp correction this week. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF dropped close to one-percent in early Thursday trade, following a 1.89% decline on Wednesday; and the SPDR S&P biotech ETF registered similar losses. Is the correction a buying opportunity or a wake up call? Both. On the one side, the correction is a buying opportunity for biotech companies with sound fundamentals. That is, companies which have a broad portfolio of products that have pasted both the lab test and the market test, and delivered the milk, ie profits on Wall Street. Gilead Sciences is one of these companies, which has close to $25 billions in revenues and trades at a forward PE of less than 10. Amgen and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals have solid revenues, though they trade at higherbut reasonable for a fast growing sectorPEs. Thats how biotechnologyinvestinghas turned into a hot theme in the mass and social media. US biotech stocks may fall further as short interest rises

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2015

NEW YORK: A 4 percent decline in biotechnology stocks on Wednesday sent the Nasdaq Composite Index to its largest one-day loss in nearly a year, and some investors are betting that the once-hot sector has further to fall. Short interest has risen in a number of biotech names perceived as vulnerable to a selloff after a rally that has sent the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index up 42 percent over the last year even after this week's declines. Overall, a screen of about 1,650 mid-cap U.S. companies shows biotech stocks, on average, have a short interest ratio of about 11.6 percent, compared with the average mid-cap name's 6.4 percent in short interest, according to Starmine, a Thomson Reuters company. This suggests a greater number of bets on these stocks falling than the rest of the market. That is occurring as other fund managers boost their bets on the high-flying names. Fund managers now have an average of 4.1 percent of their portfolios in biotechnology companies, nearly double the level of three years ago, according to Lipper data. We think that investor sentiment is a bit overdone, said John Fraunces, a co-portfolio manager of the Turner Medical Sciences Long/Short fund , whose fund … Continue reading

Benefits and Risks of Biotechnology

Posted: Published on March 25th, 2015

There are numerous discussions about the development and use of modern biotechnology, especially about the safety of genetically modified foods. Benefits for human health, as well as risks can be divided into four categories: 1. Benefits: - Increased food safety - Enhanced nutritional composition of foods - Food with even more health benefits - Reduction of certain chronic diseases related to diet By the application of genetic engineering, organoleptic properties and expiration date of certain grains were able to improve. Delaying the rotting process of fruit and vegetables provides better quality, taste, color and texture. With the help of genetic engineering it is possible to create foods with greater amount of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. Also, by increasing crop yields deforestation is prevented, and, the most important for the developing countries, economic development is accelerated. For developing countries, particularly useful is growing beans resistant pathogens, virus-resistant papaya, cotton, and rice enriched with vitamin A. The production of certain vaccines for oral use is also important, which would be cheaper, easier to store and less stressful to use than the previous ones, and would be used for prevention of diarrhea, cholera and hepatitis B. On the other hand, for many researchers, … Continue reading
