Is The Biotechnology Bubble Turning Into Mania?

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2015

Disclosure: I own shares of AMGN For more than three years, the big run in a number of small biotechnology stocks that have little or no revenues had all the elements of a bubble. Now, there are signs that the bubble may be turning into mania, and will eventually burst. Every stock market bubble is different, and can be easily confused with healthy bull markets. But all stock market bubbles follow a certain profile. First comes investor hype over a popular theme an emerging industry that promises to change the world and bring big returns to those who invest in it. Somewhere down the road come the role modelscompanies that made it big carrying this themeturning investor hype into contagion. Then comes easy money by accommodative central banks to provide the air financing for the bubble to grow bigger and bigger. Flurries of IPOs that double, triple, or quadruple the day they make their market debut and sky-high M&A premiums turn investor hype into mania. First gathering of biotech experts aims to establish ethical standards in cellular biotechnology

Posted: Published on March 14th, 2015

ATLANTA, GA (March 13, 2015) -- In May 2015 Atlanta will host Biotechnology and the Ethical Imagination: A Global Summit (BEINGS), an international summit drawing together the world's thought leaders on the highly debated issues of cellular biotechnology. Hundreds of international experts in the fields of science and ethics will work together to establish a future vision and consensus on ethical guidelines and policy standards for research and development of cellular biotechnology. The real-life applications of biotechnology exceed the realms of science, medicine and academia and touch the lives of the average citizen. Reproductive technologies, vaccines, drug development, and other technologies involving stem-cell biology are just a few examples. Cell-based biotechnologies such as synthetic biology also have industrial applications. These technological advances hold the promise of repairing organs and helping regrow missing limbs, of controlling and ultimately curing diseases like Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis and cancer, creating viable organs for transplant purposes and even helping produce life for those otherwise unable to bear children, among other things. Other genetic technologies also used to create new kinds of hybrid animals, to move genes between species to design animals with new kinds of traits, and to engineer bacteria for both medical and industrial … Continue reading
