National Center for Biotechnology Information – Wikipedia …
Posted: Published on November 16th, 2014
The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is part of the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM), a branch of the National Institutes of Health. The NCBI is located in Bethesda, Maryland and was founded in 1988 through legislation sponsored by Senator Claude Pepper. The NCBI houses a series of databases relevant to biotechnology and biomedicine. Major databases include GenBank for DNA sequences and PubMed, a bibliographic database for the biomedical literature. Other databases include the NCBI Epigenomics database. All these databases are available online through the Entrez search engine. NCBI is directed by David Lipman, one of the original authors of the BLAST sequence alignment program and a widely respected figure in bioinformatics. He also leads an intramural research program, including groups led by Stephen Altschul (another BLAST co-author), David Landsman, Eugene Koonin (a prolific author on comparative genomics), John Wilbur, Teresa Przytycka, and Zhiyong Lu. NCBI is listed in the Registry of Research Data Repositories re3data.org.[1] NCBI has had responsibility for making available the GenBank DNA sequence database since 1992.[2] GenBank coordinates with individual laboratories and other sequence databases such as those of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ).[3] … Continue reading

Will Puma Biotechnology (PBYI) Disappoint this Earnings? – Analyst Blog
Posted: Published on November 11th, 2014
Puma Biotechnology, Inc. ( PBYI ) is expected to report third-quarter 2014 results before the opening bell on Nov 11. Last quarter, the company had posted a negative earnings surprise of 53.57%. The four-quarter trailing average surprise is a negative 26.32%. Let's see how things are shaping up for this announcement. Factors at Play With no approved products in its portfolio, Puma Biotechnology is not expected to record any revenues in the third quarter as was the case in the previous quarters. The company's operating expenses will continue to rise during the third quarter. Particularly, its research and development expenses are expected to go up during the quarter as it is investing heavily in its pipeline. The company's primary candidate, neratinib (PB272), is being evaluated for the treatment of different types of tumor in several mid- and late-stage studies. Puma Biotechnology has a licensing agreement with Pfizer ( PFE ) for neratinib. Puma Biotechnology's general and administrative expenses, which increased in the last couple of quarters, may also increase in the third quarter. Higher operating expenses will continue to keep Puma Biotechnology's bottom line under pressure. Earnings Whispers? Our proven model does not conclusively show that Puma Biotechnology is likely … Continue reading

Is there still value in the biotech boom?
Posted: Published on November 10th, 2014
The prospect of investing in biotechnology is still daunting. In the early 2000s the sector was plagued with clinical failures which often meant investors lost out. Confidence in the sector paled, and small innovative companies - often listed on junior markets - struggled to drum up much-needed funds. Perverse as it may seem, the onset of the financial crisis actually improved prospects for the biotechnology sector. For one, their relationship with their big pharma cousins became much closer. With global drugs giants forced to streamline their in-house research and development (R&D) divisions, management teams were forced to look beyond their in-house resources to find the next big blockbuster drug. In healthcare, product portfolios are a key indicator of a company's value, and biotechnology companies offered big pharma a cost-efficient way to build a stack of future medicines. The benefits of these R&D tie-ups flowed both ways. Biotechnology companies that established effective patented technology platforms were able to strike up lucrative licence or royalty deals with big pharma partners, or were occasionally bought out at a hefty premium. Renewed confidence As this changing relationship evolved, confidence in the sector started to build. Over the last 18 months, there's been a veritable … Continue reading
