Indian biotech industry is on the cusp of entering a new era

Posted: Published on October 3rd, 2014

Washington, Oct 3: Indias biotechnology industry is on the cusp of entering a new era as it already has many of the necessities required to grow its bio economy such as a talented and enthusiastic scientific workforce, a top biotech industry leadership has said. In 2012, Indian industry and government leaders set an ambitious yet attainable goal of growing the nations bio economy to more than US $100 billion by 2025, Jim Greenwood, CEO Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) said yesterday. BIO believes that the Indian biotechnology industry is on the cusp of entering a new era when it can provide significant economic growth and development to the people of India and around the world, he said. It needs only to address some fundamental areas of policy and regulation, and take steps towards creating an environment that encourages, not discourages, investment by innovators. Because we see the potential that can result from collaborating with our Indian partners, BIO and the Association of Biotechnology-Led Enterprises produced a comprehensive road map for the nations biotechnology industry, in which we identify major areas that require Prime Minister Modis attention, Greenwood said. Without developing a pro-innovation environment, the Indian biotechnology industry will not be able … Continue reading

An industry group for biotechnology -- one of the sectorseconomic developers often cite as a growth prospect for New Orleans -- is building a state chapter based in the city and seeking members. Called LouisianaBio, it's an affiliate of the international Biotechnology Industry Association and member of the Council of State Bioscience Associations. The Louisiana executive director, Rhonda Melancon, said in an announcement that the group offers networking, education, legislative and public relations services and a discounted purchasing program for bioscience companies. "By the end of year one, our members will have a far greater understanding about the work of their colleagues in other parts of the state, and beyond, which will hopefully lead to new discussions, new collaborations, and new discoveries," Melancon said in the statement. DEFINITION of 'Biotechnology' The use of living organisms to make products or run processes. Biotechnology is best known for its huge role in the field of medicine, and also finds application in other areas such as food and fuel. As biotechnology involves understanding how living organisms function at the molecular level, it combines a number of disciplines biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, science and technology. Modern biotechnology continues to make very significant contributions to extending the human lifespan and improving the quality of life through numerous ways, including providing products and therapies to combat diseases, generating higher crop yields, and using biofuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The term biotechnology is believed to have been coined in 1919 by Hungarian engineer Karl Ereky. Also known as biotech. Biotechnology in its basic form has found application for thousands of years, when humans first learnt to produce bread, beer and wine using the natural process of fermentation. For centuries, the principles of biotechnology were restricted to agriculture harvesting better crops and improving yields by using the best seeds and breeding livestock. The field of biotechnology began to develop rapidly from the 19th century, with the discovery of microorganisms, Mendels study of genetics, and … Continue reading
