Tool helps evaluate likely outcomes for elderly patients with traumatic brain injury – Medical Xpress
Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2017
March 3, 2017 Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death for people age 45 and younger in the United States, but, as people live longer, this type of injury is becoming more prevalent in those 75 and older. Treatment and recovery of the elderly population is even more challenging for physicians and other caregivers because these patients are more likely to have other health issues that can complicate their recovery and rehabilitation. A team of investigators at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., has developed a tool that accounts for variables such as age and severity of brain injury to help physicians and hospital staff calculate a patient's likelihood of survival and returning to independence after hospital discharge. They reported their findings in a study published online as "an article in press" on the website of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons in advance of print publication. "This tool may allow us to have an informed conversation with family members of elderly patients with isolated traumatic brain injury. We can tell them the chances of survival and discharge to an independent status based on outcomes in similarly injured patients in this large study population," said … Continue reading

Lanyon Bowdler to host brain injury networking event in Shropshire – shropshirelive.com
Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2017
Professionals from the world of brain injury treatment and rehabilitation are being invited to come together for a networking event being held in Shropshire. The event is being hosted by law firm, Lanyon Bowdler, and will give people the opportunity to continue the discussions kicked off at a major conference held by the firm about the challenges faced by those surviving brain injuries. Key issues raised at the conference highlighted the gap between acute care and rehabilitation, with experts saying that advances in medical treatment meant that more people were surviving brain injuries but then struggling to find appropriate support when they left hospital. The networking forum event will take place from 8.30am to 10am on March 22 at the Marches Growth Hub in Battlefield, Shrewsbury, and is free to attend. Neil Lorimer, head of Lanyon Bowdlers personal injury team, said the event was a great opportunity to continue the discussion. He said: This is the second time we have held a networking forum focusing on brain injury and the last one was a great success. We had representatives from a wide range of professional organisations and charities at the last event, such as The Movement Centre in Oswestry and … Continue reading

Artificial intelligence aids scientists in uncovering hallmarks of … – Medical Xpress

March 1, 2017 by Suzanne Leigh Credit: CC0 Public Domain Scientists have used a unique computational technique that sifts through big data to identify a subset of concussion patients with normal brain scans, who may deteriorate months after diagnosis and develop confusion, personality changes and differences in vision and hearing, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder. This finding, which is corroborated by the identification of molecular biomarkers, is paving the way to a precision medicine approach to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with traumatic brain injury. Investigators headed by scientists at UC San Francisco and its partner institution Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) analyzed an unprecedented array of data, using a machine learning tool called topological data analysis (TDA), which "visualizes" diverse datasets across multiple scales, a technique that has never before been used to study traumatic brain injury. TDA, which employs mathematics derived from topology, draws on the philosophy that all data has an underlying shape. It creates a summary or compressed representation of all the data points using algorithms that map patient data into a multidimensional space. The new research relied on a TDA platform developed by Ayasdi, an advanced analytics company based … Continue reading

More than half of prisoners may have had a brain injury – Herald Scotland
Posted: Published on March 2nd, 2017
HUNDREDS of prisoners in Scottish jails may have suffered severe brain injuries, leaving them unable to be effectively rehabilitated and more likely to reoffend. Those affected include dozens of women prisoners who have been victims of domestic violence. Others have neurological illnesses or brain injuries related to gang violence, or events in their criminal past, or childhood, which have often gone untreated, MSPs investigating healthcare in Scottish jails have been warned such individuals are unlikely to benefit from programmes to cut reoffending, unless more screening and treatment is offered for their conditions. The British Psychological Society says approximately 60 per cent of inmates of adult prisons and young offenders institutions will have suffered a head injury at some point in their life, with 45 per cent having had an injury so severe it left them unconscious. This is about three to four times the level found in the general population. Meanwhile seven to 16 per cent have suffered a severe head injury potentially hundreds of the current prison population of 7,742. The Health and Sport Committee at Holyrood is investigating healthcare in prisons. In a submission to this inquiry, the BPS calls attention to a report by the Glasgow-based National … Continue reading

A WOMAN who nearly lost her life after mistaking a major brain injury for a hangover has talked about her journey for the first time. Five years ago, Gemma Beales suffered horrendous headaches following a night out with her husband Mike though put her pain down to a hangover. The 33-year-olds condition soon deteriorated, and she collapsed on the bathroom floor after suffering from seizures. The former Coventry resident was rushed to University Hospital by ambulance where her seizures were controlled and she was taken for an MRI scan. The scan found a bleed to Gemmas brain, as well as a large number of clots over her body, and she was admitted to Critical Care. More concerning news was revealed to Gemmas family the following day. She said: The next morning, a senior nurse rang my parents to say that Id seriously deteriorated and needed to have an emergency operation. They didnt know if Id survive, or what long-term effects the brain injury might have had, but that operation saved my life. Even my consultant said it was a miracle that Id survived. CHILDREN as young as nine-years-old are being treated for alcohol-related brain damage in Glasgow, the Evening Times can reveal. Along with dozens of children, thousands more adults have also received help from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) in the past six years. They have been admitted to hospital for mental and behaviour problems relating to alcohol addiction and, including psychotic disorders, withdrawal, delirium, harmful use of alcohol and alcohol dependence. It comes as alcohol campaigners have called for booze adverts to be banned before 11pm, and magazine and newspapers adverts for drinks to be restricted. In total since January 2011, more than 17,000 people, including 163 children, have been treated for some form of alcohol-related brain damage. Figures obtained by the Evening Times show a nine-year-old boy was the youngest person to be treated for a mental or behaviour disorder due to drinking alcohol by NHSGGC. The youngster was first seen by doctors in 2012. There have also been 69 girls and 93 boys, ranging from 13 to 17-years-old, who received treatment since 2011. Of the 17,224 adults suffering from some type of alcohol-related brain damage, the largest group (around 7400 people) were between 45 and 64 years old. … Continue reading

Video Co-accused getting bail was 'a mistake' - Lee Schoombie 2016-02-23 14:12 Last month we spoke to Lee Schoombie, brother of the late Carl Schoombie who passed away following an altercation at Tiger Tiger nightclub in Cape Town last November. Lee came back to our studio to give us an update on the Justice for Carl campaign. Watch. WATCH Cape Town A man who died after being dragged from an Uber taxi and attacked, had brain injuries usually only seen in people killed in car accidents, the Western Cape High Court heard on Monday. "These [diffuse axonal] injuries are quite unusual in cases of assault," State witness Dr Gavin Kirk testified. "This is because the degree of force required for the acceleration is usually more than is typical in assaults, blows with fists, and punches," the forensic pathologist told the court. He said blows delivered in a boxing ring would rarely be sufficient to cause this type of injury. Brent Henry and Juane Jacobs are on trial for the murder of Carl Schoombie, who died from severe injuries after the two men accused him of starting trouble at the Tiger Tiger nightclub in November 2015. The Stellenbosch University graduate and … Continue reading
