Bianchi critical with brain injury

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2014

Formula One driver Jules Bianchi remains in a "critical but stable" condition after suffering a traumatic and devastating brain injury in a crash during Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix. It is still too early to say if, and to what extent, Bianchi will recover from the "diffuse axonal injury", where a shearing force has torn tissue throughout the brain and the brain swells. A statement was released on Tuesday afternoon by Bianchi's team Marussia F1, on behalf of his family and the Mie General Medical Center in Japan where he is being treated, to provide an update on the Frenchman's condition. "Jules remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaichi," the family statement read. "He has suffered a diffuse axonal injury and is in a critical but stable condition. "The medical professionals at the hospital are providing the very best treatment and care and we are grateful for everything they have done for Jules since his accident." It is not dissimilar to the injury sustained by seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher in a skiing accident last December. Schumacher is now recovering at home after coming out of a coma. There is a highly variable outlook … Continue reading

Bianchi brain injury severe, says family

Wednesday, 08 October 2014 10:21 YOKKAICHI: Jules Bianchi is suffering from a serious brain injury sustained in his sickening crash at the Japanese Grand Prix, his family says, as specialists warn the chances of recovery from this kind of condition are slim. The Formula One driver was Wednesday starting his third day in intensive care after the weekend smash, with his worried parents regularly by his bedside. "Jules remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaichi. He has suffered a diffuse axonal injury and is in a critical but stable condition," said a statement issued by the family and the hospital. "The medical professionals at the hospital are providing the very best treatment and care and we are grateful for everything they have done for Jules since his accident." The 25-year-old Bianchi was knocked unconscious in a horrific high-speed crash into a recovery vehicle during Sunday's rain-sodden Japanese Grand Prix. He underwent emergency brain surgery, with doctors saying he was critically ill. A diffuse axonal injury describes trauma that is spread across the brain, rather than in one place, and is caused by the shockwave from the sudden impact of the crash travelling through … Continue reading

Stroke-fighting drug offers potential treatment for traumatic brain injury

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2014

The only drug currently approved for treatment of stroke's crippling effects shows promise, when administered as a nasal spray, to help heal similar damage in less severe forms of traumatic brain injury. In the first examination of its kind, researchers Ye Xiong, Ph.D, Zhongwu Liu, Ph.D., and Michael Chopp, Ph.D., Scientific Director of the Henry Ford Neuroscience Institute, found in animal studies that the brain's limited ability to repair itself after trauma can be enhanced when treated with the drug tPA, or tissue plasminogen activator. "Using this novel procedure in our earlier stroke studies, we found significant improvement in neurological function," said Michael Chopp, Ph.D., scientific director of the Henry Ford Neuroscience Institute. "So we essentially repeated the experiment on lab rats with subacute traumatic brain injury, and with similar remarkable results. "As in stroke treated intra-nasally with tPA, our subjects showed greatly improved functional outcome and rewiring of the cortical spinal tract." The new study was recently published in the Public Library of Science's peer-reviewed online journal PLOS ONE. Commonly called a "clot-buster," tPA is the only FDA-approved treatment for acute ischemic stroke. Acute ischemic stroke occurs when oxygen-rich blood flow to the brain is blocked by a clot. … Continue reading

Brain injury charity questions Chelsea's treatment of Courtois' head injury

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014

Headway, the brain injury charity, has questioned the application of the Premier Leagues regulations over head injuries after Thibaut Courtois played on during Chelseas 2-0 Premier League win over Arsenal yesterday. Chelsea goalkeeper Courtois continued after requiring treatment for a head-knock following a collision with Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez, before being replaced after further treatment and departing Stamford Bridge for precautionary scans in hospital. Headway chief executive Peter McCabe said on the charitys website: The new rules introduced this season were designed to ensure no risks to players health were taken. They clearly state that If there is any suspicion of the player having sustained a concussion, they must be removed from the field of play, and not allowed to return. This incident calls into question whether these rules are working effectively. It is hard to understand how a concussion was not suspected following the sickening clash. Courtois was taken off only after liquid appeared to be coming from his ear. McCabe acknowledged the difficulty of making an assessment from television, but questioned why a safety-first approach was not applied. He added: Bleeding from one or both ears is one of the symptoms to look out for that requires an … Continue reading

Online CE Course on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and the Effects of Aging Newly Updated at HealthForumOnline

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) October 07, 2014 HealthForumOnline (HFO), a nationally-approved (APA, ASWB, NBCC, CA-BBS) provider of online continuing education (CE) is pleased to announce updates to the CE course entitled, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): The Effects of Aging; one of seven online CE courses in HFOs Neuropsychology category. Our extensive online CE resource library for psychologists, social workers, counselors, marital family therapists, and other allied health care professionals contains over 95 courses covering over 20 topics in mental health. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major health care concern in the United States, with approximately 1.5 million new cases of TBI annually resulting in 83,000 new cases of permanent TBI-related disability (1-2). At this time, approximately 6 million persons, or roughly 2% of the U.S. population, are living with a TBI-related disability. More recent estimates report that each year 235,000 Americans are hospitalized for nonfatal TBI, 1.1 million are treated in emergency departments, and 50,000 die (3). It is an especially relevant healthcare concern in light of the number of recent veterans returning from combat with TBI. By the year 2020, the World Health Organization estimates that almost 10 million people will suffer from TBI annually worldwide (4). While new … Continue reading

$17M award aims to improve clinical trials for traumatic brain injury

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014

An unprecedented, public-private partnership funded by the Department of Defense (DoD) is being launched to drive the development of better-run clinical trials and may lead to the first successful treatments for traumatic brain injury, a condition affecting not only athletes and soldiers, but also millions among the general public, ranging from youngsters to elders. Under the partnership, officially launched Oct. 1 with a $17 million, five-year award from the DoD, the research team, representing many universities, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), companies and philanthropies, will examine data from thousands of patients in order to identify effective measures of brain injury and recovery, using biomarkers from blood, new imaging equipment and software, and other tools. Each year more than 2.5 million people in the U.S. seek medical care for traumatic brain injuries that arise when blows to the body or nearby explosions cause the brain to collide with the inside of the skull. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention an estimated 2 percent of the U.S. population now lives with TBI-caused disabilities, at an annual cost of about $77 billion. No treatment for acute TBI and concussion has proved to be effective. TBI is really a … Continue reading
