Man Arrested In Shaking Of Infant Son, Causing Irreparable Brain Damage

Posted: Published on August 13th, 2014

RANCHO CUCAMONGA (CBSLA.com) A San Bernardino County man Tuesday was being held on $2 million bail for causing severe injury to his infant sons brain that left the child in a comatose state. Weifang Tang, 32, was arrested Aug. 7 on suspicion of child abuse with great bodily injury resulting in a comatose state, paralysis of a child under 8, the San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department said. Tang and the childs mother, who came to America from China to give birth to the victim, brought the 2-month-old to the hospital Aug. 3 after he began experiencing unexplained seizures, vomiting and uncontrollable limb movement. The baby was then moved the pediatric intensive-care unit of Loma Linda University Childrens Medical Center. Further examination and testing revealed the infant had suffered a traumatic brain injury, causing blood to pool in the brain cavity depriving the infant of oxygen needed to sustain brain life, detective David Clifford said. Through an investigation, detectives determined that the baby suffered from shaken-baby syndrome on two occasions. Officials say Tang delayed taking the boy to ahospital for two days. Due to the lack of immediate treatment, the victim also suffered from oxygen deprivation causing irreparable damage to his … Continue reading

Long recovery after thong slip causes brain injury

Posted: Published on August 13th, 2014

"I FELT like I was locked in a cage for 18 months. I could understand what was happening, but I just couldn't articulate anything." Graeme Gates knows his experience is one shared by 1.6million Australians with a brain injury. After two-and-a-half years of relentless work to retrain his mind and body, the Toowoomba father-of-two is finally able to share his story. Life was turned upside down when Graeme and his wife Paula were moving house from Dubbo to Ipswich in January, 2012. Of all things, it was a slippery thong that caused the whole ordeal. Graeme was moving boxes into his new garage when he lost balance and hit his head. TOP STORIES TODAY: He was only in hospital for two days. From thereon in, it was up to Paula and their two teenage daughters to bring back the man they loved. Graeme was "basically mute" and the few words he did say were jumbled. This lasted for months. He was constantly exhausted and felt nauseous for 18 months - an infuriating turn of events for someone who, before the accident, regularly ran triathlons. "You don't realise they can understand what's going on, but they can't express it and they … Continue reading

Brain tissue created in laboratory for first time by researchers in America Tissue takes form of 'doughnut' made from partitioned nerve cells and fibres The work could accelerate research in to head injuries and dementia It may also provide alternative to distressing tests conducted on animals By Julian Robinson Published: 21:03 EST, 11 August 2014 | Updated: 02:39 EST, 12 August 2014 Brain tissue has been made in a laboratory for the first time amid hopes the work could aid research into dementia and head injuries (file picture) Brain tissue has been created in a laboratory for the first time amid hopes the work could aid research into dementia and head injuries. So-called brain 'doughnuts' made from partitioned nerve cells and fibres have been grown by scientists in the US. In future, they could be used to study damage caused by injury and disease, improve understanding of brain function, or aid the development of new treatments. They could also provide an alternative to distressing tests conducted on animals. Each doughnut 'ring' consists of neuron cell bodies, while bundles of connecting axon fibres fill the centre. The structures, measuring up to 1.2 centimetres across, mimic the kind of compartmentalisation found in … Continue reading

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may be key in treating PTSD and TBI

Posted: Published on August 12th, 2014

CENTRAL TEXAS - Veterans could soon have a better way to treat post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries. Some medical officials believe this could have a big impact on the number of suicides by returning vets. Now local counties are signing on to back a new course of treatment. Both Milam and Lampasas Counties passed resolutions Monday in support of using hyperbaric oxygen therapy for veterans. The use of hyperbaric oxygen chambers has been around for years, but medical officials are just now taking note of the healing effects they could have on the brain. Veterans suffering from PTSD or TBI could soon be on the mend with the help of hyperbaric oxygen therapy or H-BOT. Rainey Owen, whose grandson suffered from TBI after surviving three improvised explosive devices in Afghanistan, says many veterans in Texas would benefit from the treatment. 125,000 Texas veterans, that while they were in fields of combat, had some forms of brain injury, a concussion, they loss consciousness, something of that nature." Owen is working to raise awareness and bring hyperbaric oxygen therapy to Texas veterans. "If we have 125,000 of them we got a bunch of people that are handicapped every bit as … Continue reading

Experts call for increased awareness of links between brain injuries and crime

Posted: Published on August 12th, 2014

EXPERTS have called for increased awareness in the criminal justice system of how brain injuries are linked to offending. The British Psychological Society says the "hidden" nature of brain injuries and neurodisabilities means many offenders experience discriminating treatment when entering the system. MSPs on Holyrood's Justice Committee took evidence from a panel of doctors and academics on the issue. Research has shown that the level of brain injuries among offenders in custody is much higher than in the general population. Professor Tom McMillan, professor of clinical neuropsychology, at the University of Glasgow, told MSPs that a study of three prisons in the Glasgow area showed 23 per cent of prisoners had suffered a head injury in their lives, with 50 per cent of these classified as severe. A report by Professor Huw Williams, of the Centre for Clinical Neuropsychology Research at the University of Exeter, found that despite the higher prevalence among offenders, it is rare for criminal justice professionals to consider whether an offender may have a brain injury, or for appropriate rehabilitation services to be offered. His report suggests the need for increased awareness of brain injury throughout the criminal justice process and in related areas such as … Continue reading

Bioengineers Make Functional 3D Brain-Like Tissue Model

Posted: Published on August 11th, 2014

Released: 6-Aug-2014 5:00 PM EDT Embargo expired: 11-Aug-2014 3:00 PM EDT Source Newsroom: Tufts University Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, Mass. (August 11, 2014) --The human brain remains one of the least understood organs in the human body, because of its complexity and the difficulty of studying its physiology in the living body. Tufts University researchers today announced development of the first reported complex three-dimensional model made of brain-like cortical tissue that exhibits biochemical and electrophysiological responses and can function in the laboratory for months. The engineered tissue model offers new options for studying brain function, disease and trauma, and treatment. The National Institutes of Health funded research is reported in the August 11 Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Advancing the study of brain trauma, disease and therapeutic treatments is something that the paper's senior and corresponding author David Kaplan, Ph.D., has wanted to pursue for a long time. Kaplan is Stern Family professor and chair of biomedical engineering at Tufts School of Engineering. "There are few good options for studying the physiology of the living brain, yet this is perhaps one of the biggest areas of unmet clinical need … Continue reading

The midfielder was left unconscious following a first-half collision with team-mate Cristian Ansaldi, who was challenging Wolfsburg's Ivica Olic for an aerial ball. Suarez required lengthy treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Tiago, with Atletico later confirming details of the injury. "Mario Suarez suffers a traumatic brain injury," they tweeted."He's regained consciousness. He's being taken to the hospital for tests." Raul Garcia had already headed Atletico in front by the time Suarez was stretchered from the field, and added his second nine minutes after the interval. A Mario Mandzukic penalty made it three before Naldo reduced the deficit, but further goals from Koke and Hector put Atleti out of sight. Diego Simeone's men started well andMandzukic tested goalkeeper Diego Benaglio inside the opening minute as the Liga champions looked to end a run ofthree matches without a goal. And it was not long before they were in front, with Garcia rising well to power home a header from Gabi's corner in the 13th minute. Kevin De Bruyne started to cause problems in the Atleti penalty area, but the visitors had an even bigger issue to deal with when Suarez was felled in the 21st minute.
