InfraScan Expands in Asia with Regulatory Approvals of its Ruggedized Handheld Brain Hematoma Detector
Posted: Published on December 12th, 2013
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) December 12, 2013 InfraScan, a medical device company specializing in brain injury diagnostic products, announced today that it has obtained regulatory clearances in Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand for the Infrascanner Model 2000, a ruggedized handheld brain hematoma detector. The Infrascanner Model 2000 has also received clearances from the US FDA, the European CE Mark, and Health Canada. The Infrascanner Model 2000 is a handheld device with a disposable patient interface that uses Near-Infrared (NIR) technology to detect intracranial bleeding, identifying those patients who would most benefit from immediate referral to a CT scan and neurosurgical intervention. In the triage of head trauma patients, the Infrascanner can identify patients most likely to have intracranial bleeding. The Infrascanner is being used in the following applications: for battlefield triage of soldiers with traumatic brain injury, for triage in remote and suburban locations, on the sidelines of sporting events, and by first responders in ambulances. It is also being used for triage in emergency rooms of hospitals, and for bedside monitoring in intensive care units. "The regulatory approvals in Asia allow InfraScan to offer an industry first, powerful tool for use by medical professionals in some of the main world … Continue reading

Brain’s never-before-seen cellular response to concussions could lead to therapy
Posted: Published on December 12th, 2013
Dec. 11, 2013 The lifelong fallout of a concussive brain injury is well-documented. A blow to the head -- whether it comes from an NFL tackle, a battlefield explosion or a fall off a ladder -- can cause brain damage responsible for a debilitating degree of memory loss, mood swings, seizures and more. And though the blunt instrument that inflicts such damage is typically known, the cellular mechanisms that inflict such trouble have so far remained a mystery. Now, a biology student at Stanford and researchers at the National Institutes of Health have devised a method for observing the immediate effects of a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) in real time in mice. The work has revealed how individual cells respond to the injury and has helped the researchers suggest a possible therapeutic approach for limiting brain damage in humans. The results were published online in Nature on Dec. 8. The bulk of direct research concerning the physiological effects of TBIs is conducted post mortem. Scientists dissect a deceased patient's tissue to learn the full extent of the injury and what types of brain cells were damaged or killed. But very little is known about what happens at the cellular … Continue reading

Any injury that results in trauma to the scalp, skull, or brain can be classified as a head injury. The terms traumatic brain injury and head injury are often used interchangeably in medical literature.[1] This broad classification includes neuronal injuries, hemorrhages, vascular injuries, cranial nerve injuries, and subdural hygromas, among many others.[2] These classifications can be further categorized as open (penetrating) or closed head injuries. This depends on if the skull was broken or not.[3] Because head injuries cover such a broad scope of injuries, there are many causesincluding accidents, falls, physical assault, or traffic accidentsthat can cause head injuries. Many of these are minor, but some can be severe enough to require hospitalization.[4] The incidence (number of new cases) of head injury is 1.7 million people in the United States alone each year. About 3% of these incidences lead to death. Adults suffer head injuries more frequently than any age group. Their injuries tend to be due to falls, motor vehicle crashes, colliding or being struck by an object, and assaults. Children, however, tend to experience head injuries due to accidental falls and intentional causes (such as being struck or shaken). Head injury usually occurs in toddlers as they … Continue reading

Any athlete can wind up with a head injury such as a concussion. A fall, a collision or a blow to the head can result in a minor headache or a major head trauma. But because it's difficult to determine the severity of any head injury without a medical evaluation, it's important to obtain medical treatment for any head injury. Any blow to the head during sports--even those that appear minor--can result in a serious head injury, particularly if the athlete continues playing sports. In fact, it's not uncommon for the warning signs or symptoms of a head injury to be delayed for several hours or even days after the initial head trauma. In some cases, delaying head injury treatment can have serious, and even life-threatening consequences. If you suspect a head injury in yourself or someone you're with, even if you don't see any significant signs or symptoms, be safe, and follow these head injury treatment guidelines. A Head Injury Can Be to Difficult Diagnose Medical Author: Benjamin C. Wedro, MD, FAAEM Medical Editors: Melissa Conrad Stppler, MD Minor head injuries are a routine occurrence. From toddlers falling against tables, kids bumping heads playing ball, to an elderly person falling down; people often lead with their heads when they move about. Usually, a few stars are seen, a headache happens, and all is well. Sometimes it isn't so clear. The person may be knocked out for a few seconds, may vomit, and perhaps may have some loss of memory but by the time the doctor visits the bedside, everything is back to normal. The diagnosis of a concussion is made. But now what? What do you do with somebody who acts and appears normal, even though there was a history of a head injury? Who will have bleeding in their brain and who won't? Who needs a CT scan and who just needs to go home? Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is usually caused by a violent blow to the head. It could also be caused by an object entering brain tissue, such as a bullet. Injuries can be minor and heal without treatment, or they can be major. Major injuries can result in profound injury and disability or even death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over one million people experience a traumatic brain injury annually in the United States. Of these, approximately 50,000 die. The CDC estimates that over five million people in the United States have a long-term need for assistance in performing routing daily activities due to a brain injury. About 75 percent of the brain injuries sustained … Continue reading

Brain Damage: Symptoms, Causes, Treatments
Posted: Published on November 14th, 2013
Brain damage is an injury that causes the destruction or deterioration of brain cells. In the U.S., every year, about 1.5 million people have some type of brain injury. And approximately 5.3 million people suffer from the effects of brain damage. About 50,000 die as a result of brain injury. Medical costs and lost productivity are estimated at between $48 billion and $60 billion per year. All traumatic brain injuries are head injuries. But head injury is not necessarily brain injury. There are two types of brain injury: traumatic brain injury and acquired brain injury. Both disrupt the brains normal functioning. Both traumatic brain injury and acquired brain injury occur after birth. And neither is degenerative. Sometimes, the two terms are used interchangeably. There is a kind of brain damage that results from genetics or birth trauma. It's called congenital brain damage. It is not included, though, within the standard definition of brain damage or traumatic brain injury. Some brain injuries cause focal -- or localized -- brain damage, such as the damage caused when a bullet enters the brain. In other words, the damage is confined to a small area. Closed head injuries frequently cause diffuse brain damage, which … Continue reading

Brain injuries can happen to anyone and from nearly any type of accident. Even though symptoms may not appear immediately, immediate treatment is critical for brain injuries. LOS ANGELES, CA, November 08, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In 2009, actress Natasha Richardson fell during a beginner skiing lesson. At first, she did not seem to be seriously hurt. She talked and made jokes before returning to her hotel room. There, however, she complained of head pain and was taken to a hospital. Richardson later died of an epidural hematoma, a brain injury that happens when the arteries tear after the skull is struck hard, resulting in bleeding. Richardson's tragic story illustrates two important points about brain injuries. First, brain injuries can happen to anyone and from nearly any type of accident. Second, even though symptoms may not appear immediately, immediate treatment is critical for brain injuries. Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) happen when a blow to the head or a penetrating injury disrupts normal brain activity. They are common - about 3.5 million people suffered from a TBI in 2009, though most were concussions. TBIs contribute to nearly one-third of all injury-related deaths in this country. Causes Of Brain Injuries The cause of … Continue reading
