SALINE: Despite traumatic brain injury, Jamal Bell thriving artist
Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012
A life can change in an instant, but that doesn't always mean the change is permanent. Saline resident Jamal Bell sustained a traumatic brain injury in a car accident 16 years ago at the age of 6 that left most of his body immobile, but now, thanks to the therapy team at Special Tree Rehabilitation System, based in Romulus, Bell has become his treatment clinic's resident artist. "As long as I've known him, that's been his gig. He must be a right brain kind of kid," said Joe Richert, Special Tree's director of community rehabilitation services. "He's always had that artistic knack and it was obviously something we included in his treatment. It was his interest, and we were able to foster it through his rehabilitation process." For Bell, the type of art doesn't' matter, as long as he can create. He said his craft helps him relax and take his mind off the physical problems he deals with. "I like working with all different mediums. I don't always use the same thing," he said. "I really like calligraphy pen because you can mess up and it can still come out as a good picture." Special Tree specializes in brain … Continue reading

Bisnar | Chase: New Treatment Can Help Auto Accident Victims and Others Recover from Traumatic Brain Injuries
Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012
California brain injury lawyer discusses new breakthrough in treatment of traumatic brain injuries, which researchers believe, will help patients recover. According to an Oct. 17 report in the journal ACS Nano, scientists have found this new advancement in their research to be promising. Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) October 28, 2012 A traumatic brain injury can occur in individuals who suffer a violent blow to the head that causes the brain to collide with the inside of the skull, the report states. The traumatic event may be a car accident, a gunshot wound, an explosion or a football head injury, the article states. Scientists explain the that a brain injury disrupts oxygen-rich blood to the brain. The report states that the brain makes up only 2 percent of a person's weight, but claims about 20 percent of the body's oxygen supply. This is why even a head injury that is considered "mild" such as a concussion can have serious consequences. The ACS Nano article states that the researchers have developed successful lab tests of nanoparticles, which act like antioxidants and quickly restore blood flow to the brain following resuscitation after a brain injury. This research can be of particular significance to … Continue reading

New hope for survivors of stroke and traumatic brain injury
Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012
ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) A new ground-breaking study about to be published in the Adis journal CNS Drugs provides clinical evidence that, for the first time, chronic neurological dysfunction from stroke or traumatic brain injury can rapidly improve following a single dose of a drug that targets brain inflammation, even years after the stroke or traumatic event. The observational study of 629 patients, conducted over the course of nearly two years, documents a diverse range of positive effects, including statistically significant rapid clinical improvement in motor impairment, spasticity, cognition, etc. in the stroke group, with a similar pattern of improvement seen in the traumatic brain injury (TBI) group. The study involved 617 patients treated an average of 42 months after stroke and 12 patients treated an average of 115 months after TBI, long after further spontaneous meaningful recovery would be expected. The study was conducted at the Institute of Neurological Recovery (INR) in the USA. The drug utilized was etanercept, a therapeutic that selectively binds and neutralizes an inflammatory immune molecule that may remain elevated for years following stroke. Etanercept was administered utilizing a novel delivery method, invented by Edward Tobinick M.D., lead author of the study. "These results represent … Continue reading

HBOT in TBI Study Chronology By Paul G Harch MD part 1a After more than 10 years of continued resistance by military medicine, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has finally been shown to be more effective than ANY other treatment for traumatic brain injury, post-concussive syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, and concussive depression. The biggest fault of the therapy is that it works so much better than any other treatment; it is "too good to be true." So, here is a bit of history on how the military medical hyperbaric medicine study got started, and where we are today.
