Fish Oil: Treatment for Brain Injuries?

(CNN) Time seemed to slow as Marjan Ghassemi saw her 17-year-old son, Bobby, lying in a hospital bed after a car crash. He had a thick band of gauze wrapped around his head and a tangle of tubes protruding from his body. A hole was cut into his windpipe, and the hollow-sounding hiss of machines helping him breathe filled the room. At that point, there was no telling whether he would live or die, but Marjan was determined not to cry. From day one, when we got there, I didnt want him to know we were crying, that we were upset, she said. I wanted all positive energy in the room. I went in his ear and said You fight your way and come back to us. It was March 2010. Bobby Ghassemi had been driving fast along a winding road in Virginia when his car barreled off the road. By the time paramedics arrived, he was in a coma and barely alive. For all intents and purposes, he was dead on the scene, said Dr. Michael Lewis, a physician who later advised the family. Im looking at the reports, and they report a Glasgow Coma Score of 3. A … Continue reading

Understanding the Biomechanics of Traumatic Brain Injury to Find Treatments for the Injured

Images of various preparations used to study traumatic brain injury in Barclay Morrison's laboratory. Left: a mixed culture of brain cells stained for neurons (green) and auxiliary brain cells (red). Center: a hippocampal slice stained for inhibitory neurons (green). Right: a living hippocampal culture on a microelectrode array (black dots) to record neuronal activity after injury. Barclay Morrison, an associate professor of biomedical engineering, compares the brain's physical response to traumatic brain injury to, of all things, a gelatin dessert. If you take a bowl of Jell-O and spin it rapidly, it wiggles inside the confines of the bowl, and as it wiggles, it stretches without changing volume, just like the brain, he says. All it takes is 40 milliseconds to sustain a life-changing brain injury. That blow to the heador mechanical stimulus, as scientists call itsets in motion a cascade of biological responses inside the skull responsible for the injury's devastating consequences. There are more than 1.7 million head injuries in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control, but no treatment as yet for the progressive damage from brain trauma that can lead to disorders ranging from memory loss to Parkinsons, Alzheimers and epilepsy. … Continue reading

Brain injury waiver program enrollment falls far below target

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

The state Department of Health and Human Resources is paying $1.5 million a year to oversee a brain injury program that so far has benefited just three people. The 9-month-old Traumatic Brain Injury Waiver Program is meant to keep Medicaid-eligible West Virginians with brain injuries in their homes and out of institutions. The state planned for 75 people to use the program in its first year, according to documents submitted to the federal government. Enrollment opened Feb. 1. But so far only 28 people have applied for the program and only three have received services. In the meantime, the state is paying New York-based APS Healthcare $1.5 million a year to administer the program. Most of that is federal Medicaid money spent by DHHR. The state's annual share is $375,000. The state awarded a contract to APS to oversee the program in fall 2011. It's worth up to $4.7 million over three years. "It was intended to build the program," DHHR spokeswoman Marsha Dadisman said Tuesday. The state told the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services that each person in the program would cost about $36,000 to care for. If that's true, the state is on track to spend … Continue reading

NFL Traumatic Brain Injuries Bringing Wider Public Awareness to the Trauma and Impact Brain Injury Can Cause

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

The traumatic brain injuries online information and legal resource, McDonaldWorley.com, has released a statement supporting the need for further research and public awareness of treatments and impact related to TBI injuries. The popular law firm made clear that every head injury is a tragedy, but the increased public attention can lead to improvements in the lives of sufferers. Houston, TX (PRWEB) October 23, 2012 According to a Wall Street Journal NFL report, the National Football League has provided a $30 million grant to research brain trauma in an effort to understand further the lifelong impact of these injuries. "People's lives are forever altered following head trauma, compounding the tragedy further, injuries to the brain often go undetected," stated lead TBI attorney, Don Worley. Head injuries are not simply limited to athletes, according to the site. Vehicle accidents, bike falls, work accidents and other tragedies can lead to damage of the brains normal functioning. According to the Wall Street Journal report, autopsies of former football player brains have characteristics similarly seen in Alzheimer's, dementia, and other degenerative brain diseases. "Greater public awareness will lead to people getting the treatment they need, quicker, and may help people avoid the confusion, uncertainty and … Continue reading

New Drug Being Tested for Treatment of Head Injuries, Traumatic Brain Injury

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

Contributor (888) 633-0360 New Zealand researchers have developed a drug that they hope will help those whove suffered head injury, according to an article on nzherald.com. NNZ-2566, now being tested by New Zealands Neuren Pharmaceuticals, was designed to imitate the beneficial chemical reactions that go on in the brain when a concussion or injury occurs. In short, it replicates the bodys automatic efforts to heal itself at the moment it is damaged. The drug has only one final stage of trials to complete and will become available in 2016 at the earliest. This November, its slated to be tested on U.S. soldiers whove experienced brain trauma. Neuren has been working with the U.S. Army since 2004. Soldiers, football players, baseball players, and those who suffer traumatic brain injury in an accident all stand to benefit from the pill. Head injuries run the gamut from relatively trivial to fatal, but in every incidence of injury or trauma to the head, medical attention should be sought immediately to make sure there has not been a concussion. Minor head injuries may not have any effect on the person aside from the pain. Problems from concussions and brain trauma may not develop immediately, however, … Continue reading

Brain injury 'link' to offending

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

18 October 2012 Last updated at 19:39 ET Young people who sustain brain injuries are more likely to commit crimes and end up in prison, research suggests. The University of Exeter study says such injuries can lead maturing brains to "misfire", affecting judgement and the ability to control impulses. It calls for greater monitoring and treatment to prevent later problems. The findings echo a separate report by the Children's Commissioner for England on the impact of injuries on maturing brains and the social consequences. In the report, Repairing Shattered Lives, Professor Huw Williams from the University of Exeter's Centre for Clinical Neuropsychology Research, describes traumatic brain injury as a "silent epidemic". It is said to occur most frequently among children and young people who have fallen over or been playing sport, as well as those involved in fights or road accidents. The consequences can include loss of memory, with the report citing international research which indicates the level of brain injuries among offenders is much higher than in the general population. A survey of 200 adult male prisoners in Britain found 60% claimed to have suffered a head injury, it notes. "It is rare that brain injury is considered by … Continue reading

Newswise DALLAS, Texas Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation (BIR) has received a $2.2 million grant extending for another five years the institutes designation as a National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research Model System site for traumatic brain injury. BIR has held the designation since 2002. The status and funding will help the institute in collaboration with the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) Medical School in Dallas and John Peter Smith (JPS) Hospital in Fort Worth continue to generate valuable new knowledge about how to improve the functional outcomes of patients with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). "This project will support research and training that promotes goals of inclusion, integration, employment and self-sufficiency ultimately providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities and helping them achieve their full potential," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. The grants are awarded in five-year cycles through an extremely selective process. Each site provides the highest level of comprehensive specialty services, from the point of injury through rehabilitation and community reentry. In addition, they contribute to the national Model Systems Database for a better understanding of long-term health outcomes. BIR treats more than 200 patients with brain injury annually and, among the 16 Model System facilities, enrolled … Continue reading

Calgarians head to international concussion conference

Posted: Published on October 18th, 2012

A group of University of Calgary researchers are off to Switzerland for an International Conference on Concussions to share ideas on new detection and treatment methods for the brain injury. Kathryn Schneider is a physiotherapist at the U of Cs Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre. She says concussions are not just about focusing on the brain anymore. Often times individuals, following concussions, report symptoms of dizziness and of blurred vision. So it's something that may help us to then learn more about what happens following a concussion, Schneider said. Schneider will join the U of Cs Dr. Willem Meeuwisse at the meeting in Zurich. Meeuwisse says a lot has changed in the four years since the last conference. At that time the only remedy for a concussion was rest. The problem is for the 30 per cent of people that are not better right away, what do you do with them? Is it more rest, or is it something you can actually intervene or do? Meeuwisse said. Meeuwisse says they're getting closer to answering those questions. The latest information on concussions will be released in a report in April.
