Patients nationwide visit Louisiana for groundbreaking brain damage treatment – WBRZ

Posted: Published on August 6th, 2017

NEW ORLEANS - Hundreds of people from across the globe are traveling to Louisiana with hopes that a doctor's treatment will help heal brain damage in their children. Baton Rouge native Kelsie LeBlanc says her son, Kohen Blades, contracted bacterial meningitis and viral encephalitis after walking in waist-deep water during the August flood. "I remember thinking to myself, 'God please let my baby be okay,'" LeBlanc said. "I told myself 'If I have to ask God to let my baby be okay, then something's wrong." LeBlanc and Kohen visited Dr. Paul Harch's clinic in Marrero. Dr. Harch claims specifically dosing oxygen to certain areas of the brain can help promote growth in tissue. "Centuries or more, we have felt the dictum has been that there's nothing you can do for a brain injury, and it's clearly wrong," Dr. Harch said. Now, hundreds of patients visit his clinic for the treatment. However, Dr. Harch said the demand is so great, many families are often left struggling to find a place to stay when they visit, since the Ronald McDonald House is full. As reported by WWL, Dr. Harch is hoping people will offer the families a place to stay, transportation, and … Continue reading

After publicity of the remarkable recovery of a toddler who nearly drowned, the clinic has been inundated with calls for help, but the families coming here for two months, have nowhere to stay. Megan Lasure vividly remembers when her life changed forever last Christmas time. When she stepped away momentarily, leaving her teenager to watch, her youngest of five children, three-year-old Sam, climbed over a locked fence and nearly drowned in a relative's pool. She remembers one of her older son's reaction. "AndI will never ever forget the look on his face and all he said was, 'Mom,' butI knew something was horribly wrong," … Continue reading

Military Brain Injuries are the Subject of Center for Neurological Studies "Hope After Combat" Study – Markets Insider

Posted: Published on August 4th, 2017

NOVI, Mich., Aug. 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --Thousands of military men and women involvedinthe long raging war in the Middle East have arrived home suffering from undiagnosed traumatic brain injuries, the "invisible wound" of battle. These injuries can lead to stress, depression, insomnia, alcoholism, substance abuse and, all too often, suicide. Center for Neurological Studies (CNS), a Novi-based non-profit, has launched "Hope After Combat," an in-depth study combining ten diagnostic testing disciplines to diagnose and develop individualized treatment for veterans with brain injuries. "Any attempt to treat veterans with traumatic brain injuries begins with an accurate diagnosis," says Randall Benson, M.D., CNS Vice President and Medical Director. "Combat injuries are frequently mis-diagnosed resulting in inappropriate and unsuccessful treatment. We can and must do better. Better diagnoses lead to improved outcomes." Hope After Combat combines diagnostic testing including neurology, neuro-opthalmology and neuropsychology enhanced by CNS' advanced magnetic resonance imaging techniques (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging and susceptibility-weighted imaging. These advanced MRI techniques developed at CNS are significantly more sensitive than traditional MRI imaging and have worked successfully on hundreds of non-combat brain-injury victims. In the Hope After Combat study, once diagnostic testing is complete a treatment plan is developed and the veteran takes … Continue reading

MIAMI Bari Gold was never one for tutus. When she was 4, Roberta Gold gave in to her daughters competitive spirit and enrolled her in a local soccer program. While the rest of the girls picked daisies on the field, Bari played fiercely against her opponents. She joined a travel team at 9 and worked her way through school and club teams as a center back. The first time she was hit in the head with a ball last December, the varsity junior captain of the Palmetto Senior High School team complained of a headache but blamed it on dehydration. Two games later, she was hit in the head again. Bari, 17, couldnt read the words on her U.S. history test and even walked into the wrong classrooms the next day. It felt like I was dreaming, but all the time, she said. Just two weeks ago, she was clocked in the head for a third time at recruiting camp and had to fly home. While researchers, the media and even Hollywood with the movie Concussion have spent time and money bringing brain injury to the forefront of medical discussions diagnosing and treating concussions in young athletes often remains a … Continue reading

Dr. Uzma Samadani, M.D., Ph.D. is paving the way for new eye-tracking diagnostic measures after a brain injury. I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Uzma Samadani speak at a Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance conference for professionals and was mesmerized by what she had to share regarding eye-tracking and the correlation to brain injury. I couldnt soak up enough of what she had to share that day, so I was ecstatic to have the opportunity to interview her for an article, and you might say I was even a little star-struck. You see my eye-tracking was my biggest complaint that no one bothered to acknowledge. Immediately after my fall that resulted in my traumatic brain injury (TBI), I knew my eyes werent quite right. In the beginning I wasnt even able to read the words on my computer screen, like when I was trying to find the local ER. Time passed, and I kept telling every doctor I saw that something wasnt quite right with my eyes. Eventually I was sent to a neuro ophthalmologist who did extensive testing, only to tell me that my eyes were fine. I continued struggling with my vision and went to my eye doctor, … Continue reading

In the wake of a report published by the Washington Post Tuesday, the NFL confirmed to The Chronicle that it has sent a letter to the players union saying it would like to join together in the study of marijuana as a possible substitute for pain relief treatment. The NFL players association (NFLPA) has been investigating the issue since late 2016. We did reach out to the NFLPA in early July proposing we work together on some research on the impact of marijuana and pain management, said NFL spokersperson Brian McCarthy, in an e-mail to The Chronicle. While theyve acknowledged our letter, we dont yet have a commitment from them to work together on this. The players union did not respond to The Chronicles request for comment Tuesday. But Kyle Turley did. The long-time league standout and rebel, who is now advocating for the use of medical marijuana in the NFL, was ecstatic about the news. Thats a huge deal. Its massive, said Turley, a former offensive lineman who struggled with post-career opioid addiction and who … Continue reading
