The human bodys endocannabinoid system does miraculous things such as protecting our nervous system in times of trauma. That is the finding of a team of scientists fromthe Hebrew University of Jerusalem, whose research suggests thatrats and mice subjected to traumatic brain injury (TBI) showed significantly better recovery when treated with cannabinoid compounds. 2-Arachidonoylglycerol or 2-AGis anendocannabinoid, ana naturally occurring compound created by you body.2-AGis foundat relatively high levels in the central nervous system and for good reason. Traumatic brain injury or TBI is just that, damage to the brain caused by an external force. Although much of the mention of this condition has been recently related to football players and veterans of war zones, it affects people of ages, from all walks of life. More than 2 million visits to the ER each year are related to TBI events like concussion from auto accidents, falls and assaults. Falls account in 50 percent of TBI in children under 14 years old and over 60 percent of seniors. It is the leading cause of disability and premature death in the world. What Causes Dementia? Traumatic Head Injury During Midlife Can Increase Risk By 90 Percent – Medical Daily
Posted: Published on July 7th, 2017
New research has found thata serious head injury experienced at some point in your life may significantly increase your risk of developing dementia. According to the report, head injuries that cause lesions in the brain and require a person to stay in a hospital for three days or more can double a persons dementia risk, but this risk is greatest when the head injury is sustained during midlife. The study found that people who experience serious head injuries that require hospitalization are 90 percent more likely to develop non-Alzheimers dementia than those with with more mild head injuries that didnt lead to brain lesions, New Scientist reported. Results of the study, which was based on 40,000 people who had sustained some type of head injury in their lifetime, found that 696 of the 19,936 people with severe head injuries went on to develop dementia. This was compared to only 326 of the 20,703 people with milder injuries going on to develop dementia. Whats more, dementia risk was highest in people who sustained severe, traumatic head injuries between the ages of 41 and 50. Marine Corps Systems Command wins award for creating life-saving technology – Quantico Sentry Online
Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017
Marine Corps Systems Command aboard Quantico is bringing innovative, life-saving and award-winning technology to Marines on the front line. The Infrascanner is a portable, medical diagnostic device that provides early detection of intracranial hematomas or bleeding within the skull in the field, potentially saving lives and improving casualty care and recovery. The handheld device uses near-infrared light invisible light that is nearly visible to the naked eye to effectively check for intracranial hematomas on different parts of the skull. With the device, medical personnel at battalion aid stations can quickly assess Marines who may have suffered a head injury. Intracranial hematomas if gone untreated can put pressure on the brain, causing potential brain damage or even death, said Mark Urrutic, project officer for the Family of Field Medical Equipment Team at MCSC. A retired Navy chief hospital corpsman, Urrutic is familiar with the scenarios Marines face that can lead to this type of injury. Marines can sustain these types of injuries by falling and hitting their heads, or by being in close proximity to a blast, which could damage the brain by rattling it within the skull, he said. Successful treatment of traumatic brain injuries often relies on timely diagnosis … Continue reading

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017
July 6, 2017 Veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI) differ from civilians with TBI in some key wayswith potentially important implications for long-term care and support of injured service members and their families. New research from the Veterans Administration TBI Model System is assembled in the July/August special issue of the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation (JHTR). "The VA TBI Model System is uniquely positioned to inform policy about the health, mental health, socioeconomic, rehabilitation, and caregiver needs following TBI," write Guest Editors Risa Nakase-Richardson, PhD, of James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital, Tampa, Fla., and Lillian Stevens, PhD, of Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Richmond, Va. The special issue presents initial reports from a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)-specific database of patients representing all traumatic brain injury (TBI) severity levels. The findings will play a critical role in VA's efforts to meet the long-term needs of veterans with TBI. VA TBI Model System Will Guide Care for Veterans and Families Affected by TBI The initial TBI Model System was developed by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research now the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR)-in 1987. Why does it seem like nobody cares about female concussions? – ESPN
Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017
ESPN senior writer Peter Keating joins OTL to share his findings on concussions in female athletes, featured in ESPN The Magazine and on espnW.com. This story appears in ESPN The Magazine's Body Issue 2017. Subscribe today! EVERY FOUR YEARS or so, some of the world's most prominent scientists gather to synthesize and summarize the latest in brain-injury research. Since first meeting in 2001, the assemblage, called the Concussion in Sport Group, has grown in size and influence. Doctors, athletic trainers and media types around the world take their cues from the recommendations it publishes and from the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) it has developed. When members gathered in Berlin last October, Jiri Dvorak, then FIFA's chief medical officer, said they worked on behalf of some 1billion professional and amateur athletes. For that 2016 symposium, around 400 medical and sports professionals met in the Grand Ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton hotel, with art nouveau stylings that hark back to the days before the world wars and trappings so posh that guests enjoy breakfast honey harvested from a rooftop beehive. Over two days, a stone's throw from where the Berlin Wall used to stand, the leading lights of the sports neuro-establishment made … Continue reading

Acupuncture Found Effective For Stroke Paralysis Recovery – HealthCMi
Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017
Acupuncture is found effective for the treatment of paralysis caused by a stroke. Researches tested the Shujintongluo acupuncture protocol for the treatment of hemiplegia, a type of stroke affecting one side of the body. The addition of acupuncture to standard drug therapy following an acute cerebral infarction increased the positive patient outcome rate by 11.77%. Upper limb acupoints A randomized clinical trial of 68 patients examined results in two groups. One group received standard drug therapy and the other group received standard drug therapy plus acupuncture. The drug therapy only group had a total effective rate of 70.59%. The group receiving drug therapy plus acupuncture had an 82.36% total effective rate. One of the more important results measured in the study was the recovery rate, defined as a disability rank of level 0 and the NHISS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale/Score) improvement rate of 91% 100%. The group receiving acupuncture plus drugs had a 29.41% recovery rate and the drugs only group had a 20.59% recovery rate. Another important result was the significantly effective rate, defined as a disability rank of level 1 3 and an NHISS improvement of 46% 90%. The acupuncture plus drugs group had a 38.24% … Continue reading

Charlie Gard: Lord Winston criticises ‘unhelpful and cruel interference’ from Vatican and Donald Trump – The Independent
Posted: Published on July 5th, 2017
Interference from the Vatican and Donald Trump in the case of Charlie Gard is extremely unhelpful and very cruel, Professor Robert Winston has said. His comments came after the US president and the Pope tweeted their support for the boy, who has been at the centre of a lengthy legal battle involving his parents and doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). The Vatican's paediatric hospital stepped in to offer care after Pope Francis called for Charlie's parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, to be allowed to accompany and treat their child until the end. But renowned scientist and genetics expert Lord Winston criticised attempts to transfer the 10-month-old from the central London hospital. I think, first of all, one has to accept the loss of a child is about the worst injury that any person can have and, secondly, I think the autonomy of parents is probably sacrosanct because a child can't give approval, can't give consent, he told ITV's Good Morning Britain. But having said that, these interferences from the Vatican and from Donald Trump seem to me to be extremely unhelpful and very cruel, actually, because this child has been dealt with at a hospital which has … Continue reading

CDT July 03, 2017 Victor Lindenberg Lewis participated in a study on Traumatic Brain Injury. Credit: KING SEATTLE - A first of its kind study published in JAMA Neurology is shining light on the complexity of war time brain injuries and why treating service members will require much more than a one size fits all band aid. A University of Washington neurologist followed 50 soldiers starting just after they suffered a concussive blast injury and tracked their conditions through brain imaging and other techniques over several years. Dr. Christine Mac Donald, associate professor of neurological surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine, said her findingsbring into question medical beliefs that individuals with TBI will stabilize within a year after their injury. Instead, Mac Donald found these service members' mental health symptoms evolved and even worsened five years later. "The takeaway for me that was so striking was the substantial number of service members who significantly declined in this population that was supposed to be the … Continue reading
