Posted: Published on May 26th, 2017
Mumbai:Ranveer Singh was injured on the head while shooting the climax of Padmavati here in Mumbai on 26 May, a source close to the actor said, adding that he sought medical aid and returned to shoot soon after. Ranveer Singh. Image from Instagram. The incident took place at the film's set here on Thursday, the source said. "Ranveer hurt himself on the head while shooting for the film during a particular take but he was so engrossed in the performance that he did not realise it till cut was called. It was only after he started bleeding profusely from the head after 'cut' was called, did everyone realise that he was hurt badly. "Ranveer received initial first aid on the set and was rushed immediately to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment. He completed the basic treatment and returned to the film's set to complete his portions of the shoot. Rather than let his injury slow him down or impact the shoot, Ranveer completed the day's work. He requires stitches on the head," added the source. The actor will be see as Alauddin Khilji in the period drama, which also features Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor. BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Three teams representing technology companies and a veterans organization will pilot their ideas to help veterans with traumatic brain injuries. The 2nd annual Brain Trust: Pathways to InnoVAtion summit culminated in a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Demo Day competition co-hosted by Optum at the companys Boston facility, where 15 teams presented their solutions before a live audience and expert panel of judges, which included veterans, caregivers and clinicians. The competing teams presented new services and technologies, ranging from a software treatment platform for traumatic brain injury to a virtual-reality device that helps veterans with behavioral health conditions. Three finalists were selected to test and pilot their ideas at the VA. Their ideas included technologies that use gesture- and voice-controlled assistance for the home or office, and a peer-to-peer approach for healing combat trauma and moral injury. More information on the winning teams is available at http://www.blogs.va.gov/VAntage/38161/vas-annual-brain-trust-summit-offers-platform-innovations-brain-health-head-trauma. There are unbelievable opportunities to accelerate innovation to help veterans with brain injuries live healthier lives through public-private partnerships like the VAs Brain Trust, said former Army Surgeon General and retired Army Lt. What Phineas Gage’s Injury Taught Us About Frontal Lobes – Lexology (registration)
Posted: Published on May 25th, 2017
In 1848, Phineas Gage, a 25 year old railroad worker, unwittingly became a benchmark of modern neuroscience. Gage was using a tamping iron to pack explosives when a spark ignited the explosive charge, propelling the iron rod through his cheek, behind his eye socket, then upwards through his brain, finally exiting the top of his skull, and landing some distance away. Gage survived, despite the fact that the tamping iron had destroyed much of his left frontal lobe. While it is reported that Gage never lost consciousness following the accident, his once even-tempered personality changed dramatically thereafter, as noted by John Martyn Harlow, the physician who treated him. Gages case became a text book example of how an injury to the brain can produce a change in personality. However, it was also reported that the personality change was temporary and that Gage was able to resume working and normal activity until his death in 1860, 12 years post-injury, as a result of a seizure. Gages case (as well as his skull which was donated to Dr. Harlow by his family) has been studied ever since his death. Most recently, in 2012, researchers combined CT scans of Gages skull with MRI … Continue reading

Veteran trauma treatment bill passes House, onto Senate – Santa Clarita Valley Signal
Posted: Published on May 24th, 2017
The House of Representatives were all for Rep. Steve Knights (R-Palmdale) No Hero Left Untreated Act when they vote unanimously in favor of it Tuesday. Under the legislation, known as H.R. 1162, veterans would be able to get treatment for post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma, chronic pain and opiate addiction. This is a great step forward in proving quality care to our veterans at a time when they need it most, Knight said in a statement. I look forward to working with my Senate counterparts to get this bill to the presidents desk. The No Hero Left Untreated Act would implement a pilot program through the Department of Veterans Affairs to use Magnetic eResonance Therapy (MeRT) for veterans. This therapy is a neurological treatment for mental trauma, which restores proper brain function by magnetic stimulation through a procedure that is not pharmaceutical or invasive, Knights office said. Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) said this therapy is a promising treatment. It is our duty to take care of every veteran suffering from the physical or invisible wounds of war, Roe said in a statement. According to Patriot Project Board Member Dr. Carol … Continue reading

USMC, Indiana, Texas and Oklahoma Making Hyperbaric Oxygen … – PR Web (press release)
Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2017
CONCUSSION/TBI are physical injuries Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 23, 2017 Camp Lejeune, US Marine Corps, with the cooperation of the US Navy, has agreed to allow active duty Marines to voluntarily participate in an LSU study in New Orleans (http://hbottbistudy.org/). Dr. Paul Harch is investigating the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) at 1.5 ATA in the treatment of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or persistent post-concussion syndrome (PPCS) resulting from either blunt or blast injury in both military and civilians. This action builds on the efforts of Rep Walter Jones (R-NC) and over a dozen other lawmakers demanding access to this safe and effective treatment. Hundreds of thousands of brain-wounded active duty and veteran service members are suffering without alternative treatments that can heal the wound to the brain, rather than merely treating symptoms with ineffective drugs and devices, dangerous opioid, and unproven and potentially dangerous drugs like LSD, ecstasy and other exotics. In a companion breakthrough, Indiana PL-217, signed 4/27/2017, establishes a funded Pilot Program for the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This legislation follows a long effort by veterans in Indiana to treat brain-wounded Indiana veterans with … Continue reading

Could a simple injection reduce stroke brain damage? – The West Australian
Posted: Published on May 22nd, 2017
Every ambulances could carry the injection to reduce brain damage in stroke patients. Picture: The West Australian Perth researchers believe a simple injection given on the spot to people having a stroke could reduce the chance of brain damage. Their study has found that an injection of a peptide compound containing the amino acid arginine could cut the risk of brain damage by up to 40 per cent. More than 60,000 Australians have a stroke each year but at present life-saving stroke treatment can only be done in hospital. Researchers from Notre Dame University and the Perron Institute believe the new drug treatment could be carried in every ambulance and given by paramedics. Lead researcher Diego Milani said the earlier that a stroke was treated, the better the chance of the patient surviving and not being left with permanent disability. The only available treatment for stroke currently is a drug called tPA, administered alone or in combination with a thrombectomy, when a small stent is inserted into a blood vessel to open up the flow of blood again. It can only be carried out in hospital . The research findings highlight the possibility that asimple injection of a new peptide, … Continue reading

Thousands of troops suffering from post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury and related conditions have been separated from the military for misconduct, the Government Accountability Office reported last week. In a recent four-year period, the GAO said, about 60,000 troops were separated despite being diagnosed with conditions that could cause the misconduct. More than 13,000 of them received less than honorable discharges, which meant they were no longer eligible for treatment from the Department of Veterans Affairs. While the Pentagon has objected to the study, saying it is flawed, those numbers are big enough to suggest that theres a serious deficiency in the ways our military services are screening and treating service members for these disorders. If we want a strong piece of anecdotal evidence, we need only look at the case of Army Staff Sgt. Joshua Eisenhauer, who is serving time on North Carolinas Central Prison for an incident that occurred in Fayetteville in 2012. Eisenhauer was sentenced to in 2015 to between 10 and 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to shooting at police and firefighters who were called to his Fayetteville apartment. None of the police or fire responders were shot, but Eisenhauer was badly wounded. Testimony … Continue reading

A first of its kind study is showing the devastating impacts of wartime brain injuries on service members. A UW Medicine neurologist followed 50 soldiers starting just after they suffered a concussive blast injury and tracked their conditions through brain imaging and other techniques over several years. Dr. Christine Mac Donald, associate professor of neurological surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine, said her findings bring into question medical beliefs that individuals will stabilize within a year after their injury. Instead, Mac Donald found these service members' mental health symptoms evolved and even worsened five years later. "The takeaway for me that was so striking was the substantial number of service members who significantly declined in this population that was supposed to be the mildest of the mild and that even with help that so few experienced sustained resolution," Mac Donald said. The findings pose a significant challenge for the Department of Veterans Affairs, which has struggled to treat or properly diagnose traumatic brain injuries in service members. Already, the VA estimates nearly … Continue reading

Cooling cure averts brain damage – Independent Online
Posted: Published on May 21st, 2017
Cooling the brains of newborn babies deprived of oxygen improves the proportion who survive unharmed, two decades of research has shown. Brain damage in babies asphyxiated at birth - often because their umbilical cords have become wound around their necks - leaves hundreds permanently disabled each year. A study of babies asphyxiated at birth in hospitals across the UK and Europe suggests that the cooling treatment could save at least 100 babies a year from brain damage. Of the 325 babies in the survey, half were cooled within six hours of delivery and their body temperatures were maintained at 3C to 4C below normal for three days. The results showed that almost half (44 percent) recovered with no brain damage, compared with just over a quarter (28 percent) among those left at normal temperature. Denis Azzopardi, of Imperial College, London, who led the research published in the New England Journal of Medicine, said: "Our study builds on a 20-year body of research but gives, for the first time, irrefutable proof that cooling can be effective in reducing brain damage after birth asphyxia. Unfortunately, it doesn't work in every case. "Birth asphyxia is a very important problem. Cases still occur and … Continue reading
