During Thursdays sentencing, Judge Smyth said similar incidents have resulted in one person dying and another charged with manslaughter. Lowry, from Bangor Road in Holywood, admitted causing grievous bodily harm to the other man as a result of the early morning incident on June 23, 2016. The 20-year-old was handed a combination order of 12 months probation and 80 hours community service after being told it was accepted his behaviour was totally out of character and that his remorse was geniune. Prior to passing sentence, Judge Smyth was informed the incident occurred after two groups of friends clashed in a nightclub on Dunbar Link. This initial altercation didnt involve … Continue reading

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017
TURKU, Finland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Every time a professional football player makes headlines because of a severe concussion sustained on the playing field, a researcher and neurobiologist Dr. Adrian Harel is reminded of the urgent need for more effective protocols to diagnose and treat traumatic brain injury (TBI). Dr. Harel and his team are intensely pursuing breakthrough rapid diagnostic test and treatments for TBI with a new class of drugs. What so many people fail to realize is that even if a player isnt thrown into a coma or vegetative state by the injury, TBI can have long-lasting effects that may ultimately end in tragedy. Dr. Harel says. Sports-related TBI among professional athletes is a serious problem. In the US alone, there are annually more than 300,000 cases where athletes are suffering from concussion and TBIs that result in loss of consciousness. The medical community is well aware of the importance of early intervention in all forms and degrees of TBI. We are simply seeing too many of our best athletes [ice-hockey, rugby, football, boxing ] permanently brain-damaged, says Dr. Harel, not to mention the millions of other cases of TBI sustained by people of all ages as a result of vehicle crashes, … Continue reading

Waco VA opens new facility to study brain injuries | City Of Waco … – Waco Tribune-Herald
Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017
Wacos Doris Miller Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center now can provide the gold standard in research and treatment for brain injuries suffered on the battlefield with Thursdays opening of a 53,000-square-foot facility for the VISN 17 Center of Excellence for Research on Returning War Veterans that sprawls across three floors of Building 93. More than 150 people attended a grand-opening ceremony to mark the occasion, and U.S. Rep. Bill Flores said the Waco VA will become a hub for dealing with the invisible wounds of post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury that have become part of this countrys global war on terror. McLennan County has become one of the most popular places for veterans to live or retire, and the Center of Excellence likely will mean more veterans locating here, Flores said. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs spent $9.8 million to renovate a building at the VA campus on Memorial Drive to create a one-stop destination for research on returning war veterans. We let the contract in 2011, and our target for completion was 2014, but we lost two years because the original contractor defaulted, an issue that tied up a couple of years, said Michael … Continue reading

Care of the Neck as Vital as Head in Injury Prevention – Scoop.co.nz (press release)
Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017
26th April 2017 Care of the Neck as Vital as Head in Sports Injury Prevention, Say NZ Chiropractors Research is increasingly showing that concussion injuries not only affect the brain but also the neck upon which the head moves during impact according to the New Zealand Chiropractors Association[1]. Dr Cassandra Fairest, chiropractor and spokesperson for the New Zealand Chiropractors Association explains: `Many people affected by concussion dont understand the neck and spine are also traumatised. They also dont realise the link between upper neck dysfunction as a possible cause of headaches and dizziness which often gets passed off as coming from the mild traumatic brain injury but responds well to chiropractic care1. `It is paramount the spine, and in particular the cervical spine and nervous system, are checked with any such injury to the head. We know that concussions occur in all contact sports with the highest incidence in rugby, soccer, hockey and basketball, and that youth athletes may have a more prolonged recovery and are more susceptible to a concussion accompanied by a catastrophic injury[2]. The greater number, severity and duration of symptoms after a concussion are predictors of a prolonged recovery. The uppermost part of the neck protects … Continue reading

His lawyers sued East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, for damages. John Whitting QC apologised on behalf of the trust, saying 'the care which he received was not of the standard he was entitled to expect and for this we are genuinely sorry'. The QC hoped the pay-out would 'at least provide some security to him' for the rest of his life. Approving the settlement, Judge Richard Pearce described it as being … Continue reading

Brain injury: ”Fighting’ has become my mission in life since my son Pdraig’s catastrophic accident’ – thejournal.ie

Reinhard Schaler Founder and CEO of the An Saol Foundation I AM WRITING here on behalf of the voiceless, the people lost in HSE statistics, plans, strategies and task forces. Those for whom the institutions continue to make decisions in their best interest. I am not neutral on this matter. German born, I have my own collective memory about the State taking control of what is best for sick people. I also have years of personal experience as the father of a catastrophic brain injury survivor. The truth is that the fight for life has become my mission in life since our son Pdraigs accident in 2013, when he was hit by a truck trying to overtake him with oncoming traffic, as he was cycling to work on Cape Cod. He was spending the summer there on a J1. Lack of staff and resources On September 2 2008, the Irish Times reported that the NRH got the green light for 235-bed facility with the new building to be completed by 2012. Fast forward 9 years to earlier this week, when the issue of bed closures in the existing National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH), and the fact that the new building was … Continue reading

Cerner adds concussion care platform to athlete management system – Healthcare IT News
Posted: Published on April 24th, 2017
Healthcare technology giant Cerner plans to integrate its HealtheAthlete technology with NeuroLogix Technologies C3Logix concussion management system. Nate Hogan, general manager of HealtheAthlete, defines the technology as a cloud-based sports medicine and athlete health management system that enables providers to document injury, rehabilitation, conditioning and health-related events. The information can be accessed from a computer or mobile device almost anywhere, anytime, he adds, and the system also provides built-in tracking and analysis tools. HealtheAthlete captures critical health data throughout the life of an injury, and our collaboration with C3Logix will help with the health and safety of athletes across high school, collegiate and professional settings, Hogan said in a statement. Nearly 4 million U.S. athletes suffer a concussion every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which claims that timely recognition and appropriate response is critical in treating a mild traumatic brain injury, and early diagnosis and management are key components. The C3Logix system, developed at Cleveland Clinic and commercialized by NeuroLogix Technologies, makes it possible for physicians, athletic trainers and other trained personnel to assess neurologic impairment. Athletes are given a series of tests at the beginning of the season to create a baseline. The same … Continue reading
