Heres what you should know along with some tips and treatments that may help What is Tinnitus? Tinnitus (pronounced tin-NIGHT-us or TIN-a-tus) is the sensation of hearing a ringing, buzzing, roaring, hissing or whistling sound in one or both ears when no external sound is present. The sounds, which can vary in pitch and loudness, are usually worse when background noise is low, so you may be more aware of it at night when youre trying to fall asleep in a quiet room. For most people tinnitus is merely annoying, but for many others it can be extremely disturbing. Tinnitus itself is not a disease, but rather a symptom of some other underlying health condition. Concussions: Causes, Prevention & Treatment – CBS Detroit

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2017

By Mario McKellop Concussions, also known as mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) are one of the most common types of sports-related injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 4 million sports or recreational activity-related concussions are reported in the United States ever year. Additionally, its been found that sports and recreational activities are responsible for 21 percent of MTBI among child athletes. The reason concussions have become prevalent in recent years is that their nature isnt commonly understood. Common Causes of Concussions Concussions are a disruption of the brains normal processes as the result of a head injury. They are most commonly caused by falls, but they are also often the result of a contact sports-related collision. It should be noted that an athlete can suffer a concussion as the result of a blow to the head even if they dont lose consciousness. It should also be noted that due to increasing participation in youth sports, children under the age of 14 account for 54 percent of sports and recreational activity-related concussions. Specifically, a study conducted by Hasbro Childrens Hospital found that ice hockey, football and soccer are the sports that cause the greatest number of … Continue reading

Neuroprotection of hyperbaric oxygen treatment for traumatic brain injury involving autophagy pathway in rats – Dove Medical Press

Back to Browse Journals Journal of Neurorestoratology Volume 5 Wen-Chao Liu, Liang Wen, Hao Wang, Jiang-Biao Gong, Tian-Xiang Zhan, Yuan-Yuan Meng, Xiao-Feng Yang Department of Neurosurgery, First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Peoples Republic of China Abstract: In the present study, we evaluated the changes in autophagy after hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and investigated whether autophagy takes part in the neuroprotection after HBO treatment. Male Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to four groups randomly: sham injury, sham injury and HBO, TBI, and TBI and HBO. The HBO rats received HBO treatment for 100 min immediately after injury. Rats were sacrificed at 24 h after the brain injury and the levels of cleaved caspase-3 and the number of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling-positive cells in the injured cortex were measured to determine cell death. The expression levels of autophagy-associated proteins were measured by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting to assess changes in autophagy. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling-positive cell density and cleaved caspase-3 expression were increased 24 h after TBI. These increases were suppressed by post-TBI HBO treatment. Immunohistochemistry and Western blotting of autophagy-associated proteins showed that TBI can … Continue reading

Judge adjourns application for DNR orders for brain-injured man – Irish Times

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

Because the brain-injured man has been made a ward of court, the president of the High Court, Mr Justice Peter Kelly, must decide whether the orders sought by the HSE are in his best interests. Photograph: Chris Maddaloni/Collins A father whose severely brain-injured son is at the centre of a case over whether doctors can opt not to resuscitate him if his condition deteriorates has said he wants his son to live and be kept alive. I want him to be kept alive. Where theres life, theres hope. In Deo confidimus [in God we trust], he added. When the time comes for him to leave this world, it should come naturally and with the full support a civil and caring society can offer. He wants his son to remain in a hospital high-dependency unit where he is getting excellent care and to get all necessary treatments to keep him alive. He was giving evidence in the continuing hearing of the Health Service Executives application for orders permitting doctors not to administer increased ventilatory, CPR or other treatments to the man, aged in his 30s, if his condition deteriorates. The parents oppose the orders. They have separate medical negligence proceedings against … Continue reading

Carolyn Hax: Traumatic brain injury threatens to break up family – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Posted: Published on April 7th, 2017

Carolyn Hax, Washington Post 9:17 p.m. CT April 5, 2017 Carolyn Hax(Photo: Washington Post) Adapted from a recent online discussion: Carolyn: About two years ago my husband was in a bad accident, no fault of his own, and while his physical injuries have mostly healed, he suffered a head injury and his personality has changed. He was once so even-keeled and sweet, and now he's volatile and moody. He's never been violent or abusive, but he sulks, withdraws, and snaps quickly. He'll give me and our two elementary-school-age kids the silent treatment over the most minor incidents. Heknows he's different and he's trying hard (with therapy) to get back to what he was, but honestly I don't know. One year I could take, but it's not good for the kids, we are all stressed, and he may never get back. Financially I could leave without a lot of problems. I don't want to leave my old husband, but I don't think I would have married this one. My kids miss their old father as well, but are so tentative around him now. I know it hurts him too; he doesn't want to be like this. I don't even know how … Continue reading

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash., April 6, 2017 Brain injuries don't happen in isolation. They're often accompanied by chronic pain or long-impacting injuries or behavioral health concerns like post-traumatic stress. And, whatever caused the injury -- an explosion, a vehicle accident or a fall -- also affects the rest of the person. These coexisting conditions can make patients more complex, and "are often very difficult to treat through our normal, conventional health care system," said Army Col. Beverly Scott, the medical and program director of Madigan Army Medical Center's Traumatic Brain Injury Program and Intrepid Spirit Program here. MIST Program Enter the Madigan Intrepid Spirit Transitions program, a six-week intensive outpatient group designed to address the complex conditions of eight to 12 service members at a time. "The priority goal is to help individuals so they can return to duty or improve their well-being for whatever path they are on . It's never too late to help them address a number of issues that they may be having following a traumatic brain injury, dealing with pain, dealing with behavior health issues," Scott said, emphasizing that the program goes beyond a TBI focus and also treats patients with other trauma-related conditions. The parents are opposing the HSEs application for orders giving doctors discretion not to administer various treatments, including CPR, if his condition deteriorates further. The President of the High Court, Mr Justice Peter Kelly, who described the case as of major importance, may visit the man in hospital. A senior doctor involved in the mans care said, in line with Medical Council guidelines, she discussed his situation on many occasions over years with his parents. Those discussions were often difficult and the parents did not agree the man was minimally conscious or did not … Continue reading
