FREDERICK, Md. - A new movie is shining a bright light on Americas returning soldiers and the struggles they have with traumatic brain injury even after their battles have come to an end. Since Americas war on terrorism began, more than 350,000 servicemen and women have come home with traumatic brain injury, or TBI. Many soldiers call TBI the silent killer, leading 22 vets to take their own lives every single day. For director Matthew J.C., thats 22 - too many. "Our mission was to take 5 traumatic brain injury and PTSD suffering veterans and find out if we can give them a brain spec scan then twelve weeks of sessions of in-light wellness and light therapy" says Matthew J.C., film director. According to J.C. and his team, that light therapy is gaining ground as a new, effective form of treatment against TBI. Former Jets legend Joe Namath estimates that he suffered five concussions in his career. Decades later, another Jets great, Curtis Martin, remembers one particularly devastating hit that had him so dazed that he walked into the wrong huddle. Islanders hero Bob Nystrom said he suffered six concussions, including one that had the newlywed briefly forgetting his wifes name. These New York sports legends and others gathered at NYIT-Old Westbury this week to bring attention to the massive scale of head injuries in sports as part of the annual Head Injury Awareness Celebrity Sports Forum organized by the Hauppauge-based Head Injury Association. The event, which coincided with Brain Injury Awareness Month, drew a large crowd that included high school coaches and various professionals. Namath and his fellow athletes were part of a panel using their celebrity status to highlight the need for more research and education on concussions. Experts were also on hand to discuss new treatment options, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, also known as HBOT, which is commonly associated with healing wounds. Brain Injury Conference 3.JPG The eleventh annual Nebraska Brain Injury Conference is underway at the Younes Conference Center in Kearney. The two day conference is presented by the Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska. It is featuring about 20 sessions, each one focusing on different aspects of brain injuries, treatment and rehabilitation. There is about 200 attendants ranging from medical professionals and caregivers to survivors. "My injury was 29 years ago, it was in Omaha," said Dale Johannes. He was a junior in high school when he was in a serious car crash. "In the accident I was broke 17 ribs, I punctured both my lungs, I shattered my jaw, I cracked my pelvis," said Johannes. "But, the worst thing that happened to me was the fact that I had the head injury." This brain injury left him temporarily mute. "Because of the head injury I couldn't speak for six weeks and when I could speak again I had the maturity level of a second grader," said Johannes. "I was seventeen at the time. Since Fort Campbells Intrepid Spirit Center opened more than two years ago, it has allowed staff to take a multidisciplinary approach to treating traumatic brain injuries and associated conditions. The center consolidates many different specialties under one roof to optimize the efficiency of the treatment offered to patients. Elsewhere, the National Intrepid Center of Excellence close to Washington, other similar centers such as the one at Fort Hood, along with centers operated by the Navy and Marine Corps all have the same treatment philosophy as Fort Campbells Intrepid Spirit Center. The Intrepid Spirit Center is using the heightened awareness about brain injuries during the Brain Injury Awareness Month observances in March to increase education about TBI on Fort Campbell. The monthlong observance is sponsored by the Brain Injury Association of America and supported by the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center. March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. A fundraiser is planned for Sunday at Twiggs Martini Bar in Bridgeport Brain injuries are complicated. There are no simple measures of treatment, and the injuries can create lasting challenges for people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their families. March is Brain Injury Awareness month and Faith and Had Walmer of Lake Oswego want to share information about brain injuries with the community. "Brain injuries are some of the least understood," Faith said. "It's an 'invisible disability.'" Had Walmer has a brain injury, the result of an auto accident he experienced in 1977. "I was in college and wasn't wearing a seat belt," he said. "I was in a coma for a week." His brain trauma continues, and he and Faith have developed support groups to deal with living with a brain injury. Had says meditation helps a great deal; he even teaches meditation to others with brain injuries. "It helps me find a place and peace where I can come from and return to," he said.
