Brain Injury Awareness Day – KSNT News
Posted: Published on March 22nd, 2017
TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) Members from the Brain Injury Association of Kansas are making their way to the Statehouse to get lawmakers to understand the seriousness of traumatic brain injuries in Kansas. Millions live with a traumatic brain injury which costs Americans more than $70 billion for treatment and care. The goal of the gathering at the Capitol is to get lawmakers to support a Senate bill which would make places that have state Medicaid services to provide assistance at homes and in the community. Dr.Kennen Thompson at St. Francis Hospital said this illness can affect anyone at any age. Unfortunately it happens with children at playgrounds, Thompson said. They happen with kids at high schools. They happen when youre outside walking your dog and you trip on the sidewalk. Its a sort of an injury that can actually happen unfortunately to any person and at any time. The Brain Injury Association of Kansas is sponsoring a Brain Injury Awareness Day and a pie rally at the statehouse from 10:00 to 2:00 on March 22, 2017 where everyone is welcome to come and show support. Please enable Javascript to watch this video A brain injury can impact all aspects of a persons life including mobility, thinking skills, life skills, personality, eating and talking, and can affect a person of any age, race, gender, and socioeconomic status. When it comes to brain injuries, the sooner you begin rehabilitation, the better the outcome may be. Cone Health has several different venues of rehabilitation to help patients at different stages of recovery. The rehab process starts in the acute phase of injury and can continue to intensive inpatient rehab, skilled nursing facilities and outpatient locations. Sometimes, a brain injury can be overlooked when there are multiple other injuries, but without treatment, they can have just as long-lasting and disabling effects on your life. If you are concerned that you may have experienced a brain injury, its important to follow up with your physician. Symptoms of a brain injury can include headache, dizziness, changes in behavior or sleep. If you are experiencing any of these things, its important to discuss your symptoms with your provider. The recovery process can vary based on the severity of the brain injury, and patients can experience some life-long impacts from significant trauma and … Continue reading

Deadly spider venom could stop stroke brain damage, doctors say – The Independent
Posted: Published on March 21st, 2017
Venom from the deadliest spider in Australia could hold the key to creating the world'sfirsttreatment for brain damage caused by astroke. A protein found in the toxic venom of the funnel web spider was found to help preventdamage to brain cells after stroke in lab rats, said scientists. Researchers from the University of Queensland and Monash University captured three funnel web spiders, whose bite can kill humans in 15 minutes, for a study. They used pipettes to 'milk' the spiders for their venom which theyanalysed, spotting a protein called Hi1a as it resembled two copies of another chemical that can protect brain cells. The scientists recreated the protein and injected it into rats. They found it blocked ion channels in the brain which are sensitive to acid and play an important role in brain damage after strokes. In the study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they described Hi1a as "highly neuroprotective" inmodels of what happens when someone suffers a stroke caused by a blood clot. Brain Injury Providers Alliance Calls on Texas Legislature to Prevent Immediate Gap in Services – PR Web (press release)
Posted: Published on March 21st, 2017
The long-term success of the CRS program is widely praised for its quality clinical outcomes as well as a significant financial return on investment to the state of Texas, commented Eric Makowski, VP of Advocacy Affairs at Mentis Neuro Health. Austin, Texas (PRWEB) March 21, 2017 A Texas Criminal Court of Appeals decision stunned brain injury advocates when it ruled last week that a State of Texas dedicated fund, which provides medically-necessary services to Texans with brain and spinal cord injuries, is unconstitutional. The Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services (CRS) program is administered by the Health & Human Services Commission, and benefits all Texans impacted by brain injury including crime victims and veterans. The Court agreed with the appellant, Orlando Salinas, finding the dedicated fund directing revenue to the CRS program from misdemeanor and felony court costs to be an unlawful tax, and therefore unconstitutional. In a ruling on Wednesday, March 8, the Court ordered districts to stop collections for CRS and one other that offers counseling to abused children within 40 days. This loss of funding is an immediate threat to the CRS program and may result in the end of a program serving more than 1,000 brain injured patients each … Continue reading

Alex Barbosa (front) suffered a traumatic brain injury in a motorcycle crash near SDSU in October 2016. Family and friends of a San Diego college student whosuffered a traumatic brain injury walked around Mission Bay Saturday in honor of their loved one. In October 2016,Alex Barbosa, a San Diego State University (SDSU) student, lost control of his motorcycle just west of campus on Montezuma Road, sliding across the ground before striking a sign post, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) said. Alex was severely injured in the crash. Doctors had to amputate one of his legs; he also suffered a traumatic brain injury, for which he is currently being treated at CareMeridian in La Mesa. When Alex's family found out staff members from CareMeridian participate in an annual walk to raise awareness for those with brain injuries, they immediately signed up to help and raise money. The 10th annual Survive Headstrong Walk For Recovery benefits the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation, which raises money to help survivors and their families. The event took place Saturday in Mission Beach, where more than 1,500 people showed up, including dozens of survivors. Alex wasnt able to attend, but his parents -- Andrea and … Continue reading

Which kids will take longer to recover from brain injury … – Science Daily
Posted: Published on March 18th, 2017
A new biomarker may help predict which children will take longer to recover from a traumatic brain injury (TBI), according to a preliminary study published in the March 15, 2017, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. "Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of disability in children, but it's very difficult to predict long-term outcome and which kids might need more aggressive treatment," said study author Emily L. Dennis, PhD, of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. "While the severity of the injury certainly plays a role in this, there's still a lot of uncertainty -- you frequently have two patients with similar injuries who have different recoveries." The study involved 21 children ages eight to 18 who were in a pediatric intensive care unit at one of four hospitals in Los Angeles County with a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. Causes of the injuries included falls from skateboards, scooters and bikes, motor vehicle-pedestrian accidents and motor vehicle accidents with children as passengers. The children were compared to 20 children of the same age who had not had a brain injury. All of the participants had brain scans with special … Continue reading

Patients, researchers share information about concussion injuries, treatment – The Columbus Dispatch
Posted: Published on March 17th, 2017
JoAnne Viviano The Columbus Dispatch @JoAnneViviano Rosemarie Bauer used to work nine hours a day at her online jewelry business. Today, she manages only about three hours a week. Everything changed in October, when the 62-year-old suffered a brain injury after being hit from behind by an SUV while walking her dog in her New Albany neighborhood. "I am still on my journey back," she said. "I still have sensitivity to light and sound, my sense of taste is not good. I still have occasional dizziness, I sometimes have unprovoked crying and sadness, I cannot drive. I sometimes question myself." Bauer shared her story this week at the Ohio Concussion Summit, which was sponsored by the OhioHealth Rehabilitation Hospital and the Brian Injury Association of Ohio. The event, held at the Fawcett Center at Ohio State University, was attended by nurses, social workers, physical, occupational and speech therapists and others. John Corrigan, director of the Ohio Brian Injury Program, said 100,000 Ohioans suffer traumatic brain injuries each year and that 1.8 million adults in the state have had at least one traumatic brain injury causing unconsciousness. As many as 750,000, he said, are at risk of disability. At the summit, … Continue reading

Diagnostic approach for veterans suffering hearing impairment and … – Medical Xpress
Posted: Published on March 17th, 2017
March 17, 2017 by Emil Venere This graphic details the effects of a blast shock wave. Credit: ProPublica, Al Granberg New research findings suggest mild blast trauma suffered by military personnel affects portions of the auditory system that have not been extensively studied after injuries occur, and this impairment might be diagnosed using well-established testing methods. "Advances in military protective equipment have increased the survival rate of personnel exposed to blasts, permitting exposure to higher intensity shock waves," said Riyi Shi (pronounced Ree Shee), a professor of neuroscience and biomedical engineering in Purdue University's Department of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine and Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. "Due to increased blast survivability, new organ systems have emerged as vulnerable to blast trauma, particularly the brain and auditory system. The vast majority of victims suffer what we refer to as mild blast injury, which is asymptomatic and difficult to detect, yet can produce lasting hearing impairment and may be associated with additional damage to the brain." For U.S. military veterans with service-connected disabilities, the two most prevalent conditions are tinnitus, or ringing in the ear, and hearing loss. Researchers are using various tests based on the electrophysiology of the … Continue reading
