INTRODUCTION More than 225,000 cardiac surgeries are performed annually in the United States (1). While these procedures provide life-saving corrections of coronary blood flow or valvular abnormalities, the inherent combination of surgical trauma, extracorporeal perfusion, and ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury often evoke harmful systemic inflammatory responses (2). These inflammatory responses prominently manifest as acute loss of vascular tone (approximately 25% of patients) (3) but are also linked to an ongoing, high incidence of end-organ damage such as acute kidney injury [up to 54% for all stages (4)].
