Topping the list of findings were a new blood test that can accurately predict heart attacks, a new cholesterol drug with fewer side effects, and an old drug that has been repurposed to treat inflammation of the sac around the heart. All of these are exciting results, said Dr. Bereliani, a board-certified Beverly Hills cardiologist. When patients come to the emergency room with symptoms of a potential heart attack, this new test will make it faster and easier for doctors to determine if they are truly in danger. Almost 720,000 Americans suffer from a heart attack each year. While current technology takes around six hours to determine whether or not a patient is in danger, this new blood test would substantially speed up the process. Back in January, Czech Health Minister Martin Holct addressed WHO in a letter stressing that research by Czech cardiologists had allowed thousands of acute heart attack sufferers worldwide to benefit from advanced treatment methods. Members of the Society of Cardiology, including its chairman, Milo Tborsk, met in the Czech capital on Friday. The WHO presented the annual prize a week ago to CKS secretary Jaromr Hradec.
