NZ-First Procedure a Success at Waikato

Posted: Published on May 22nd, 2014

NZ-First Procedure a Success at Waikato Waikato Hospitals Cardiology team have successfully performed a New Zealand-first hybrid coronary revascularisation on a 54-year-old Tokoroa man. Michael Lucas is the first New Zealand patient to undergo this procedure in Waikato Hospitals new purpose built hybrid cardiology theatre part of Waikato District Health Boards $500m building programme. Hybrid coronary revascularisation is an internationally emerging procedure and an alternative to traditional coronary bypass surgery, which merges bypass surgery (creating new routes for blood flow when one or more arteries in the heart become blocked) and angioplasty (opening blocked arteries by inflating a tiny balloon and insertion of stents) during the same operation. Waikato DHB Cardiology clinical director Adam El Gamel performed the bypass surgery, while Waikato DHB interventional cardiologist Madhav Menon performed the angioplasty. If for anatomical reasons we arent able to perform a full bypass, for example, if the patient doesnt have enough healthy blood vessels in the body for us to use, we would only be able to do half the job, which can leave the patient very unwell and struggling, because you have left half of the heart struggling, Mr El Gamel explains. This was the case for Mr Lucas who … Continue reading

Cardiovascular diseases rise during Greek financial crisis

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2014

Hospital admissions for cardiovascular diseases increased during the Greek financial crisis, according to two studies from Athens. The research was presented today at the Heart Failure Congress 2014, held 17-20 May in Athens, Greece. The Congress is the main annual meeting of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology. Dr Alexios Samentzas said: Greece plunged into an economic crisis in 2008 and since then there have been rises in unemployment, wage reductions and a fall in standard of living. Previous studies have shown that cardiovascular disease is more frequent during crises such as wars and natural disasters. Dr Dimitra Papadimitriou said: We noticed an increased incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart attack in younger patients in the emergency room during the Greek financial crisis. Therefore, we decided to investigate whether there had been a real increase in cardiovascular diseases during the crisis. The researchers retrospectively analyzed all admissions to the cardiology department of Elpis General Hospital in Athens during two time periods. The first time period, 2003 to 2007, was defined as the pre-crisis period, while 2008 to 2012 was the crisis period. Dr Samentzas said: We chose 2008 as the start of the crisis because … Continue reading

Societies publish recommendations to guide minimally invasive valve therapy programs for patients

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 14-May-2014 Contact: Kathy Boyd David kbdavid@scai.org 717-422-1181 American College of Cardiology WASHINGTON, D.C., BEVERLY, MA, and CHICAGO (May 15, 2014) As minimally invasive therapies are increasingly used to treat diseased heart valves, newly published recommendations provide guidance on best practices for providing optimal care for patients. The document released today offers first-time guidance from four professional medical associations on developing and maintaining a transcatheter mitral valve therapy program, emphasizing collaboration between interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. The document is an important step toward achieving consistent, effective care, particularly as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) prepare to issue a national coverage decision for transcatheter valve repair and replacement procedures. The consensus paper, by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), American College of Cardiology (ACC) and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), outlines criteria for healthcare providers and institutions to offer consistent and appropriate care to patients in the new and rapidly developing field of transcatheter valve therapy. The treatment uses a catheter to place a clip on the mitral valve to reduce the leakage, offering the only alternative treatment option to open heart surgery. The minimally invasive … Continue reading

Research Shows Hope for Normal Heart Function in Children with Fatal Heart Disease

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise After two decades of arduous research, a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded investigator at the Childrens Hospital of Michigan (CHM) at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) and the Wayne State University School of Medicine has published a new study showing that many children with an often fatal type of heart disease can recover normal size and function of damaged sections of their hearts. The finding by Childrens Hospital of Michigans Pediatrician-in-Chief and Wayne State University Chair of Pediatrics Steven E. Lipshultz, M.D., F.A.A.P., F.A.H.A., clearly demonstrates that nearly one-fourth of children treated for idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM (also known as congestive cardiomyopathy, when these children with DCM become symptomatic by developing congestive heart failure) can be expected to fully recover normal size and function of left-ventricular (LV) heart muscle fibers within about two years of diagnosis. (LV muscle chamber size is dilated and LV function is reduced and weakened; these two abnormalities are the findings of DCM in children.) The breakthrough from Dr. Lipshultz team of pediatric cardiology researchers, published in the April 15 issue of the authoritative Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), also represents a major step … Continue reading
