‘PediaSuit’ helps cerebral palsy patient walk
Posted: Published on March 9th, 2012
Posted on March 9, 2012, Friday NEW HOPE: Liana is able to stand up and walk with the PediaSuit. KUCHING: Liana is a 5-year-old Iban girl who cannot walk due to cerebral palsy (CP). A new hope came to her last year when she became the first child in Sarawak to own a PediaSuit, thanks to the generous support of a local school. The PediaSuit is a padded suit overlaid with connecting rubber pulleys which create a virtual framework to stabilise her trunk and lower limbs, correct her posture and develop her balance. She wears her PediaSuit for at least an hour every day, during both conventional physiotherapy and Spider Therapy, a new treatment for CP and other neurological disorders. In Spider Therapy, bungee cords are attached to a belt which she wears to hold her body up in correct alignment. Once she is positioned, she is able to move through her therapy exercises without painful stress on her joints, whilst her therapist has both hands free to facilitate her correct movement patterns. This Saturday from 3.30pm to 5pm, Liana will assist in the live demonstration of both PediaSuit and Spider Therapy at The Therapy Playroom, first floor, No. 89, … Continue reading

Theres much excitement in the scientific world over three Ontario Brain Institute projects expected to make new discoveries in treating autism, epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Were going after the brass ring, explains Dr. Peter Szatmari about the significance of the research to be done. Szatmari is director of the Offord Centre for Child Studies in Hamilton, head of psychiatry at McMaster Childrens Hospital and a McMaster University psychiatry and behavioural neuroscience professor. He is also one of five lead researchers in the Institutes project on finding better treatments for neurodevelopment disorders. Szatmari said he wont use the word cure, but he does expect great things, and at the very least, vast improvements to be found in treating children suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorders and others disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Obsessive Compulsive. Were now at the stage where we think we can make significant advancements in treatment, said Szatmari, who has studied autism disorders for 30 years. Ive been in this game a long time, so Im excited to work with not only McMaster researchers but new colleagues and scientists from across Ontario. Its a novel approach of everyone working together for the common goal of reducing the … Continue reading

Birth Injuries from Medical Malpractice Can Create a Lifetime of Financial and Emotional Challenges for Victims and …
Posted: Published on March 7th, 2012
The Law Offices of Dr. Bruce G. Fagel & Associates understands that a birth injury can be one of the most devastating events that can happen to a family. Brain injuries are the most serious type of birth injuries. Sometimes these injuries occur not by nature, but as a result of medical negligence. A lack of communication between doctors and nurses, failure to properly monitor a fetal heart rate monitor, or failing to perform a C-Section when necessary, could result in brain damage or Cerebral palsy. Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) March 06, 2012 What most people fail to understand with a severe birth injury is how much the medical costs will be for a family to care for their child. If their child has cerebral palsy for example, this can cost upwards of millions of dollars for the proper care and treatment, states Bruce Fagel. Dr. Fagel has seen the costs of caring for severely injured children rise dramatically during the past decade. Medical malpractice and birth injuries can occur from lack of blood flow or oxygen to the brain, trauma, or infection. Hospitals use a fetal heart rate monitor, which monitors the condition of the babys heart rate during … Continue reading

R5.5m claim after baby born with cerebral palsy
Posted: Published on March 6th, 2012
The mother of a five-year-old boy born with cerebral palsy, allegedly because of the negligence of the clinic where her son was delivered, is claiming more than R5.5 million from the Alexandra Health Centre and University Clinic and Gauteng health MEC. Lerato Leba, an unemployed mother from Alexandra, blames her sons condition entirely on the staff at the health centre. She said they made her give birth naturally to Koketso in October 13, leaving her as she endured 17 hours of agonising labour, instead of giving her a Caesarean. She appealed to the nursing staff to transfer her to the Johannesburg General Hospital, but her pleas fell on deaf ears, according to papers before the Pretoria High Court. Her son suffered brain damage during the birth. The health clinic is a welfare organisation that falls under the auspices of the Gauteng health MEC. Leba went to the clinic during her pregnancy, where she was monitored. She was admitted to the clinic on October 11, 2006 with lower abdominal pain, but was discharged that evening after a brief physical examination by a member of the nursing staff. The nurse concluded that Leba was not in labour and so did not have … Continue reading

By Julian Gavaghan Last updated at 1:20 PM on 5th March 2012 Jailed: Neil Jackson told colleagues that he had cancer and that his son suffered from cerebral palsy A Tesco store manager conned more than 60,000 out of colleagues by pretending both he and his baby son had fatal illnesses - and blew the cash on holidays in Las Vegas and Hawaii. Neil Jackson, 30, tricked kind-hearted workmates for three years by claiming he had cancer which needed private treatment and that his son Zac, two, had cerebral palsy. Supermarket workers handed him cheques and bundles of cash to pay for treatment. But a court heard the only thing wrong with Jackson was an injured foot from playing football. Zac was also a healthy child - with no sign of a brain disorder. Instead, heavy gambler Jackson was in debt and used some of the money to pay for a holiday in Las Vegas and another in Hawaii. While in Las Vegas, he had the cheek to text his victims claiming he was at the bedside of Zac undergoing treatment in a Newcastle-on-Tyne hospital. Jackson wept as he was today jailed for six years for what the judge described … Continue reading

Conman Neil Jackson jailed for six years after false sickness claims for son
Posted: Published on March 4th, 2012
A CONMAN who lied about having cancer and falsely claimed his son suffered from cerebral palsy to swindle thousands of pounds from his workmates was jailed for six years yesterday. Neil Jackson, 30, of Mathias Close, Penylan, Cardiff, conned 56,285 from four work colleagues through three years of lying about the health of himself and his son. Among his most outrageous lies, Jackson claimed he was by his sick sons hospital bedside while he was in fact on holiday with his family in Las Vegas. Jackson conned two women at a Tesco store where he worked after claiming he had cancer and needed money for medical treatment. And he also committed fraud against two other colleagues at a sports store by telling them that his son was seriously ill and urgently needed medical help. Jackson supported his lies by creating text messages from an imaginary nurse called Claire and arranging to meet one of his victims outside University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, the court heard. Delivering his sentence at Newport Crown Court yesterday, Judge David Morris said: Everyone needs to know that those who prey on the public in such as well-organised and manipulative way as you did will lose … Continue reading
