Posted: Published on March 4th, 2012
Vicky with Owen, left, and Aiden, who is now starting to realise his limitations Parents of a 2-year-old boy with cerebral palsy show no letting up in their bid to raise 40,000 for a life-changing operation in America. Vicky Thompson, 31, and partner Gareth Thomas, 26, hope a spinal operation will allow Aiden, who has a form of cerebral palsy called bilateral spastic hemiplegia, to grow up together with his identical twin Owen. Now Aiden is 2 his mum and dad are hoping he will be able to go to St Louis Childrens Hospital in Missouri for a procedure which involves cutting the bad nerves in the spine to enable him to walk independently. Vicky and Gareth have already managed to raise 26,700 with the support of family, friends and local organisations in Cambridgeshire. Now they are holding two more fundraisers a buffet and dance at Taste of China restaurant in Birdbrook tonight and a 5km buggy walk in Cambridge next Saturday. Vicky of Sperling Drive, Haverhill, said: Its getting harder the older the boys get because Aiden is more aware of what he is not able to do and what his brother can do. Its heartbreaking as Aiden is … Continue reading

This experienced team of educators, clinicians, researchers and engineers work to provide education, products and rehabilitation solutions for adult and pediatric populations with motor control-related disabilities. They design and manufacture the LiteGait collection of products, used in treating stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, head injury, amputation, orthopedic problems, arthritis, balance issues and chronic pain. Elberton, GA (PRWEB) March 02, 2012 The LiteGait mobility frames are mutually beneficial for rehabilitation facilities, therapists and patients. Facilities can increase efficiency and revenue by growing the number of patients receiving gait therapy, by reducing the risk of back injuries to staff and the risk of falls to patients, and by offering therapy to patients not previously eligible for gait therapy due to the complexity or severity of their conditions or cognitive levels. Therapists can provide more efficient treatment, without the risk of injury to themselves or their patients, and more properly and effectively facilitate a wide variety of gait, balance and alignment therapies. And patients can experience a sense of accomplishment with this supported suspension, learning to walk in an environment free from falls. The LiteGait allows the patient to begin training earlier in the rehabilitation process, and at a lower … Continue reading

Charity golfers to the fore 7:10pm Tuesday 28th February 2012 in News SCORES of golfers helped raise thousands of pounds for a cancer charity. For the past 11 years, Danny and Theresa Dyer have hosted a charity golf day to raise cash for causes that have supported their daughter Victoria who has cerebral palsy. So far the family has raised 36,200 for charities including East Oxford hospice Helen & Douglas House, respite nursing charity Rosy, the John Radcliffe Hospitals special care baby unit, and Bicester special needs school Bardwell. The family said 3,200 raised at the golf day last September, will go to Macmillan Cancer Support in the name of family friend Tad Williams. Mr Williams, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, has turned out for every golf day the family has organised, donating a major raffle prize each year. So this year he was given the honour of choosing the charity that would benefit. Mrs Dyer, 48, of Somerville Drive, Bicester, said: Tad was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and has been having treatment. He has had support from Macmillan and because we knew he was unwell we asked him to nominate the charity. Follow this link: Charity … Continue reading

28 February 2012 Last updated at 13:36 ET A specialist operation which could help children with cerebral palsy to walk unaided is to be performed at Leeds General Infirmary. Consultant paediatric neurosurgeon John Goodden studied the technique in the United States with an American surgeon who developed the procedure in 1991. Most families have had to raise the money to go to the US for the surgery. Mr Goodden said it was "tremendous" he had been given permission from trust managers to carry out the operation. The micro-neurosurgery, called selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR), involves identifying and cutting the spinal nerves causing stiffness and pain. Continue reading the main story “Start Quote Being told at six or seven years old that you're going to need a wheelchair for the future is heartbreaking” End Quote Consultant paediatric neurosurgeon John Goodden The decision to fund the £24,000 operation and aftercare is made by each patient's local primary care trust. Thanks for allowing rape victim find a voice I would like to convey my thanks to STAR Ananda for providing a solid platform to the Park Street rape victim to air her torment and gather enough courage to defend her stand despite her efforts being repeatedly brushed off as a ?conspiracy to malign the government?. The initiative of the channel may have woken the confused administration out of its slumber to launch a belated damage-control measure, allowing its police force a free hand to live up to its abilities and skills. The case has been cracked with speed under the aegis of a determined leadership, proving once again that politics has a lot to do with people?s gradual loss of faith in the police. People of Bengal were truly in a dilemma in the absence of a suitable alternative to the Left Front, considering the air of unpredictability surrounding the prospective chief minister. Anti-establishment furore and disenchantment, coupled with her honest and persistent endeavour, however, have paved the way for one-person governance, replacing the party-centric model. But, even after ascending the coveted throne, our chief minister has failed to shed her image of a street fighter, either crying conspiracy at … Continue reading

He will celebrate his April 1 birthday in the US, and will spend a month undergoing therapies not available in Australia. Parents Dawn and Cameron have fundraised and saved $17,000 of the $20,000 necessary to pay for the trip and therapies, and launched a Facebook auction to raise the remaining funds. "The support we got after the story we had in the QT last year was amazing, and we've had Xact Radiology and a couple of other businesses help out with the fundraising, and I've hosted auctions and sold Christmas decorations on Facebook," Dawn Mackenzie-Wyatt said. Ms Mackenzie-Wyatt is currently tallying the money raised by the auction, which featured 52 items donated from local and Queensland businesses. Barrow family’s appeal to improve care for disabled Jack, 3
Posted: Published on February 20th, 2012
Last updated at 15:38, Monday, 20 February 2012 A FAMILY has launched an appeal to help fund specialist treatment for a severely disabled toddler – and help other children with brain injuries or conditions in South Cumbria. Title Author Copyright Description The parents of three-year-old Jack Bennett are trying to raise cash to continue a course of care which could dramatically improve the youngster’s quality of life, and offer services to others. Jack, of Gleaston Avenue, Barrow, was just one when he was diagnosed with a severe form of cerebral palsy, which affects his movement, co-ordination and development. For first-time mum Joanne Bennett, 36, the news came as a huge shock. She was warned that her son would have to use a wheelchair and he may never be able to communicate with her properly. Doctors at Furness General Hospital began a course of treatment including speech and language therapy and physiotherapy, but there were limitations to the level of care medics could provide. Weeks before his second birthday, the tot went on a hospital-arranged visit to Bobath Centre in London, which specialises in the treatment of cerebral palsy in children. But after Jack suffered a seizure during the journey and … Continue reading
