Cerebral palsy didn’t hinder this remarkable graduate – Florida Times-Union

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2017

Looking at the smoothly blended smoky shadow on Victoria Aparicios eyelids, no one would ever know her mother once applied all her makeup. Looking at her flawless red lipstick, no one would ever know Victoria once struggled to use her own hands. Born four months premature, she wasnt expected to survive and if she did, doctors said Victoria would most likely suffer crippling disabilities. They werent sure sure how much damage her brain sustained, nor did they know how severe her cerebral palsy would be. Just last month, Victoria, 18, graduated with honors from St. Joseph Academy in St. Augustine and dreams of becoming a makeup artist. So, shes a miracle, said Cynthia Aparicio, her mother. [Her graduation] is bittersweet, and probably every parent says that, but especially because of Victorias journey. Ive had to be there so much. Its amazing to see, but its going to be really hard to let go. Her mother and her father, Victor, wont have to let go just yet. Victoria plans to attend Daytona State College for business, and the college has a branch in Victorias hometown. The degree, she said, will help her create a business and brand in makeup artistry, but … Continue reading

BioEden – Autistic Children’s Early Success Stories From Tooth Stem Cells – PR Newswire (press release)

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2017

- More and more people retrieve their banked cells and benefit from clinical treatments Twenty individuals, ranging from the ages of 2 to 43, have become the first to use stem cells from their teeth in the treatment of various conditions including cerebral palsy, diabetes, cleft lip, and autism. The cells in use are dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) - the richest source of MSCs in the body - extracted from the likes of exfoliated incisors, deciduous or baby, and wisdom teeth. All patients report no adverse reactions, with several experiencing huge improvements in their conditions. To date, all treatments worked as well if not better than traditional treatments, but by far the most promising results are being seen in children with autism. A complex behavioural disorder that affects 1 in every 100 people in the UK, autism is one of the biggest challenges that faces modern medicine today. Not only do symptoms manifest differently in each patient, but there is no one definitive cause. To treat an individual requires a tailored combination of therapies and medications - often meaning years of harsh drugs and hours of intensive behavioural therapy. Many experts believe stem cell therapy can change that, or … Continue reading

Australia’s First Major Domestic Crop is Coming – Marijuana.com

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2017

The first company in Australia to receive a cannabiscultivation license has been given the official go-ahead to start growing the countrys first major domestic crop of medicine. Cann Group Australia was granted a permit by the Office of Drug Control in February to grow medical marijuana at an undisclosed location in Melbourne. The company has been on a high for a few months since being issued the official papers, as well as listing on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) earlier this month. The ASX listing came after Cann Group successfully raised $13.5 million in capital. Much of that investment came from Canadian marijuana giant Aurora Cannabis who acquired a 19.9 percent stake in the burgeoning Australian cultivator. The first Australian buds are expected to be ready this August to the benefit of Aussie patients. The permits allow this pioneering producer to breed plants for propagation, supply them for manufacturing into medical products, and conduct research to develop extracts. Patients will be able to access the medicine by either getting involved in clinical trials or by obtaining it through prescription using Australias Therapeutic Goods Administration. Cann Group is currently building a larger facility, also in Melbourne, which is expected to be … Continue reading

The woman who sparked a cross-border search when she took her son from a Brisbane hospital, has defended her child's low weight. Video: Cini Walker via Facebook Chase Walker is now showing improvement, his parents say. Picture: Facebook. A DESPERATE couple accused of snatching their severely disabled four-year-old son from a Queensland Hospital last month are living in a controversial church, where the youngster is being given cannabis oil by a deregistered doctor. Cini Walker and Marc Steven made national headlines when they were accused of taking little Chase Walker from hospital where he was being treated for spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Ms Walker and Mr Steven stopped vaccinating their son after the age of two, believing the injections were causing him seizures. The parents advocate the use of medicinal marijuana and an organic diet, which they say has vastly improved his condition and reduced his epileptic seizures. However, Chase has continually been admitted to hospital, with doctors often citing malnutrition. Ms Walker claims the hospital food and western medicine has had an adverse impact on her sons health. The parents told the Seven Networks Sunday Night they recently began living at Newcastles Church of Ubuntu, where they had been … Continue reading

Stem Cells: The Miraculous Blood In Your Baby’s Umbilical Cord – HuffPost UK

Posted: Published on May 26th, 2017

My husband and I were at a Baby Show recently and walked past a stem cell storage bank display on our way to the popular pram and cot displays. At the time, we didn't really stop to think about it, however we did make a mental note to have a look into stem cells later on as we weren't too sure what storing stem cells actually entailed or the process involved. I already understood the amazing properties found in the placenta and umbilical cord with many mums choosing to freeze dry and consume it for its therapeutic properties. After some research, I discovered that I could go one colossal step further and use the blood in my baby's umbilical cord to treat my child in future should they become unexpectedly ill. Image courtesy of Smart Cells So why doesn't everyone do it? Well there are many myths surrounding collection, how the cord blood and tissue is stored and the financial outlay. However, my belief is that the positive benefits of these stem cells if ever required in future, are priceless. In order to shed some light on stem cell storage, here are the five main reasons why we are doing … Continue reading

The ‘It’ Clown Could Be a Painkiller For Kids, Study Suggests – Inverse

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2017

The upcoming release of the It remake this September spells doom for the rapidly declining reputation of clowns. History has never been totally kind to these powder-faced jokers, but their public image took a hit in 2016 after Jared Leto appeared in Suicide Squad, which may or may not have led to a rash of clown-faced trolls getting arrested across the United States. Will clowns be pegged as weird bad guys forever? Not if a team of Israeli childrens doctors have their say. It turns out that clowns have an unexpectedly analgesic effect on physical pain, at least in kids receiving treatment for cerebral palsy, as their recent study in PLoS One showed. In the paper, published in April, the researchers showed that clown-care can help numb the pain caused by injections, which are used frequently in cerebral palsy treatment. Most children receiving clown-care reported lower pain levels similar to other clown studies, which is the goal of behavioral and cognitive interventions, the researchers wrote, noting that kids that didnt get clown care experienced a high level of pain that was unexpectedly high. The 45 kids with cerebral palsy made an ideal study group because their treatment exposes them to … Continue reading
