The upcoming release of the It remake this September spells doom for the rapidly declining reputation of clowns. History has never been totally kind to these powder-faced jokers, but their public image took a hit in 2016 after Jared Leto appeared in Suicide Squad, which may or may not have led to a rash of clown-faced trolls getting arrested across the United States. Will clowns be pegged as weird bad guys forever? Not if a team of Israeli childrens doctors have their say. It turns out that clowns have an unexpectedly analgesic effect on physical pain, at least in kids receiving treatment for cerebral palsy, as their recent study in PLoS One showed. In the paper, published in April, the researchers showed that clown-care can help numb the pain caused by injections, which are used frequently in cerebral palsy treatment. Most children receiving clown-care reported lower pain levels similar to other clown studies, which is the goal of behavioral and cognitive interventions, the researchers wrote, noting that kids that didnt get clown care experienced a high level of pain that was unexpectedly high. LOS ANGELES--(Business Wire)--The Orthopaedic Institute for Children announced today the expansion of the UCLA/OIC Center for Cerebral Palsy to the institutes downtown Los Angeles campus. The current center is housed at UCLA in West Los Angeles. Concurrent with this expansion OIC also announced the appointment of Rachel Thompson, M.D., as the centers new associate director. Cerebral palsy is the most common childhood disability in the United States, affecting more than 760,000 children and adults nationally. The UCLA/OIC Center for Cerebral Palsy is the only interdisciplinary clinic in Southern California that evaluates and treats people with cerebral palsy throughout the lifespan. What Is It? Cerebral palsy is the name given to a large group of disorders that affect muscles and movement. These disorders begin early in life and result from brain injuries or problems with brain development before birth. Although the specific brain injury or problem causing cerebral palsy does not worsen, the movement problems can vary over time. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the parts of the brain that control muscles and movement. There are many possible ways that the brain can be damaged, including problems during pregnancy, infection, stroke, genetic problems, lack of oxygen, severe jaundice or diseases that cause the brain to develop abnormally. Cerebral palsy can also occur after birth, such as when there is an infection of the brain or a head injury. I think it personally really speaks volumes to at least some point getting some commitment, said Dr. Sean Murray, medical director of NEO Kids. Wynne was at NEO Kids at Health Sciences North on May 23 to tout the province's new OHIP+ Children and Youth Pharmacare Program, which would make prescription medications free to those aged 24 and younger starting next year. A Derry mother whose 10-year-old son suffers from a rare life-limiting disease has appealed for donations to help get him to America to avail of cannabis treatment that is illegal here. Lynda McIntyres son, Cian, suffers from A-T (Ataxia-Telangiectasia), which is a rare and complex genetic disorder that affects a number of different systems within the body. A-T has many symptoms including difficulty with movement and co-ordination, a weakened immune system and an increased risk of cancer. Many sufferers die before their 20th birthday. Lynda said that Cians condition is declining and that there is no specific treatment available for his illness but rather a fragmentary approach to treating facets of his condition with medicines for a number of different ailments. Cian has A-T, there is no cure and there is no treatment, he is only being treated for other conditions that make up his condition like cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, immune deficiency and in his case, recently anxiety and depression, she told the Derry News. Suffering from cerebral palsy as the result of a near-drowning last spring, 3-year-old Rylan Titus requires caregiversaround-the-clock for his every need. His mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a Medicaid-provided nurse all take turns caring for him. Rylan is limited to communicating with a sparse handful of words and phrases. He isnt able to walk without assistance, feed himself or partake in the many activities a young child his age would typically do. He cant run around on a playground, jump in puddles in the rain, or go to typical preschool. Just more than one year ago, he was submerged in water for up to an hour after falling into a retention pond near his fathers apartment, which cut off oxygen to his brain, causing him to suffer from cerebral palsy.
