What is a pre-existing condition? – CBS News
Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017
In the new version of the American Health Care Act (AHCA), the Republican bill to replace the Obama-era Affordable Care Act (ACA), one of the major points dividing the GOP conference was the treatment of pre-existing conditions. The guarantee of health care coverage to people with pre-existing conditions has been one of the ACA's most popular features. Under the law, insurance companies cannot refuse to cover those with pre-existing conditions, that is, health issues that pre-date a new health insurance coverage. Insurers also can't charge more or refuse to pay for Obamacare "essential benefits" for any pre-existing condition. And, once enrolled in a plan, insurers can't deny such patients coverage or raise rates based solely on their health. The new GOP plan requires insurers to cover pre-existing conditions, and for those with continuous health care coverage, nothing will change. There are some caveats, though. Insurers would be able to charge more to people with gaps in their insurance coverage. And a recent change, the MacArthur amendment, would allow states to waive some of the Obamacare requirements, including one that's relevant to pre-existing conditions. States that are granted such a waiver would allow insurers to set premiums based on health status … Continue reading

Health care bill says it covers pre-existing conditions. But some are … – CNN
Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017
The Affordable Care Act that rolled out under President Barack Obama mandated that insurers charge everyone the same amount, regardless of their health history, and that they cover essential health benefits, such as prescription drugs, hospitalization and doctors' visits. The Trump administration's American Health Care Act -- which squeaked through in the House on Thursday but must still be voted on by the Senate -- will allow insurance companies to raise prices for those with pre-existing conditions and to not guarantee that treatments are covered. Here's how some people think they may be impacted if the new health care bill becomes law: "I had no history of heart problems but nearly died several times that day," Hayes-Belmont, who lives in Mahwah, New Jersey, told CNN. She received a defibrillator implant by the end of the week. Over the years, her heart continued to weaken and walking up the stairs would leave her winded. Nearly three years ago, doctors performed another surgery to implant a combination pacemaker-defibrillator. It helps her stay alive. But she's worried about what will happen when it's time to replace her device. She had insurance through her employer before she went on Medicare last year. She estimates … Continue reading

Posted: Published on April 29th, 2017
A quadriplegic four-year-old boy has been found safe and has been released into his familys care, after Queensland Police issued an amber alert yesterday when his parents took him from an appointment at a Brisbane hospital. Chase Walkers parents, Jacinda Walker and Marc Steven, have blasted police, Child Services and Lady Cilento Childrens Hospital, posting many emotional videos to social media claiming authorities lied about Chases medical situation and the family has been failed by the system. "Australia, stand up, everyone, this is beyond a joke," Ms Walker said last night, after Chase was found and taken back to hospital. "My son isn't in any danger, he has not lost any weight, he is stable, his stats are completely fine, and now they want to take my child and keep him in overnight with police standing there waiting around. "I'm overwhelmed with the fact that people can just stand there and watch a mother heartbreaking in tears, and try to protect her own, and they say we've got to listen to the doctors." The anti-vax parents claim Chase was born with cerebral palsy, but his condition worsened after receiving vaccinations. They say conventional medical treatment, including formula he was fed … Continue reading

Updated April 28, 2017 17:50:00 A sick four-year-old boy, taken by his parents from a Brisbane hospital, has been located safe and well after a major police search across Queensland and New South Wales. The boy was located in Newcastle on Friday afternoon and was being transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The major search was sparked on Thursday afternoon when the parents who have complained about the boy's medical treatment took him from the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane while he was being treated. Police said the boy, who is wheelchair-bound and has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, required urgent and ongoing medical attention. Detective Acting Inspector Grant Ralston said the parents had not explained why they took their son. "I believe hospital staff were talking to the parents and minutes later the hospital staff had gone into another room intending to return to talk to the parents, and they found the parents gone with the child," he said. The trio were located in Newcastle late Friday afternoon, with the mother speaking to police shortly before the father came forward with his son. "The mother gave police information as to where her son and the father may be, … Continue reading

Tadhg was a complete non-walker, but can now walk independently with a walker. THE parents of a six-year-old boy from Clonsilla with cerebral palsy have thanked locals for their support in helping make his wish to walk come true. Three years ago, Tadhg Kellys parents, Jonathan Kelly from Ballymun and Moya Muldowney from Co Mayo, were advised by doctors to put their son into an electric wheelchair as hed never walk and wasnt a candidate for surgery. Born six and half weeks premature, Tadhg began having seizures when he was seven-months-old. At 13 months he was diagnosed with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy. The condition left him unable to walk, or even crawl, so he moved by pulling himself along the floor. Treating Cerebral Palsy With UCB Stem Cells – Financial Tribune
Posted: Published on April 24th, 2017
The biggest national project to treat patients with cerebral palsy (CP) through injection of stems cells from umbilical cord blood (UCB) into the brain began its trial run in March. The project is jointly undertaken by Royan Institute, Childrens Medical Center (affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences), and the Iran Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO). In the first phase, it will provide treatment to 130 children with CP between the ages 5-13. The treatment was tested in September 2016 on children with CP in some hospitals, and the results were highly satisfactory. Approximately four in every 1,000 children in Iran have CP while in the developed countries the rate is 2 to 2.5 per 1000 live births. Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term for the effects of damage to a developing brain by various causes. It is connected with a range of symptoms, including muscle weakness and movement problems.
