Surgery Helps Young Girl with Cerebral Palsy Walk – Newswise – Newswise (press release)

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2017

Newswise Bhoomi Manjunatha, 5, has been able to rely less on her walker and wheelchair, and more on her own two feet, because of a surgery performed at Nationwide Childrens Hospital. Her hard work and determination in physical and occupational therapy post-surgery has also helped Bhoomi continue to make strides. Bhoomi was born with cerebral palsy and spasticity, a muscle control disorder that involves tight or stiff muscles and the inability to control those muscles. Spasticity affects more than 12 million people worldwide, including 80 percent of people with cerebral palsy. The spinal surgery Bhoomi had in January, called selective dorsal rhizotomy, was performed by Jeffrey R. Leonard, MD, chief of Neurosurgery at Nationwide Childrens. In the operating room, the surgery team anatomically divided out dorsal nerve roots which control the sensory portion of the spinal cord. They stimulate them electronically to determine which rootlets were abnormal and section about 60 percent of the feedback to prevent the tightening and stiffness that Bhoomi experienced. The surgery went well, but my part is easy. It is Bhoomi who has months of hard work and therapy ahead of her to strengthen her muscles to take advantage of her newfound mobility, said Dr. … Continue reading

‘Heartbreaking’: Medical standoff leaves man with cerebral palsy stranded at hospital for weeks – Washington Post

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2017

Alex Scott cannot speak. If he could, he might be able to answer a crucial question that has pitted the people who speak for him against one another and left him stranded in a Northern Virginia hospital for three weeks. At issue: Does the 45-year-old with cerebral palsy need a feeding tube? Scotts relatives say the group home where he has lived for two decades told them it would not take him back without a feeding tube. His family says the medical procedure is unnecessary and would benefit group-home employees more than Scott. The struggle over the feeding tube, advocacy groups say, illustrates what can happen to people with disabilities when caregivers disagree about what is best for them. The family has filed a complaint with the U.S. Justice Department and contacted the Office of Human Rights within Virginias Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. In the meantime, Scott remains at Inova Loudoun Hospital, with his sister, Samantha Tunador, cataloguing each day on social media with the hashtag #takeAlexhome. Day 11, Tunador wrote April 10 on Facebook. I promise you Alex, we are doing everything we can to get you out of the hospital and back to your home. … Continue reading

April 20, 2017 07:00 ET | Source: David Steenblock, D.O. Inc. SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., April 20, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- David Steenblock, an osteopathic physician based in San Clemente, CA, uses stem cells and other therapies to achieve significant and improved lifestyle outcomes for many stroke patients. Many of our cases have demonstrated improved mobility for stroke victims who received stem cell therapy, along with other therapies, including chelation and hyperbaric oxygen, says Dr. Steenblock. One patient who suffered a stroke several years ago, came to Dr. Steenblocks clinic to undergo the full stroke program. This included EDTA chelation, a procedure that removes heavy metals from the blood, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, along with stem cells from his bone marrow to effect healing and restoration. After having the bone marrow stem cells, the patients eyesight improved, and both of his knees, which hadnt been working well, were back to functioning almost normally. In addition, his hip joint went back to normal function and he believes his balance when walking has improved tremendously. The EDTA Chelation Therapy, a treatment used to remove heavy metals from the blood, was used with hyperbaric oxygen, which can lead to significant neurologic improvements for stroke … Continue reading

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WLUC) - "She's going to keep progressing, but eventually KIF1A will kind of win and pull her down," Sadie Scott's mom Shannon said. Sadie Scott's parents are doing everything they can to stop that from happening. Sadie, a curious, energetic 20-month-old, was recently diagnosed with KIF1A Disorder, a degenerative brain disorder that's caused her to be legally blind and low-tone. The Scott's just returned from New York, where they met with Dr. Wendy Chung, a geneticist who's agreed to research KIF1A Disorder, and other KIF1A families. While there, the Scott's were given some tough news. "Dr. Chung explained that there's a couple different kinds of mutations," Shannon Scott said. "Unfortunately the kind that Sadie has is the stronger of the two options out there." While emotions ran high on the trip, Shannon Scott said overall, it gave her hope. "It was really comforting to connect with other families and the fact that Dr. Chung has made a plan for us to pursue with the funds that we raise makes the idea of a treatment for this disease really tangible," Shannon Scott said. So what's next? For one, they need to get a mouse for the study, which will … Continue reading

A Johannesburg mother has told of how a multimillion-rand payout will change her child's life. A Johannesburg mother has told of how a multimillion-rand payout will change her child's life. The mother, who asked not be named, took on the Gauteng department of health after her daughter, five, was born with cerebral palsy due to negligence by staff at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Diepkloof, Soweto. She was awarded R25.4-million in damages by the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg in February. Although the department was ordered to pay by March 8, it has not done so. The child suffers from severe cerebral palsy due to failure by the hospital doctors to do an emergency Caesarean section when she was born on December 30 2011. She cannot sit, talk, walk or even crawl. The mother and child live in a two-roomed shack. "First, I want her to have a home where she will be able to move freely. I want her to go to school so she can learn, play and be with children like her. "She cannot do anything on her own," said the woman, originally from Limpopo. The mother said her daughter had not led a normal … Continue reading

Weather-Forecast Tool Adapted to Evaluate Brain Health of Oxygen … – Newswise (press release)

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2017

Newswise DALLAS April 10, 2017 UT Southwestern Medical Center pediatric researchers have harnessed an analytical tool used to predict the weather to evaluate the effectiveness of therapies to reduce brain injury in newborns who suffer oxygen deprivation during birth. The analytical tool, called wavelet analysis technology, is best known for predicting long-term weather patterns, such as El Nino. UT Southwestern researchers say this same analytical tool can help improve assessment and treatment of newborns with asphyxia, which is when the babys brain is deprived of oxygen due to complications during birth. The non-invasive method produces real-time heat maps of the infants brain that doctors can use to determine whether therapies to prevent brain damage are effective. These are babies to whom something catastrophic happened at birth. What this technology does is measure physiologic parameters of the brain blood flow and nerve cell activity to produce a real-time image of what we are calling neurovascular coupling. If there is high coherence between these two variables, you know that things are going well, said Dr. Lina Chalak, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern and lead author of the study. The wavelet analysis correlates information from two non-invasive technologies that are currently … Continue reading
