Starpoint staff raises money for Variety Club celebrity twins – Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2017

The Starpoint Central School District family saw a couple of familiar faces on their televisions on April 2. Twins Kelly and Kyle Hoffman were this years celebrity children for the 55th annual Variety Kids telethon that supports Women and Childrens Hospital. The two 6-year-olds were born 10 weeks early and each only weighed two pounds, nine ounces. While at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Kelly and Kyle struggled to breathe and eat. They relied on oxygen machines for eight weeks and feeding tubes for six weeks. It was very touch and go while the twins struggled to stay alive. They were eventually allowed to go home with their parents, Stacy and Brian Hoffman, but both twins exhibited a severe delay with gross motor skills and moderate delay with fine motor skills by the time they were 6 months old. The Fricano Primary kindergartners were monitored by the Robert Warner Center and Women and Childrens Hospital. It was a blessing to have the Robert Warner Center. Their recommendation was very helpful and allowed us as parents to increase and add services through early intervention when necessary, Stacy Hoffman said. The therapists there are wonderful. They know how to get children … Continue reading

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) AGeorgia woman with Western New Yorkties is taking on a big challenge: get more federal funding for the 17 million people across the country with cerebral palsy. Its a condition she was diagnosed with as a baby, and now wants to help others. Lauren Walier, 18, said, I own it. I love it. Im definitely not one of those people who is ashamed of what they are. When Lauren Wailerwas first diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a baby, her parents never let her be negative. She said, They basically raised me thinking that I could do anything that I wanted to do, just like any other kid, and to reach for the stars and to follow your dreams. And following her dreams meant being a leader. She attended a Cerebral Palsy conference at the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. I learned there was no federal funding for cerebral palsy research. Which is insane. On top of that it affects 17 million people world wide. Its called the forgotten disability. None of those things add up and that killed me, she said. So she came up with the Make LemonAide Foundation, raising money for research, and … Continue reading

Community rallies to get Alex (1) treatment – Wicklow People

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

Alex Byrne, daughter of Kiltegan native James Byrne and Anne Donnelly suffered extensive brain damage in the womb, and was delivered by emergency C-section in January 2016. 'It was a normal pregnancy with no issues but the day before Alex was due I noticed that she had stopped moving,' Alex's mother Anne said. At some stage in the 24 hours before her birth, Alex was deprived of oxygen in the womb and suffered HIE (Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy). After delivery, Alex was placed in a hypothermic state to reduce her body temperature gradually in an attempt to reduce the level of damage to her brain. 'Unfortunately it didn't help Alex and as a result she has cerebral palsy and epilepsy and is visually impaired. We have wonderful families both in Dublin and in Kiltegan and we get great support from Enable Ireland, Jack & Jill Foundation and LauraLynn charity,' Anne added. However, while researching how they could further help their daughter, Anne and James discovered a specialist clinic in Chicago, USA which could assist Alex in improving her quality of life through physical therapy to strengthen her body and improve her use of her hands/arms. 'At present Alex cannot hold her … Continue reading

Ohio Family Awarded $14.5M In Cerebral Palsy Birth Injury Case – Legal Examiner

Posted: Published on April 7th, 2017

A Pennsylvania jury has ordered obstetrician-gynecologist Thomas Carnevale, along with his employer Clearfield Hospital, to pay around $14.5 million in damages to the family of a child diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The parents say Carnevales failures of obstetric care resulted in widespread brain damage, ultimately causing their childs neuromuscular disorder. In their birth injury lawsuit, parents who now live in Ohio accused Carnevale of failing to manage their childs 2012 delivery. The physicians alleged failure was a consequential one, the family says. Carnevale administered the mother an excessive dose of Pitocin, the parents claim, while continuing to deliver the medication as the childs heart rate began to drop. Pitocin is often used to stimulate contractions during difficult deliveries, but can also lead to precipitous decreases in fetal heart rate and other complications. At this point, Carnevale should have realized that the childs health was deteriorating rapidly, the family contends. Instead of discontinuing the medication, though, the doctor kept his patient on Pitocin for the remaining duration of the delivery. Carnevales second major mistake, the parents claim, was to forego the possibility of an assisted delivery even after the childs head was crowning. The delivery continued for another ten minutes, according … Continue reading

Irish child with cerebral palsy celebrates second anniversary of life … – Irish Mirror

Posted: Published on April 7th, 2017

A child with cerebral palsy has celebrated the second anniversary of a life-changing operation that enabled him to walk. Six-year-old Tadhg Kelly was facing life in a wheelchair as a result of the movement disorder that affects his muscles. At just three, doctors told his parents Moya, 43, and 44-year-old Jonathan who have both battled cancer their son would never walk. But they refused to give up and raised 80,000 to send Tadhg to St Louis in the US for spinal surgery. Dubliner Moya said: We were advised the sooner we put him in an electric wheelchair, the better. But having seen the success of many other Irish children who had travelled to America for treatment we refused to give up hope and decided to apply to see if Tadhg was a candidate for a surgery. Having just finished treatment for breast cancer myself, the prospect of raising that amount of money was daunting but we would have done anything to make this possible. We had our share of bad luck with Tadhgs dad having also fought cancer a few years previously. It was time for something positive to happen. Tadhg had Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery to open up the … Continue reading

Stem cells offer hope for autism – CNN

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2017

It wasn't always so. Just a couple years ago, Ryleigh, 11, was scared of her sister when she'd throw tantrums and screaming fits. "She would've fought and kicked," Ryleigh says, noting that it wouldn't have been possible to sit like this next to Gracie. Gracie, 7, interrupts: "I don't even remember it." "We do," says her mother, Gina Gregory. Gracie has autism, a condition that affected nearly every aspect of her family's life after she was diagnosed at 2. But a new study is offering hope for the Gregorys and families like them. The results were impressive: More than two-thirds of the children showed reported improvements. A larger second trial is underway, one its researchers hope will lead to long-term treatment for children with autism. But for the Gregorys, the change in their daughter has been monumental. Gone are the days of Gracie throwing fits in long lines at Disney World or during dinner at restaurants. When a tantrum intruded on family outings, her mom and dad wished they had T-shirts that said "My kid has autism" to ward off judgmental stares. During autism therapy sessions, Gracie would kick, scream, spit and hit at her occupational therapist. "It was horrible … Continue reading
