EDITORIAL: It’s our screening, we want it now! – RU Daily Targum

Oftentimes, Rutgers University conducts research on topics that affect the student body and the surrounding community. And in a study that was published in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, Rutgers University did exactly that. The study focused on the development of pediatric evaluations and the delays that occur when patients with attention deficits, hyperactive disorder (ADHD), autism and cerebral palsy seek treatment. And through this research, it was discovered that the average national wait time for someone seeking developmental pediatric evaluations is anywhere between five to six months. The reason for this? The Rutgers study found that in the entirety of the United States, there are only 1,000 pediatricians who are trained to specialize in the treatment of these specific disorders. But that's not all. The study took a closer look at appointments made for pediatric evaluations in Spanish and discovered thatabout one-third of the programs for these evaluations did not offer any accommodations for those who spoke other languages. The study was conducted using a method known as the mystery shopper strategy, where, in this case, a bilingual research assistant contacted several pediatric programs asking to make an appointment for an evaluation for his son who was … Continue reading

Cord blood stem cells offer promising treatments for Cerebral Palsy
Posted: Published on April 4th, 2017
Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder that is caused by damage to the brain, often during pregnancy or childbirth. This brain damage causes impaired motor movements and muscle tone. CP can also lead to other conditions, such as learning disabilities and speech problems. Unfortunately, there is no cure for CP, and treatments are limited. To find a better treatment for CP, scientists have turned to regenerative medicine with cord blood infusions. This treatment utilizes the stem cells found in umbilical cord blood. Stem cell injections are promising treatments for multiple conditions, because they have the natural ability to development into any other cell type. For example, skin cells and brain cells look different, and they perform very different functions. Stem cells, depending where they are injected and under which conditions, have the capability of developing into any type of cell. Regarding CP, stem cells could be injected into the damaged central nervous system, where they may be able to become healthy brain cells to improve motor and cognitive function. This is referred to as regenerative medicine, because the stem cells are used to regenerate brain tissue. Several studies have been performed by injecting stem cells into the central nervous … Continue reading

‘Our dreams are coming true’: other Oxfordshire families who fundraised for cerebral palsy surgery – Witney Gazette
Posted: Published on March 28th, 2017
THE Balmer family are not alone in their quest to secure cerebral palsy treatment known as selective dorsal rhizotomy. Several families appeared in the Oxford Mail before, seeking the same surgery. Barton mum Paula Masih-Gill fundraised for SDR for her son Gabriel, now 17, who has cerebral palsy as well as a complex bone condition. He has since been accepted for surgery in Nottingham, scheduled for August. Mrs Masih-Gill, 41, said: Its a massive relief, we fought for this for five years. All our dreams are coming true. Initially we thought the operation was only done in America. The operation was pioneered decades ago in America but only recently made it across to the UK. Kidlington mum Sophie Haines, 30, made her first public appeal in 2013 for SDR funding for her son Camren. Now six, Camrens spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy is still hampering his childhood as his family struggles to meet the cost of surgery in the USA. Mrs Haines said: We are still fundraising, Camren is not deemed eligible for SDR in the UK because he is too severely affected [by his condition]. With this surgery, Ive seen children go from commando crawling to walking unaided. I want … Continue reading

Appeal to help four-year-old girl receive treatment to walk on her own two feet – Oxfordshire Guardian
Posted: Published on March 27th, 2017
The family of a four-year old girl suffering from cerebral palsy are appealing for help in funding vital therapy to allow the little girl to walk independently. Lenuta Magda and husband Nicolaeare hoping to reach a total of 30,000 to fund Alinas physiotherapy and specialist oxygen therapy to help her lead a more normal life. At the moment, the plucky youngster has splints on both legs and on her right arm and relies on a walking stick. The family, who live in Oxford, are hoping that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) will help achieve the best outcome for her future quality of life. The therapy, which takes up to three hours a session, enhances the bodys natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber. The family are planning on travelling to Romania to undergo the treatment, costing around 100 a day for 15-20 days. The therapy is significantly cheaper abroad than it is in the UK, costing up to 300 a day, but it needs to be repeated every four to six months to achieve the best outcome. When asked how her daughter is coping, Lenuta said: Shes amazing. She goes to oxygen therapy for three … Continue reading

NHS refuses to fund physio to help cerebral palsy sufferer Ben Baddeley walk pain-free – Mirror.co.uk
Posted: Published on March 27th, 2017
The family of cerebral palsy sufferer Ben Baddeley have spoken of their despair after the NHS refused to fund his treatment. North Staffs Clinical Commissioning Group has told Amy and Gary Baddeley they will not pay for the vital physio Ben needs to walk without pain. Mirror readers helped to raise 20,000 to privately fund two selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) operations cancelled by the NHS due to Tory cuts in Feb 2014. Family, friends, and supporters gave another 25,000 for follow up treatment. But the Baddeleys have now run out money, and may make a bid to get the 11,000 fee for Bens first op returned, as it was cancelled by the NHS at the very last minute. They were told to write to the Parliamentary Ombudsman if they disagree with the funding decision. Amy, 32, of Silverdale, Staffs., said: We are in contact with the gentleman who paid 11,000 for that first op and in his opinion the NHS should return the money. Ben is currently suffering with his hips and he really needs that to be treated before further damage is done. His account is currently empty. We are waiting on a donation via cheque to clear so … Continue reading

Peace Bridge to go green tonight to mark Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day – Buffalo News
Posted: Published on March 26th, 2017
The Peace Bridge, at the request of the Make Lemon Aide Foundation, will be bathed in green lighting Saturday to mark National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day. Lauren Walier, 18, began the nonprofit foundation after she learned six years ago that there was little federal funding for a condition that she and 17 millions others have across the country. Walier and her family live outside Atlanta, but her parents, Sherry and Peter Walier, are Hamburg natives, and many of the foundations activities take place in Western New York. The Walier family looks to improve CP treatment in Buffalo using some of the proceeds raised in Run/Walk/Roll events in the region. This years fourth annual event will take place June 11 at Wilkeson Pointe at the Outer Harbor. For more information, visit makelemonaide.org. Also Saturday, the Niagara Falls Illumination Board will turn off the lights on the Horseshoe and American falls from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. to mark the World Wildlife Funds global Earth Hour initiative and help raise awareness and support for action on the issue of climate change. Comments(0) A fundraising campaign has been launched in aid of the family of a mum killed in the Westminster terror attack. Married mother-of-two Aysha Frade, 43, was among those killed when a car careered across Westminster Bridge on Wednesday (March 22) afternoon. Her story touched Shane Yerrell, 32, from Waltham Abbey, who has set up a Justgiving page in her memory. "I went to the scene to pay my respects," he said. "I read about Aysha, she was a mum on her way to pick up her kids that really got me. "No-one should have to be taken away from their children. "I was touched by her situation." Shane received a British Citizen award at Westminster just a couple of months ago, and noticed the contrast in the atmosphere, but still found people banding together in defiance of terrorism. "When something like this happens, people pull together," he added. A young boy with a rare form of cerebral palsy is able to play with his friends at school for the first time thanks to a new powered wheelchair. Born prematurely at 35 weeks, Alfie Porter-Smith was diagnosed with a rare form of cerebral palsy at just nine-months-old. The condition left him floppy and unable to walk unaided.
