Obamacares 10 essential health benefits cover basic services such as vaccines and pediatric visits Joe Raedle / Getty Images, file Heres a rundown of what they are: Most Americans get their health insurance through an employer, and most employer-sponsored plans offer most of these benefits as a matter of course. Fewer than 10 percent of Americans buy health insurance on the individual market and thats the market covered by the ACAs essential benefits. Pre-Obamacare, insurance companies could offer very cheap policies that either did not cover many conditions, or that charged a very high deductible or co-pay for such claims. Advocates for keeping in the essential health benefits clause say its the only way to make health insurance manageable and fair. Health insurance is confusing enough as is, writes Jeanne Lambrew, who worked on health reform under Obama and who is now at the Century Foundation. Rolling back benefit standards and allowing insurers to make coverage decisions would add to that confusion. And it would put millions of Americans at risk for having a health insurance card but remaining under-insured. House Speaker Paul Ryan said its about choice and lowering costs. House likely to reject Kasich change to program helping state’s … – The Columbus Dispatch

Posted: Published on March 25th, 2017

Jim Siegel The Columbus Dispatch @phrontpage Facing a wave of opposition from medical professionals and families caring for the states sickest children, House Republicans plan to strip from the budget proposed changes to the Bureau of Children with Medical Handicaps. As part of his two-year, $66.9 billion budget, Gov. John Kasich proposed eliminating the bureau, slashing income eligibility in half for babies born after July 1, and shifting the program into Medicaid managed care. The bureau screens providers, assuring a broad network of experienced and available specialists, said Dr. Jim Duffee, who testified to lawmakers on behalf of the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Medicaid managed care plans do not have a similar provider network and cannot guarantee continuous care by qualified specialists, he said. The bureau pays for medicine, treatment and services not covered by insurance for more than 41,000 children with conditions such as cystic fibrosis, epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Duffee said it is well positioned to fill a gap when confused and anguished parents are told their child has a serious developmental disorder. The cumbersome preauthorization process of Medicaid managed care often serves to delay or even deny timely, appropriate evaluation or treatment. The … Continue reading

Representatives of six provincial health departments yesterday appeared before a joint sitting of parliament's standing committee on appropriations and the portfolio committee on health to discuss the delivery of health services. Some of the representatives raised the issue of high legal claims against their departments, which they said were mostly attributable to unscrupulous attorneys trying to cash in. The attorneys were said to have shifted their attention to state hospitals after the Road Accident Fund cracked down on the submission of inflated claims. Some of the provinces have contingent liabilities running into billions of rands. KwaZulu-Natal, which has the second-highest claims total after Gauteng, told the committee that its contingent liabilities for medical litigation was almost R10-billion. The province spent R243-million on claims in 2016-2017 - for which it had not budgeted. KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said the claims were not based only on allegations of negligence. Dhlomo said law firms advertised their services to encourage people to employ them if they felt they had received poor medical treatment from the state. He said lawyers were colluding with doctors to get patient files in order to lodge claims. Dhlomo said most of the claims against his department were birth- … Continue reading

Therapeutic riding improves motor control and self-confidence in … – Horsetalk

Posted: Published on March 22nd, 2017

Therapeutic horse-riding improved the confidence of children with cerebral palsy, providing them with hope and the feeling that they can cope with their lives, according to their parents. These benefits were on top of improvements in balance, trunk and posture control identified in the study carried out in Greece. Researchers Athanasia Laiou, Anna Christakou and Vaios Kaminiotis set out to assess the impact of therapeutic horse-riding, known as hippotherapy, on children with cerebral palsy from the parents perspective. Hippotherapy in the Greek model refers to the incorporation of equine movement by physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists as a physical treatment strategy. Interviews were undertaken with 10 parents. Their children were aged 4 to 18 and had received hippotherapy from a qualified hippotherapy clinical specialist weekly for at least the previous three months. Laiou and her colleagues, writing in the International Journal of Physiotherapy, said their results provided evidence that hippotherapy was a promising avenue, having physical and psychological benefits for children with cerebral palsy. Hippotherapy improved childrens daily activities, their independence and, in general, a better quality of life has been attained, while no negative impacts have been identified, they reported. The study team looked at other research in … Continue reading

Newly released figures show a 28 per cent hike in the number of kids with disorders such as cerebral palsy who are waiting more than 12 months for rehab care. The January stats represent a significant jump from last April, when 3,611 kids including 291 toddlers had been on a waiting list for over a year. And the situation is even worse for pensioners, with those forced to endure long delays for occupational therapy soaring by 68 per cent in just six months, up from 615 to 1,038. As of the start of 2016, there were 5,916 people with disabilities in Ireland who had gone a year or longer without any hope of an independent life 35 per cent more than this time last year. … Continue reading
