Local non-profit gets grant for equipment – New Jersey Hills
Posted: Published on February 19th, 2017
WEST CALDWELL TWP. Intensive Therapeutics, a local non-profit that helps children with special needs, has been awarded a $4,000 grant to help teach disabled kids how to walk on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016. The grant was awarded by the Montclair Foundation, a nonprofit that awards grants to charitable organizations in the areas surrounding Montclair. We are a small, grass-roots organization supporting children with special needs in New Jersey. It is amazing to me to see the support we are receiving from so many people to get this grant, said Intensive Therapeutics Executive Director Scott Matthews. This is such a wonderful opportunity for us to further the services we provide to children with special needs, so they can develop the skills necessary to walk, play and run in their own communities and neighborhoods. Matthews said the grant will help pay for a LiteGait and GaitSense system, a suspension system that lifts children slightly as they walk on a treadmill to put less stress on their joints and make walking easier. He said the new equipment will primarily be used for children with cerebral palsy. With cerebral palsy, those afflicted have paralysis on one side of their body. For the grant, kids … Continue reading

Treating Cerebral Palsy With Stem Cells – Financial Tribune

The biggest national project to treat patients with Cerebral Palsy (CP) through injection of stems cells from umbilical cord blood into the brain will be trialed in the country by the end of the current year in March, said Dr. Morteza Zarrabi, head of Royan Institute. The plan will be implemented jointly by Royan Institute, Childrens Medical Center (affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences), and Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization. In the first phase, it would provide treatment to 130 children with CP between the ages 5-13, IRNA quoted him as saying, on the sidelines of the conference Stem Cells and Their Potentials for Clinical Application, held at Kashan University of Medical Sciences Thursday. In September 2016, the treatment was tried out in a few children with CP in some hospitals, and the results were satisfactory, he said. Many questions must be answered before stem cell treatment becomes a success in the medical field such as: which of the various types of stem cells would be the best to use; what is the best way in which to use these cells and how will they affect the body; when does the treatment need to be given to achieve the best … Continue reading

A child undergoing therapy at Cerebral Palsy Clinic of Ramakrishna Mission in Visakhapatnam | RVK Rao VISAKHAPATNAM: The cerebral palsy clinic of Ramakrishna Mission in the city treats children affected by cerebral palsy, down syndrome, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), giving a ray of hope to the affected children. The clinic now adds Sandplay therapy, spider therapy and hydrotherapy. The clinic which previously catered only to the cerebral palsy patients, now offers therapy to autism, nerve palsy, down syndrome and ADHD. But the therapists at the clinic say that there is need for awareness among the parents. There are many parents who neglect their children affected with such syndromes. About 80 per cent of children affected with cerebral palsy is due to consanguineous marriages and in recent times there is an increase in the number of patients from Vizag district, while 20 per cent is from Odisha, said B Indira, Master of Physiotherapy (MPT), Neuro Sciences, in the clinic. However, while it was only 35 children who used to get treated till 2016, they increased to 64 of late which is mostly due to the word-of-mouth publicity, she added. Since the therapies are effective, the 25-year-old clinic is … Continue reading

By Conor McParland OVER 14,000 has been raised to continue vital treatment for a Glengormley toddler with cerebral palsy. Aoibheann OConnor (3) was born at 28 weeks and suffers from hydrocephalus and cerebral palsy due to a brain haemorrhage shortly after birth. Over 14,000 has been raised so far for the three year-old to continue specialised ABR (Advanced Bio-Mechanical Rehabilitation) to ease the physical constraints of her condition. The therapy focuses on a form of deep tissue massage to improve the functional ability of the muscles and skeleton. Speaking to the North Belfast News, mum Aisling said she has already noticed an improvement in her daughters condition since she began treatment in October. Aoibheann suffers from cerebral palsy which makes all her limbs tight, but her body is weak, she explained. Through some research and talking to people, I found out about ABR therapy which helps build up tissue in the body. Weve been doing it since October and already we have seen a difference in her. She can balance a bit more herself and you can feel the strength coming into her body Its a really slow progress. Its about realigning your whole body again we can see some … Continue reading

Survival rate improves for extremely premature infants – Washington Post
Posted: Published on February 16th, 2017
By Jia Naqvi By Jia Naqvi February 15 at 5:00 PM Survival rates for very early preterm infants have improved slightly, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday. Those who survive are also somewhat less likely to suffer from neurodevelopmental impairments, the study found. Researchers gathered survival and neurodevelopmental impairment data for 4,000 extremely premature infants by analyzing records from a National Institutes of Health research network. The infants were born between 22 and 24 weeks of gestation, rather than after a normal 40-week pregnancy. Survival rates of such infants born between 2000 and 2011 rose from 30 percent to 36 percent. The percentage of preterm infants who did not develop neurological impairments increased from 16 percent to 20 percent. The survival rates are increasing over time, and the rates of impairment did not go up with that increase, which is very reassuring, said study author Rosemary Higgins, a program scientist at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Better health care for expectant mothers and newborns may be contributing to higher survival rates and a lower percentage of infants with neurodevelopmental impairments, according to the authors of the study. Derbyshire businessman’s amazing 10k gift for op to help Kareena Hayes walk again – Derby Telegraph
Posted: Published on February 15th, 2017
Comments(0) For Kareena Hayes, it's the best news she could have received. Just days ago, the nine-year-old's family was devastated when a charity box containing cash for an operation to help her walk unaided was stolen from a Borrowash cafe. But now Kareena, who has cerebral palsy, says she feels "amazed" after a local businessman, who wished to remain anonymous, came forward with the 10,000 needed for the op. Kareena was left heartbroken when thieves smashed their way into the Marmalade and Tea cafe in Derby Road between last Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning and stole the collection box, which had a photo of her on it. The Derby Telegraph ran a front-page story on the cruel theft on Saturday, headlined "How could they?". Without the operation Kareena might never have walked again. But the 10,000 means private treatment to get Kareena walking can start. Kareena, who lives in Long Eaton with her dad, Craig Hammond, said: "This is amazing. I can't believe it. It's fantastic and means an awful lot. "It will change my life forever. I want to thank the person so much." Mr Hammond, who is her full-time career, said he felt "speechless" when he heard the … Continue reading

Boy who sued hospital over care awarded 5.5m – RTE – RTE.ie

Updated / Wednesday, 15 Feb 2017 02:15 The High Court has approved a settlement of 5.5min the case of asix-year-old boy who was severely brain damaged due to an alleged delay in diagnosing and treating septicaemia and meningitis when he was eight days old. Robert Montgomery who has cerebral palsy, is visually impaired and cannot talk, settled his action against the National Maternity Hospital today. In their High Court action his parents claimed there was a six-hour delay in administering antibiotics after he attended hospital. Through his mother, Robert had sued the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, Dublin over his care when he was admitted to the hospital and later diagnosed as suffering from septicaemia and later neo-natal meningitis. Senior Counsel Denis McCullough said the family would claim that the appropriate antibiotics were not given to Robert in time and the possibility of the meningitis being dealt with was missed. Mr McCullough saidif the appropriate antibiotics had been given in time Robert's condition "would be much less severe." Counsel told the court "an expression of regret" was being prepared by the hospital for Robert and his family, which was part of the settlement agreed after mediation talks. Robert, from Upper … Continue reading

Portishead family try to raise thousands for ill son’s treatment after … – North Somerset Times

06:16 13 February 2017 Tom Wright Josh Walters with his younger brother Kasey. Archant A Portishead family needs to raise 26,500 for pioneering treatment which could ensure their nine-year-old son can enjoy the best life possible. Email this article to a friend To send a link to this page you must be logged in. Josh Walters was born 11-and-a-half weeks premature and while he was still an infant, doctors realised he had cerebral palsy (spastic diplegia) which affects mobility. The NHS has offered a life-changing procedure to more than 100 people with a condition like Joshs, but is refusing to pay for his operation, leaving his family to call on it to make a pragmatic decision. The surgery would immensely improve Joshs quality of life, potentially for the next 70 or 80 years of his life, and in his fathers own words would reduce Joshs need for public healthcare in the future. Joshs early days were spent in Southmead Hospitals intensive care unit but he was released home with his parents, although needed extra oxygen. Josh was a little slower at starting to walk, but not significantly for any underlying issues to be apparent. However his father Andy Walters said: … Continue reading
