This page chronicles my experience with and recovery from Bells Palsy. Ill continue to add my most current Bells Palsy Post (BPP) to the bottom. For links to helpful Bells Palsy-related sites, check out my Bells Palsy Information and Resources page. Last modified on 2011-02-27 15:20:57 GMT. 4 comments. Top. Hi, Im David. Galindo.me is my personal blog. I was diagnosed on Wednesday, April 9th, 2008 with Bells Palsy, a paralysis of the facial nerve. The result is that its pretty much impossible for me to control the muscles on the right side of my face. In the few days since this appeared, Ive researched several different informational sites and read others stories of their experiences with Bells Palsy. Among the many tips, suggestions and advice was the recommendation to document my progress with pictures. I figure I can do that here on my blog. That way, I can hopefully measure my improvement and share my frustrations and achievements. Also, if someone else with this condition comes along and reads this, maybe it will provide them with some helpful information. Here is a picture taken of me last Sunday, April 6th. I was hiking the Wind Cave trail at Usery … Continue reading

NINDS Supports Outstanding Projects Using Invertebrate Model Systems The mission of NINDS is to seek fundamental knowledge about the brain and nervous system, and to use that knowledge to reduce the burden of neurological disease. We frequently receive questions about whether NINDS prefers one animal model over another. NINDS mission is impartial to the model system employed, but is advanced by the neuroscientific impact of each research project. We would not presume to instruct investigators on what model to employ to answer the question they are most passionate about pursuing. Rather, we have great respect for the peer review system, where each scientist has the opportunity to make his or her case to a review committee. Given constrained resources over the past 12 years, we realize that the peer review process has become taxed, but we feel that it remains the best and most democratic system in the world. Neuroscience applicants using invertebrate model systems have successfully competed for NINDS grant funding in peer review in recent years. Cerebral Palsy & Aging | Managing Cerebral Palsy Symptoms

By Diane Walker, RN, MS, CSA on March 22, 2013 under Neuromuscular Diseases Information about cerebral palsy usually focuses on children, and for good reason: cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that impair the brain and nervous system and usually surface within a childs first two years. But cerebral palsy isnt just a childrens condition. There are also many adults living with cerebral palsy. The same medical advances that have increased the lifespan of the general population have done the same thing forcerebral palsy life expectancy. Most people with cerebral palsy now lead long lives. However, it is only within the last 15 years that people with cerebral palsy have started to live long enough to be concerned about the effects of aging on top of a lifetime of living with disability. With aging comes special challenges for those with cerebral palsy. Though cerebral palsy is a non-degenerative condition, meaning that it doesnt get worse with aging, a lifetime of fighting physical impairment can mean that people with cerebral palsy often start feeling the effects of age much earlier. What are the Symptoms of Aging and Cerebral Palsy? Some common physical problems that people with cerebral palsy experience as … Continue reading

Additional Information and Resources on Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy For the Treatment of Autism, Cerebral Palsy And Other Neurological and Developmental Disorders Or "Off-Label" Conditions and Diseases Introduction to the Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Neurological and Developmental Disorders [Request to Dr. James Neubrander to author this section is pending] [Example:] Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is classically defined as the inhalation of 100% oxygen at greater than 1 atmosphere absolute (ATA) in a pressurized chamber. This definition is now popularly defined as the inhalation of varying degrees of oxygen at greater than 1 atmosphere absolute (ATA) in a pressurized chamber. You will hear many terms used interchangeably by lay people and professionals alike: hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT), hyperbaric therapy (HBT), hyperbaric oxygen (HBO), hyperbaric air therapy (HBAT), hyperbaric enriched air therapy (HBEAT), etc. However, the most common way the term is used by the autism community is to just say "HBOT". Then most parents will state what they are doing, e.g. "we're using 1.5, 1.75, or 2.0 atmospheres in a hard chamber with 100% oxygen, or we're using a soft chamber (also referred to as a mild chamber) at 1.3 atmospheres 'with or without a mask' … Continue reading

Numerous medications, although often used off label for age and indication, may relieve the movement difficulties associated with cerebral palsy. These drugs target spasticity, dystonia, myoclonus, chorea, and athetosis. For example, baclofen, administered either orally or intrathecally, is often used for treating spasticity in these patients. AbobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport) is the first botulinum toxin to gain FDA approval for the treatment of lower limb spasticity in children aged 2-17 years. Approval was based on a randomized, multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, international Phase III study in 235 pediatric patients (158 received abobotulinumtoxinA and 77 received placebo) aged 2 to 17 years with lower limb spasticity due to cerebral palsy causing dynamic equinus foot deformity. Patients treated with abobotulinumtoxinA showed statistically significant improvement in efficacy assessments (ie, mean change from baseline in Modified Ashworth scale [MAS] in ankle plantar flexor muscle tone and mean Physicians Global Assessment [PGA]) response to treatment score at Week 4 and Week 12.[38] OnabotulinuimtoxinA (Botox)may reduce spasticity for 3-6 months and may be considered for off-label use in children with cerebral palsy with spasticity in the lower extremities (gastrocnemius, in particular).[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 39] This therapy can allow for improved range of motion, reduced deformity, improved response … Continue reading

Children and adults with cerebral palsy require long-term care with a medical care team. This team may include: Medications that can lessen the tightness of muscles may be used to improve functional abilities, treat pain and manage complications related to spasticity or other cerebral palsy symptoms. It's important to talk about the risk of drug treatments with your doctor and discuss whether medical treatment is appropriate for your child's needs. The selection of medications depends on whether the problem affects only certain muscles (isolated) or the whole body (generalized). Drug treatments may include the following: Isolated spasticity. When spasticity is isolated to one muscle group, your doctor may recommend injections of onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) directly into the muscle, nerve or both. Botox injections may help to improve drooling. Your child will need injections about every three months. Side effects may include pain, bruising or severe weakness. Other more-serious side effects include difficulty breathing and swallowing. Generalized spasticity. If the whole body is affected, oral muscle relaxants may relax stiff, contracted muscles. These drugs include diazepam (Valium), dantrolene (Dantrium) and baclofen (Gablofen). There is some risk of dependency with diazepam, so it's not recommended for long-term use. Its side effects include drowsiness, … Continue reading

Treatment of Cerebral Palsy: Play Therapy

Posted: Published on August 29th, 2015

Play is an essential activity for all children. This is where real learning begins. Because some children with cerebral palsy are more limited in their physical ability, it may not be easy for them to engage in spontaneous play, so be ready to give your child any assistance they may need to help them enjoy playing. This is an area where friends and family can be fully involved in the therapy of your childs development. Obviously, not all toys will be suitable for all children, as cerebral palsy varies so greatly, from a very mild disability to total immobility. Always be sure that the childs toys are accessible to him or her and that he or she has some way of letting you know what she wants to play with. As they get older, and depending on the severity of their disability, they will be able to indicate which toy theyd like in a clear and certain way. You must ensure, however, that they dont miss out on the early opportunity to make choices in the area of play. As early as possible you should devise a system through which your child can communicate to you their preferences. This may … Continue reading
