Woman accused of abandoning son is hospitalized in Md.
Posted: Published on April 13th, 2015
The Philadelphia woman accused of abandoning her quadriplegic son with cerebral palsy in the woods for five days is hospitalized in Montgomery County, Md., and will face extradition upon her release. Nyia Parler, 41, was admitted to a hospital Sunday morning with an undisclosed affliction. "When her treatment is completed, we will take her to court and she can either waive or fight extradition," said Capt. Paul Starks of the Montgomery County, Md., police. Philadelphia police said Parler, of Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia, left her 21-year-old son in a wooded area along Cobbs Creek with a blanket and a Bible before traveling to Maryland to visit her boyfriend. Her son was found Friday night by a passerby. He was admitted to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was being treated for malnutrition and dehydration. - Andrew Maykuth See the article here: Woman accused of abandoning son is hospitalized in Md. … Continue reading

Mother abandoned severely disabled son, 21, in woods for 5 days to see boyfriend
Posted: Published on April 12th, 2015
Tribune wire reports 7:24 p.m. EDT, April 11, 2015 Philadelphia A mother abandoned her 21-year-old quadriplegic son in the woods more than five days ago - so she could go see her boyfriend in Maryland, police said Saturday. Charges of assault and other charges against her are pending. The son, who has cerebral palsy and is non-verbal, was found near 59th and Cobbs Creek Parkway on Friday night, lying in leaves and covered with a blanket. A wheelchair and a bible were nearby. He had apparently been in the woods since at least Monday, enduring a week of cold and days of rain. "This kid is obviously a fighter," said Lt. John Walker, who called the case heartbreaking. He said the investigation would consider the victim's care over several years. He was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was hospitalized for treatment of dehydration and a laceration on his back. His condition had stabilized by Saturday, police said. Police said the young man was first reported missing when he failed to show up at school this week. The school contacted his mother and aunts. The mother said her son was with her in Maryland, according to police. The … Continue reading

Buses 'put schedule before user safety'
Posted: Published on April 8th, 2015
BRAD ROBERTS Last updatedWed Apr 08 19:33:00 UTC 2015 Charlotte Curd Bell Block bus user Brendan Cresswell, 27, is partially blind and has celebral palsy and has been having trouble with drivers who take off before passengers with disabilities get a chance to sit down. A Taranaki man with cerebral palsy and partial blindness says he is dismayed at the treatment of disabled people on New Plymouth buses. Bell Block local Brendan Cresswell, 27, had to grab hold of a pillar to steady himself when the bus took off in a hurry on Tuesday. He said the bus driver was running late and didn't care that he had not yet had a chance to sit down. Cresswell said public safety should be paramount. "When I rang the bus depot, a manager told me that in their opinion it is crucial for the buses to be on time, but my opinion is that it should be about public safety," he said. "The problem I have is that I feel bus drivers are not waiting enough for people to sit down," he said. Follow this link: Buses 'put schedule before user safety' … Continue reading

Crime By Arthur Kogan, Fri, April 3, 2015 A young Washington D.C. mother has pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated assault and armed child cruelty against her 9-year-old son who is suffering from cerebral palsy. Betty Threat, 27, admitted to the torturing, imprisoning and starving her child. This treatment reportedly occurred inside her apartment in June 2014. According to WUSA9, Threat and her boyfriend, Lester Jackson, poured scalding hot water on her disabled son, taped his arms and legs with duct tape, left him locked in the bathroom or bedroom for days on end and withheld food for months. The boy was found by his father, Taurus Bullock, who then rushed him to the Childrens National Medical Center. The doctors and staff at the hospital identified a total of 60 injuries and learned that the child had been locked in a bedroom for three months while being tortured by his mother and her then-boyfriend. Posted: Published on March 31st, 2015
A disabled toddler is going to undertake a trek around Snodland to kickstart a 30,000 fundraising campaign to help his best friend walk. Three-year-old Joe Scudder, of Roman Road, has cerebral palsy which makes his leg and arm muscles tighter than normal, particularly on the left of his body. He wants to help his friend Jamie Maynard, who is also three and has more severe symptoms. Jamie (left) and Joe, who are both three, met at a special physio class for children with cerebral palsey. Picture: Martin Apps Jamie, who lives just around the corner in Bingley Close, relies on a wheelchair to get around, or a walking frame with wheels for short distances. Joe often talks about Jamie. He said he wanted to help and suggested the sponsored walk. They dont moan or complain and they approach every challenge with huge smiles -Elizabeth Scudder, Joe's mum It is hoped this will change later this year when he has an operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital that will give him the best chance of walking unaided. Nurse responsible for disabled girls death facing fraud charges
Posted: Published on March 31st, 2015
A nurse serving a 10-year prison sentence after a 14-year-old cerebral palsy patient in her care starved to death in 2011 now faces additional charges for Medicaid fraud, officials said. Mollie Parsons, 45, was supposed to provide daily care for Makayla Norman, who weighed 28 pounds when she died on March 1, 2011. Normans body was covered with filth and open bedsores, her hair and eyebrows infested with lice and her diaper hadnt been changed for some time, according to Dayton police. She couldnt speak, move or feed herself. In all, five people were prosecuted for various crimes connected to Normans death, including her mother and doctor. An indictment filed last week in Daytons U.S. District Court alleges Parsons aided and abetted others in a scheme attempting to defraud Medicaid and taxpayers from 2009 to 2011. Prosecution in the federal case began in late 2013. Parsons, found guilty of manslaughter, is scheduled to be released Nov. 21, 2021 from the Ohio Reformatory for Women. Neither the prosecutor nor the defense attorney assigned to the case returned messages seeking comments Monday. D.C. mother pleads guilty to abuse of 9-year-old son with cerebral palsy
Posted: Published on March 31st, 2015
A Southeast Washington woman pleaded guilty Monday to pouring scalding water on her 9-year-old son, binding his ankles and wrists and covering his mouth with duct tape, and locking him in his room and bathroom during a four-month period last year. Betty T. Threatt, 27, wiped away tears as she pleaded guilty to three counts of child abuse and first-degree cruelty while armed in the treatment of her son, who has cerebral palsy. Threatt faces nine years in prison when she is sentenced June 12. During Mondays hearing, prosecutors unveiled grisly new details of how they say Threatt and her then-boyfriend abused the boy in their two-bedroom apartment on Brandywine Street SE. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Park said Threatt poured scalding water on her son and locked him in a bedroom and a bathroom for as many as five days at a time between March and June 2014. In addition, Parks said Threatts former boyfriend, Lester O. Jackson, 52, who also was charged in the case, instructed Threatt not to give her son food during the four-month period, which resulted in the boy becoming severely malnourished and extremely underweight. Jackson has rejected a plea deal and is scheduled to go … Continue reading

Mother reportedly locked up son with cerebral palsy and no one noticed
Posted: Published on March 30th, 2015
When the mother dropped her 9-year-old son off at his fathers Washington home last June, the father was struck by the appearance of the boy, whom he had not seen in about a year. The child appeared to be malnourished. He had bruises and burn marks, and there were bits of duct tape stuck to his wrists and ankles, his father later told social workers. Taurus Bulluck, 30, rushed his son to Childrens National Medical Center. Doctors determined the boy had 60 injuries, according to D.C. Superior Court documents. They called police. Police said that over a period of three months, between March and June 2014, the boys mother and her then-boyfriend kept the child locked in a bedroom in their Southeast D.C. apartment as punishment for misbehaving. The mother later told police she was embarrassed because the boy has cerebral palsy, according to court papers. She also said she hated her son and blamed him for a miscarriage, the papers said. The mother, Betty T. Threatt, 27, is to appear Monday before Judge Rhonda Reid Winston in D.C. Superior Court, and her attorney said in court that she intends to enter a plea deal with prosecutors. Neither side would … Continue reading
