Silverdale youngster's care costs parents 2,000 per month
Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015
Ben Baddeley with parents Gary and Amy THE parents of brave Ben Baddeley say his vital physiotherapy is costing about 2,000 per month. Cerebral palsy sufferer Ben requires aftercare following an operation to help him walk. But the determined 10-year-old will take part in a 'sponsored pedal' during a fund-raising fun day at Silverdale Workingmen's Club on March 14. Mum Amy, of Silverdale, says she has been told the cost of Ben's aftercare is 'way beyond' what the NHS would pay. Although the family was told by a medic from NHS England he would "seek clarification on the funding arrangements for post-operative rehabilitation", the current position, it appears, has not changed and no extra funding from the NHS will be provided. Now the family is pushing on with fund-raisers to help pay for the treatment, which currently stands at about 2,000 per month. Amy said: "My husband Gary is doing all the overtime that he can at the moment. The next cost will be the hydrotherapy which Ben will need. "But we are grateful for any support we receive." The fun day at Silverdale Workingmen's Club will run from 1pm until 4pm. View post: Silverdale youngster's care costs parents 2,000 … Continue reading

Olivers first steps after radical US surgery
Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015
Coleraine boy Oliver Dickey was diagnosed with spastic diplegia - a form of cerebral palsy - when he was 18 months old. His condition meant he was confined to life in a wheel chair. Parents Charlene and Neil researched a new treatment available in American. However, Olivers doctors were pessimistic and said the treatment would not work. Not to be deterred the family set out to raise the thousands needed for the treatment to send him across the Atlantic. Surgeons in St Louis removed inactive nerve endings from Oliver's spine to allow healthy new cells to grow. At the weekend the six-year-old walked unaided for the first time, just eight months after the surgery. Charlene Dickey said: Its unbelievable, to have come so far in just eight months. We couldn't have dreamt it, not so soon. She added: When they told us it wouldnt work, we couldnt give up. See more here: Olivers first steps after radical US surgery … Continue reading

Published: 20 Feb 2015 13:30 A LITTLE Port Glasgow boy who suffers from serious medical problems is being helped by a Greenock charity. Share this image Three-year-old Max Glover is undergoing therapy at the Glasgow Bobath Centre, which specialises in helping patients with cerebral palsy. Maxs problems have not been diagnosed, but his dad, Barry, says they are similar to those of cerebral palsy sufferers. Treatment at Bobath will include therapy to build up Maxs core strength. Barry said he and his wife, Jennifer, are very grateful to the Senit Foundation for paying for the six-week course at Bobath. Max was born at 29 weeks and five days. He spent four months in hospital fighting various infections and undergoing two bowel operations. As a result of being so premature, he has a number of serious medical conditions and needs varying levels of support. Read more: Brave Port boy's battle with serious illness … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy – It Can Be in Your Genes
Posted: Published on February 13th, 2015
Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise An international research group led by a team at the University of Adelaide has made what they believe could be the biggest discovery into cerebral palsy in 20 years. It has long been the belief that cerebral palsy occurs when a child experiences a lack of oxygen during pregnancy or at birth. However, the Australian Collaborative Cerebral Palsy Research Group, based at the University of Adelaides Robinson Research Institute, has found at least 14% of cerebral palsy cases are likely caused by a genetic mutation. The findings of this research are published in the Nature journal, Molecular Psychiatry. The Head of the Cerebral Palsy Research Group, Emeritus Professor Alastair MacLennan, says prior to this research it was believed that as little as 1% of cerebral palsy cases had a genetic cause. Cerebral palsy is a major neurodevelopmental disorder, which disrupts movement control, and it occurs in 1 in 400 children, Emeritus Professor MacLennan says. While we have long suspected that genes may play a role in the development of cerebral palsy, it wasnt until our research group mapped the DNA from cerebral palsy families that we could show genetic mutations are the … Continue reading

Researchers prove cerebral palsy can be genetic
Posted: Published on February 13th, 2015
NEW LINK FOUND: Professor Alastair MacLennan and patient Matthew Reinertsen, who has cerebral palsy. Australian researchers have proved cerebral palsy can be genetic, a finding with significant implications for the diagnosis, management and treatment of the debilitating condition which affects movement and posture. Long thought to be caused by a lack of oxygen during pregnancy or at birth, cerebral palsy is caused by genetic mutations in at least 14 per cent of case, Adelaide University researchers have found. However head of the cerebral palsy research group at Adelaide University's Robinson Research Institute Alastair MacLennan said it could be just the start, with up to half of cases potentially caused by genetic mutations. The team, including researchers from America and the Netherlands, mapped the DNA of hundreds of Australian cerebral palsy families, looking for common genetic features. Almost 100 gene mutations were found and some were transplanted into zebrafish, which Professor MacLennan said promptly lost control of their tail. "When we put the good gene back in, we recovered the movement of the fish," Professor MacLennan said. However he stressed that for humans, the implications of the study remained limited to cerebral palsy prevention - rather than curing the condition which … Continue reading

Mum of little girl with cerebral palsy raises cash for life-changing operation to fulfill daughter's dance dream
Posted: Published on February 13th, 2015
VIEW GALLERY The mum of a girl with chronic cerebral palsy is on a mission to raise funds for an operation which would help her daughter achieve her dream of becoming a dancer. Little Erin Jones, 4, from Rhiwbina, Cardiff, would love nothing more than to dance like other little girls her age, but is unable to walk unaided due to a severe form of cerebral palsy. The brave tot's parents, Jennifer, 39, and Berwyn Jones, 40, were devastated when their little girl was diagnosed with the condition when she was only 15 months old, and they soon became aware of her failure to reach the same milestones as her twin brother, Cai. The illness, called cerebral palsy spastic diplegia, means that Erin experiences excruciating muscle spasms in her legs, leaving her unable to walk unaided and needing leg splints and a wheelchair to get around comfortably. The couple hoped an operation known as Selective Doral Rhizotomy (SDR), could take away the spasticity in her legs and enable her to walk independently. But after funding for the life-changing procedure was turned down by the NHS, the family are desperately trying to raise the 40,000 to pay for the operation which … Continue reading

Genes may cause cerebral palsy
Posted: Published on February 12th, 2015
South Australian researchers say they've made a major breakthrough on the causes of cerebral palsy. A new link between cerebral palsy and genetic mutation could be the biggest breakthrough in 20 years, South Australian researchers say. A trial by the University of Adelaide's Robinson Research Institute has found that a large number of cerebral palsy cases are caused by a genetic mutation. It challenges the long-held belief that the condition is caused by a lack of oxygen during pregnancy or at birth. Now researchers have found at least 14 per cent of cerebral palsy cases are likely to have been caused by a genetic mutation. Cerebral palsy, a major neurodevelopmental disorder which can affect body movement, muscle control and intellectual functioning, occurs in one in 400 children. Professor Josef Gecz hopes the institute's breakthrough will lead to the condition being detected during or even before pregnancy, allowing for earlier treatment. "Prevention is difficult," he told reporters on Thursday. "Genes make mistakes. We know it from cancer research and we know it from other research in other disorders. "But as far as we know the cause we can implement different strategies, which is preimplantation diagnosis or other genetic reproductive options we … Continue reading

Family 'doted on' teenager who died after being given penicillin
Posted: Published on February 9th, 2015
The family of a teenager who died after doctors repeatedly gave her penicillin - despite knowing she was allergic to the drug - have urged patients to ask questions about their treatment. Ayaan Abdiqadir Maximed, who suffered from cerebral palsy, died after spending more than a month in hospital even though she was only admitted with a chest infection. The 14-year-old was admitted to Northwick Park hospital in Watford Road, Harrow, in November 2011 after developingan allergic reaction to medication prescribed for theinfection, where she was twice given penicillin - despite doctors knowing she suffered from an allergy to the drug. An inquest held at the North London Coroners Court from January 12 to 22 heard she suffered a severe allergic reaction and was then transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital for immediate treatment. However once Ayaan was transferred back to Northwick Park, doctors gave her another dose of penicillin at 6pm on December 15 and a second dose at 8am on December 16. Her condition rapidly deteriorated and she later died on December 25, 2011. Senior coroner Andrew Walker concluded Ayaans death was contributed to by neglect, and gave causes of death as septicaemia shock, bacterial infection, Stevens Johnsons Syndrome … Continue reading
