Botox Helps Children With Cerebral Palsy Get Back On Their Feet

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2015

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) A treatment commonly used to knock out wrinkles is helping children cope with cerebral palsy, even helping some walk when the disorder attacks their legs. When you combine botox and computer animation in the same sentence, you might think of a big Hollywood production. You might not guess that the combination of these two are getting children who might never walk back on their feet. Hearing a neurologist say your child may not be able to walk is frightening. The Johnsons twins Athena and E.J. were just 9 months old when both were diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a condition not uncommon in premature babies. Born 10 weeks early, Athena had physical challenges showing up in her legs. Dr. John Davids is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon who treats children with cerebral palsy. He says the earliest treatments include physical therapy, braces and casting the legs. Then at age 5, doctors turn to a treatment more commonly associated with supermodels instead of cerebral palsy patientsbotox. It was a little bit weird, you think of Botox as being more cosmetic type of a thing, said Athenas father, George Johnson. Her parents say the idea of botox to help her walk didnt … Continue reading

Cambridge teen Isabel Maranhao raises $1.3m for sick Brazilian children after feeling 'powerless to help'

Comments(0) A teenager who dreams of saving lives as a doctor raised $1.3 million for sick Brazilian children because she did not like the feeling of being powerless to help. Cambridge sixth former Isabel Maranhao was struck by the story of Arthur, a little Brazilian boy with cerebral palsy whose family needed 2,000 to pay for medical treatment aboard. The Netherhall student, who is from Brazil, turned to Facebook in April last year to ask for donations and within five months was funding treatment and related costs for 16 poorly children totalling 50,000. Her charity A Click of Hope was given an incredible boost of $1 million after she gave a presentation on Christmas Day to one of Brazils biggest online news websites, who are sponsoring her campaign. The 19-year-old, who is also launching a book project for Kenyan children and wants to go to medical school at Harvard University, is running her charity while studying for five A-levels maths, further maths, chemistry, physics and biology. She started raising money for sick children because she felt useless because she is not yet qualified to practice. She said: Well I saw the news and I felt really powerless about it and … Continue reading

Neuroscience: The brain, interrupted

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2015

Illustration: Paddy Mills Fabienne never found out why she went into labour three months too early. But on a quiet afternoon in June 2007, she was hit by accelerating contractions and was rushed to the nearest hospital in rural Switzerland, near Lausanne. When her son, Hugo, was born at 26 weeks of gestation rather than the typical 40, he weighed just 950 grams and was immediately placed in intensive care. Three days later, doctors told Fabienne that ultrasound pictures of Hugo's brain indicated that he had had a severe haemorrhage from his immature blood vessels. I just exploded into tears, she says. Both she and her husband understood that the prognosis for Hugo was grim: he had a very high risk of cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that can lead to a life of severe disability. The couple agreed that they did not want to subject their child to that. We immediately told the doctors that we did not want fierce medical intervention to keep him alive and saw the relief on the doctors' faces, recalls Fabienne, who requested that her surname not be used. That night was the most tortured of her life. The next day, however, before any … Continue reading

Fears cerebral palsy sufferers wont be able to sue under new scheme

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2015

Lawyers fear cerebral palsy sufferers will be stripped of their legal right to sue for medical negligence under a new injury insurance scheme being developed by the federal government. The Australian Lawyers Alliance fear the National Injury Insurance Scheme, if introduced, may mean children who are born with cerebral palsy due to medical malpractice may be unable to take civil action to compensate for lifetime care and support. The alliance has pointed to a major negligence case in the ACT, in which a family settled for $7.5 million, as evidence of the importance of civil action in such cases. In that case, the family had alleged that malpractice at Canberra Hospital caused their son's cerebral palsy when he was born, and settled recently after action in the ACT Supreme Court. Advertisement The alliance has warned that plans to introduce a National Injury Insurance Scheme, which is being developed alongside the National Disability Insurance Scheme, could prevent sufferers from taking similar action. But the federal government said no decision had been made on such an approach, and that full consultation on the scheme was yet to take place. "A decision regarding the implementation of a NIIS for medical treatment accidents will … Continue reading

Inspirational Leah, from Rowley Regis, suffers from spastic diplegia, which leaves her leg muscles so tight she is unable to place her feet on the ground. Dream: Katherine and Leah are trying to raise 35,000 for a spinal operation Leah hopes to have a pioneering operation to cut nerves in her spinal cord to allow her to walk, and maybe even do her first dance steps, reports the Birmingham Mail. But the selective dorsal rhizotomy procedure is not available on the NHS in the Midlands, and her family are determined to raise the vital funds themselves, so Leah can have the operation in Liverpool or Bristol. The operation would mean that she could be normal, and play catch with her friends, said Mum Katherine Davy, her full-time carer.
