A fight to survive turns to gold; Teaneck gymnast taking quest to next level of Special Olympics
Posted: Published on January 1st, 2015
December 31, 2014, 10:26 PM Last updated: Thursday, January 1, 2015, 9:43 AM At birth, Teanecks Alyssa Sims could fit snugly in her fathers hand she was about the size of his snow glove. VIOREL FLORESCU/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER Alyssa Sims, 30, of Teaneck is training for the 2015 World Special Olympics in Los Angeles. Born 2 months premature by cesarean section, she had to fight for life from the moment of delivery. Sims and her mother suffered from a prenatal condition that came close to being fatal for both of them. We were killing each other, said Renee Herriott, Sims mother. As a result, Sims lungs and central nervous system didnt function properly, requiring a 2-month stay in the hospitals neonatal intensive care unit. She developed cerebral palsy. But despite that, Herriott said, progress came quickly so much so that by the time Alyssa was a toddler, it was clear she would excel beyond the hopes of her loving and protective family. They still pinch themselves at the thought that their tiny baby, now a 30-year-old woman, is a world-class Special Olympian. As he watched his daughters wobbly balance on the uneven bars recently at Elite Gymnastics in Hawthorne, Rudolph Sims … Continue reading

Posted: Published on December 31st, 2014
An innovative treatment at BC Childrens Hospital has transformed 13-year-old Darrion Paynes life. Darrion suffers from cerebral palsy, and one of the many painful symptoms he developed, is whats known as a crouch gait. His knees were bent at 65 degrees and walking became extremely painful. Darrion Paynes knees were bent at 65 degrees Darrion still uses a wheelchair to get around, but thanks to this new therapy, hes no longer confined to the chair. Kind of surprised because I really wasnt able to move, says Darrion. BC childrens hospital is the only centre in North America using a unique surgical technique to correct crouch gait. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kishore Mulpuri says the method has fewer risks than other treatments. What we have done here is we have taken out roughly about 4-5cm segment of the bone and we fixed it with a stainless steel plate. Dr. Mulpuri has taken out roughly 4-5cm segment of the bone. Photo on right shows bone after it completely healed. The bent knee is down about 10-12 degrees. After surgery, the bent knee angle is reduced to between 10 and 12 degrees. The results have been dramatic for patients like Darrion. Of the six … Continue reading

Archie and Harley Garthwaite, from Hartlepool, were born 17 weeks early At the time, doctors said they may be the youngest twins ever to survive Archie is unable to walk and was recently diagnosed with cerebral palsy He stunned medics by learning to crawl and will now have Botox injections It is hoped these will relax his muscles and help him walk like his brother By Madlen Davies for MailOnline Published: 09:33 EST, 29 December 2014 | Updated: 12:49 EST, 29 December 2014 A twin who was one of the most premature ever to survive is set to defy doctors by taking his first steps thanks to Botox injections. Two-year-old Archie Garthwaite was diagnosed with cerebral palsy in June, after a host of complications when he and his brother Harley were born 17 weeks early. Doctors told his devastated parents Hayley Kennedy, 22, and Billy Garthwaite, 23, that he would never walk. But Archie defied medics to learn to crawl and doctors are now preparing to inject his legs with Botox, which they say could relax his tightened muscles and help him walk. Cerebral palsy is caused by a problem in the parts of the brain responsible for controlling movement. It can occur if the brain is damaged in early lifeor develops abnormally, although the exact cause is not always obvious. Parts of the brain responsible for other important functionssuch as communication, hearing, vision and the ability to learnmay also be affected. This is why people withthe conditioncan have various other problems, not just ones involving the muscles. In the past, doctors believed that cerebral palsy was caused by brain damage sustained during birththe direct result of being temporarily deprived of oxygen (asphyxiation). Asphyxiation can sometimes occur during a difficult or complicated birth. However, a major research project carried out in the 1980s showed that asphyxiation was only responsible for up to 1 in 10 cases of cerebral palsy. Most were due to problems with the brain that developed before the child was born. Researchers believe there are three main problems that can affect the brain before birth and cause cerebral palsy. These are discussed below. Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), also known as white matter damage of immaturity, refers to damage of the brain's white matter. This part of the brain comprises many nerve … Continue reading

Lewiston-Porter Middle School student gives a gift to Niagara Cerebral Palsy
Posted: Published on December 28th, 2014
LEWISTON Charles Dieteman, Charlie, to his teachers and classmates, is a sixth-grade student at Lewiston-Porter Middle School who was born with cerebral palsy, a chronic condition affecting areas of the brain that control movement and muscle coordination. But his mother, Tara McLellan, said her son is not slowed down one bit. Charles rallied his school to raise funds for World Cerebral Palsy Day on Oct. 1, collecting and then donating more than $600 to Niagara Cerebral Palsy. The nonprofit corporation offers 24-hour intermediate care, in-home respite, service coordination, independent living apartments, day treatment, clinical therapy, supported employment, and preschool and early childhood education. McLellan said Charles has a mild form of cerebral palsy, but he struggles. Less than 7 percent of people with cerebral palsy have more than one type, but he has three, she said. But cerebral palsy is not what defines the young boy, said Joy Khatib, a teacher at the Multi-Age Intermediate Education Center. He is widely known throughout the school for his contagious smile, kind personality and compassion towards others, said Khatib, who said Charlie always sees the positive side to any situation. McLellan mentioned the significance of Oct. 1 to Tina Oddy, one of Charles … Continue reading

Cerebral palsy sufferer 'told he needed responsible adult' to accompany him by restaurant staff
Posted: Published on December 23rd, 2014
A cerebral palsy sufferer claims he was discriminated against at an Indian restaurant where he was told he needed to be accompanied by a responsible adult". Cardiff comedian Ted Shiress said the treatment he endured at the Empire restaurant at Albany Road was just not acceptable. Mr Shiress, who lives in Roath, is a former finalist of the Welsh Unsigned Stand-Up Award and has played some of the leading venues on the comedy circuit, including The Glee Clubs in Cardiff and Birmingham, as well as major festivals such as Green Man in Brecon. The 27-year-old former Cardiff University student said his visit to the curry house the fourth time he had been there left him feeling hurt, reports Wales Online. At first he says he was flatly refused a table because the restaurant staff said it was full, but on another occasion was told he needed a caretaker to dine there. I had been to the restaurant three times with few issues once with my parents and the other times on my own but when the manager wasnt working. It was a Saturday night at about 9pm and I decided to chance it to see if I could get a … Continue reading

Spirit of Christmas: NHS boob-job mum Josie Cunningham raises 100 for little boy who needs surgery to walk
Posted: Published on December 23rd, 2014
NHS boob-job mum Josie Cunningham has helped raise 100 for a little boy who needs surgery to enable him to walk. The controversial model used a rather interesting technique to raise money for a little James Mills, who has Cerebral Palsy, Mild brain damage and Spastic Diplegia. Mum-of-three Josie asked some of her *favourite* celebs to help her out by donating money to James' cause. And she did so in a rather mean way. For example to Nicola McLean she wrote: @NicolaMcLean babe, you may be mutton but let's put that aside and please help this boy . To actor Jack Sheperd she said: @JackPShepherd88 you may not do much for your kid, but please help this one . Other examples include telling Katie price she is no longer a fan and saying sorry to Catherine Tyldesly for calling the cops on her. The only person shes actually nice to is Jodie Marsh who she says inspired her. In a statement on Twitter she revealed her reasoning behind her good deed. She wrote: Since having my job on NHS, Ive received countless nasty messages from people who have been refused treatment, instead of fighting for what they believe in, many … Continue reading

A SELFLESS Redditch man will give up his Christmas Day to undertake a 17-mile walk in a bid to raise vital funds for a little boy's 'life changing' operation. Roy Dalby will be lugging a cart and presents from the borough to two-year-old Ben Harris-Bell in North Littleton, Evesham, dressed as Father Christmas. The youngster is based with his mum Emma but suffers from cerebral palsy, which affects his legs and hips meaning he cannot walk or crawl yet. An operation called a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy is available in America but up to 40,000 will need to be raised to allow the youngster to undergo treatment. Without the operation Ben's life will be filled with physio and surgery to help lengthen his leg muscles and pain like cramp as his short muscles will make his legs grow out of shape. Even after the operation he will need about two years of intense physio at home with specialist equipment. Roy, who will be joined by his sister Tracey Dalby wearing an … Continue reading
